Jin Dumpling and Noodle offers a very good value and broad menu selection. They also did not add a surcharge for using a credit card with a $20 AUD minimum purchase. Many places in Melbourne's Chinatown require a $30 AUD minimum purchase to use a debit card, and charge a 3% surcharge to use a credit card. The dining room is adequate and service was good. We ordered Xiao Long Bao, braised pork noodle soup and fried noodles with pork. They offer lunch specials and both noodle dishes we ordered were from their lunch specials. The food came out quickly. The holy Grail of dumpling houses in Chinatown is the Xiao Long Bao, which are also known as "soup dumplings" because when you put one in your mouth and bite down into it, you should be greeted with a delicious burst of soup from inside the steamed dumpling, with a tasty meaty filling. Their Xiao Long Bao were just bite sized, and did satisfy with a burst of flavorful pork flavored broth and yummy filling. Our only criticism was that these were a little on the small size compared with offerings from other dumpling shops in Chinatown. However, they were easier to get from the steamer to your mouth without rupturing them and losing the broth than some of the larger dumplings found elsewhere. The fried noodles were good, but a bit oily and salty. The braised pork noodle soup had tasty pork belly chunks and noodles, but the broth lacked character. The place was filled with locals and relatively inexpensive. $23 AUD for our lunch. The service and relatively generous credit card policies earn them a 3-1/2 stars. This is a decent place for a quick bite, but the food was just adequate and filling, but not "special" enough to get to 4 stars. read more
