Our visits have always been rushed and the time to enjoy the "flavors of Hutch" have been minimal . . . although I've made it into most of the local eateries several times each over the years. So, Carl, I apologize for the neglect. We went with friends after the HHS homecoming game. Here's what I saw and liked. First, location, location, location! As a child of the 50s and 60s I enjoy old downtowns that still have life after 6 p.m. Carl's is a great repurposing of a turn-of-the-century edifice. The millwork in the bar area is impressive, for sure. I hate malls, strip malls, chain restaurants, millennial chrome, polished granite and corporate menus, ad nauseam . . . . . . along with servers who all dress alike and answer every question with "absolutely!" All of Carl's servers, uniquely attired, were knowledgeable, friendly and prompt, without being gratuitously in the way. My Maker's Manhattan was well mixed, and I won't kick that it was "shaken not stirred," since Carl's is more beer joint than cocktail lounge. Bar food is bar food. I had to chuckle at some of the other reviews. Carl's is a sports bar in Hutchinson for chrissake. I doubt they're hunting Michelin stars. The four of us were totally satisfied with the sandwiches, burgers and sides delivered to our table. In fact, my homemade potato salad was surprisingly good. Kudos for the build-your-own features on sandwiches, burgers and pizzas. Price points are fair. I eat a lot in Kansas City and cities around the country and leave way more cash on the tables of restaurants that please me far less. Carl and crew, I'm glad I found you. "Ah'll be back!"

We decided to take that 40 minute drive and pick up some of their meats this weekend. At first, I wasn't seeing anything that screaming my name -- but upon my 2nd trip around their store I noticed a variety of 'Free Samples'. So I tried their Salsa and it was pretty good. We can it at home so I didn't purchase any. They had 3 different types of Sausages on a Griddle to try. They looked intriguing, but I had just eaten! What grabbed my attention was their 'Amish Wedding' line of products. They had afew items by the Cash Register to sample. I tried one of their Sweet Gherkins. I was walking away to catch up with Hubby when the heat started to kick in!! Yum! I ran back and grabbed a jar!! We went into their Retail area and looked at their goods. Lamps, Pictures, Quilts, etc. They had some Pancake Syrups and Popcorn Oils and Toppings on that side of the store. Hubby suggested a Ham Steak for dinner -- so we returned to the Meat Cases. I ended up picking up a pkg of Baby Back Ribs for next weekend and a small pkg of Canadian Bacon . Hubby was looking through their Smoked Cheeses and selected a Smoked Cheddar and Bacon. I wished after we left that I had chosen the Smoked Horseradish Cheese, but I am on a diet that includes no Dairy or Gluten. Speaking of which, they have a very small Gluten Free section. They did have some intriguing jars of Preserves and Pie Fillings, but we didn't pick any of those up on this trip. They have a Deli Case and some freshly made Pies and Cinnamon Rolls.
