Tried applying for truck driving school, and the recruiter found out that all I had to do was renew…read moremy license. They are awesome people and will do everything they can for you.. Highly recommend!!

If you are looking into becoming a CDL driver, this is the school you want to attend!…read more I have 0 mechanical background and never really worked with my hands or done any blue collar work but I have retired from a career of 20+ years as Business Executive. I'm still a young guy, 44 and wanted to try something completely different. I did my research and found Action Career Training right in town and it is very affordable. The first week was classroom instruction. I'll shoot you straight here, there is an instructor, and he will guide the class, but it's mainly students reading chapters on their own, then videos and practice tests. Nothing exciting happens during this week... until you go down to DPS and find out that all of that reading has paid off and you walk out with your commercial learners permit!! Our class had 9 students, and then (8) we guessed someone failed a drug test... LOL and our class instructor was Don Welch. If you get Don, you are in luck! He is a great guy. The next 3 weeks involve you learning how to complete a pre-trip inspection, straight line backing, off-set backing, parallel parking and driving. Pro Tip - watch the pre-trip inspection video that they recommend - everyday for the next 3 weeks.... if you fail this... this is 100% on you... Watch videos on Double Clutching upshifting and down shifting... You will be placed with an instructor and assigned a truck. We had 4 people in our truck so, you will do a lot of sitting waiting for your turn to drive. Don't sleep, watch and learn from others mistakes. Fight for driving time. In week 3 you will go to the practice range, one of you will drive... grab the keys.. always try to be the one driving to the next place etc. Our driving instructor was Ron... I promise you... you WANT RON!! Find RON when you first arrive on week 2 at 7 AM.. tell him you want to be on his team.. mention that you are not a window licker... .. and he might accept you. In the end we learned all the DPS tests to pass the pre-trip, the skills tests and the road tests. You'll be practicing the road test on the route you'll be tested on... they break it up because they can't run the whole thing for obvious reasons, but this is like an open book test.. Action is an authorized 3rd party tester for DPS, so guess what.. ACTION does the testing! Not the instructor, but a different employee.. and you can still fail.. so don't hit a curb, stall out, speed... do dumb shit.. but, they are invested in you passing.. way more than a random DPS tester. Another great attribute for Action is that they make sure all of your testing is paid for, tell you where to go, when to go, make sure that you passed or if you need to retest etc... I wouldn't have known where to start if I did this on my own, but with Action Career Training, In a little less than a month I have my CDL A with Air Breaks, Doubles and Triples, Tanker and Hazmat endorsements and I can get a good paying job anywhere in the country any time I want. What are YOU waiting for?
