I've always wanted to redo my family room and never knew how to go about it. I didn't want to make mistakes buying the wrong furniture or using the wrong colors and regretting it later. When we got our tax return money, the first thing I wanted to do was hire an interior decorator to redo our family room. I was so excited to have found Jill Seidner and her online package seemed to be the perfect budget solution.
What I was to get:
Initial meeting to discuss what I wanted for the room design, measure, photograph, furniture floor plan layout, furnishing and accessory selection, and list of resources. For part of her online /package design services, she was to source items that I can go and purchase directly. She was to put together an entire design plan for which I can implement.
What I requested:
- Light, bright, airy, and warm design concept and colors
- New paint color, whole family room to look bright, airy, warm and light.
- Absolutely NO dark wood furniture. (At the time of consultation, Jill Seidner and I agreed the wood furniture color would be not darker than my current piano wood color which is honey oak color. She said she likes dark wood and I specifically said "no" since we had dark wood for our living room)
- Breakfast table with 4 chairs (there's only 3 of us in my family and I said I didn't need a large table since I have a 7 foot dining room table in our living room)
What I actually received:
- No photograph was taken at the time of meeting
- No new paint color selection
- Dark and heavy color concept far from bright, airy, warm and light (my current family room has lighter colors and furniture!)
- All furnishing selection dark colors with dark wood (no light wood furniture selection available on the list of resources she provided -when asked about it, she sent 15 different color wood stickers in the mail, I am to choose one) Jill Seidner specifically said the resources list will provide items I can buy directly but the furniture selection she provided did not have any other wood color options except dark wood color (one choice)
- Dining room table size of 48x84 (takes up more than one third of the family room) that looks almost exactly like the dining room table I already had in our living room. She also chose very similar dining chairs as ones in my living room (chocolate brown leather chairs).
- Same color concept as my living room (red, dark brown and beige) in which I said in our initial meeting that I wanted to totally avoid.
I reiterated several times what I wanted as far as the colors and design concept. I hired her with an understanding she will provide coordinating furniture and colors to achieve the look I wanted for my family room and she agreed to provide that service. Instead, I got design and colors opposite of what I requested(and looking just like my living room..I still don't get it) and an unusable resource list. At the end what Jill Seidner was saying is that I am to choose my own colors, choose my own wood colors out of the 15 wood color stickers she sent, go find my own furniture similar to what she chose but in the color and size I want, find my own accessories to match those furniture in the color I want. Why did I hire an interior decorator if I have to do this? I had at least 3 friends and few neighbors waiting to see the design since they were very interested in redoing one of their rooms(her online package price is reasonable). Like most people, we just want color coordinating advice and can not afford to hire a full time interior decorator. When they saw the design, their first comment was "wow, it looks dark and heavy and she used same colors as your living room??" She may not realize it but referrals are so important in her line of business! I was very disappointed with her services and would not recommend her(not that anyone who saw her design wanted her number). I know she is highly recommended on yelp (that's why I hired her) but now looking back, there are only 3 reviews dating back to 2008, nothing recent. Hmmmmmm....???? what can that mean? read more
