I basically had narrowed down the problem myself, but I wasn't confident considering my transmission was just replaced. Anyway, the mechanic came to my residence and did a full diagnostic and inspection. It ended up being exactly what I had assumed. I was given the option of purchasing the part myself or having them supply one. I chose to purchase my own. I was gone a total of 15 mins or less picking up the part and he already had the damaged starter removed and everything prepped to install the new one. He installed the new starter in 10-15 mins. The service I was most grateful for was the information that I was provided with. The mechanic was able to identify exactly what caused the problem and come to find out it was correlated to the transmission that had just been replaced. Either when it was removed or replaced the technician was negligent in the work that was done. The end cap was struck and cracked on one side. When the bendix moved forward to engage the flywheel the pressure caused the end cap to break the rest of the way through and detach from the body of the starter. The end cap ended up being ground to metal shavings by the bendix free spinning and not engaging the flywheel. Since I was able to get this information and evidence of what happened I was able to be reimbursed by the shop that replaced the transmission for the cost of the starter replacement. Overall the service was good, the work was done efficiently, the price was comparable to other mobile mechanic services in the area, and they actually were able to provide services to my zip code 63109 (which is right in the middle of St.Louis) which was a problem with every other mobile mechanic service I contacted.
