I scheduled makeup, lashes and hair. Loved my hair person (sorry bad with names) but she not only did great with my hair but she gave me great hair advice for during pregnancy and after. And those CHAIRS while they wash your hair! haha i love when my hair is washed but then i realized the chair was massaging me - heaven. make up was also great. i let her know i never wear makeup and she did great, it was just what i wanted. i got compliments all night long! Keep in mind they are very strict with their cancellation rule! i made an appt for my cousin for the same day and she was in a car accident and couldnt make it so they charged me for her appt that was not going to be used, makeup and lashes application - $80. read more

Joseph and his salon did an amazing job with a difficult case - me! *) The Monday before Thanksgiving I tried to color my roots at home, something I've been doing for a couple of months to save time and money (the irony of that after the last few days still cracks me up), with a new brand. Let's just say it dyed my roots orange. So bad that when my husband got home and saw it, he immediately offered to make me a martini, but all i could do was lay in bed and cry. I get myself up, go buy my old brand and attempt to cool down the tone by coloring it again... and pull it through to the ends for good measure. My former blonde, highlighted hair is now orange at the roots and green at the ends! A total disaster, especially since I'd be meeting my husband's family in New York for the first time at Thanksgiving. At this point, I look up who is the best colorist on Yelp, and JF3 Salon comes up. To make a long story somewhat shorter, Joseph (who was of course booked 8am-10pm the Tuesday before the holiday), had me come in early in the morning so he could look at my hair and create a game plan for Tara (the stylist who worked with me). He was like a fortune teller, "reading" my hair, you could tell he has years of experience and knows his stuff. Even though my roots were totally orange, he was able to tell "your natural color roots are dark, you have some grey hair, you left the color on for 35-40 minutes, you used level 20 developer and it was cold in your house when you did it, wasn't it?" Wow! Exactly right on every count. With their great teamwork, they saved my hair! From stripping off the old color, to a special treatment that repaired my fried keratin layer to doing a full recolor and foil highlights with products that actually rebuild the keratin even more, after an entire day at the salon they got my hair back to very close to it's original color and still feeling like hair, not steel wool (no easy feat). Part of the complication was I had extensions my old hair color used to match, which I still very much wanted to be able to wear. By the end of the project, the color and highlights also perfectly matched my extensions. The only drawbacks: The tone of my hair wasn't quite right after that first day until I went in the next day and Joseph touched it up (for free). But, considering the green/orange mess I started out with, that's understandable. Tara and Joseph did amazing work! My hair actually feels softer now than it did when I came in, very happy with the results *) The best thing is, my hair looked great at Thanksgiving. I felt beautiful and confident. I am now going to JF3 Salon for as long as I live in Newport. read more

I am one of those people who are very weary about trusting my hair to strangers. But when I was staitoned at the Navy base in Newport and had to get my hair done, I went with a personal recommendation to JF3 Salon. I could not have been happier! Tara was an amazing stylist and did a fantastic with my all-over color. She is also very personable and will make the time fly by (or just let you sleep if you want to)! The owner, Joey, was also very friendly and knowledgable. He informed me that all the hairdye is ammonia free and organic but it still provided amazing color without ruining my hair. None of the staff were pushy about products (a big pet peeve of mine) but they were clearly quality, organic products. Ashley did my eyebrows and pedicure. She was also very nice and did a great job. The ambiance is simple and elegant. The prices are expensive for Newport I'm told but about what I'd expect coming from DC. Definitely worth it! read more

Tara cut my hair tonight (this is 3rd place I've tried on the island) and I actually like it better than the guy from home who's done it for the last 6 years (and he used to cut the Dallas cowboy cheerleader's hair)! I went for a cut and color and used my Yelp coupon. I think that it is a great way to get new business- but I was treated poorly once I showed my coupon. Want business to return and be repeat business ? Then show all clients respect no matter how they pay- and yes I left a good tip too. The owner cut my hair - I asked for short and funky and I got nice and round brushed- boring!! but then most clients seemed to be in the older crowd and maybe he was a little apprehensive- He did a great color job and therefore I may go back and try again. I think that there is so much repeat business from folks that live on the island full time that getting and keeping new clients is not a priority- I may only be here for 2 years but that's no reason to be discounted as a client. Great salon! I was looking for a salon in town and after reading the reviews on Yelp, I took the plunge and booked an appointment with Joseph at JF3 Salon. It didn't just meet my expectations and hopes, it exceeded them. I typically take good care of my long hair and am aware of what type of products I use - avoiding nasty chemicals. I'm also willing to spend a little extra $ for a good salon service. JF3 provided exceptional service at a very reasonable cost. After moving from DC, I was pleasantly surprised at my bill because I would have paid almost double for that service down south. In addition, they use great products that don't smell like chemicals, or fry your hair. I was an avid user of Aveda products, but the L'Anza products are great. Joseph did a great job at coloring and cutting my hair. I wanted to keep my length, and stylists usually end up disappointing me and cutting too much - not this time! He was honest and had really good insight as to what colors would look good with my skin tone. And cut my hair just enough to keep it healthy and give it style. Over the year, I had let the color of my hair fade after training in many pools for triathlons. I left the salon with new silky, shiny, gorgeous hair. Everyone in the salon was very nice and Joseph kept me entertained during the coloring process. I'm usually staring at my watch reading old magazines - not in this salon. Was in town for a wedding and made an appointment for makeup and they did not disappoint. Was able to walk here from the bus station / visitors center which is a plus for those coming in from out of town. The staff were very welcoming and made you feel comfortable. My makeup application was $55 without tip (they also offer airbrush for a bit more but I have lash extensions so that wasn't an option for me) which I found to be reasonable. Ashley was great -- she began by asking me how much coverage I wanted from the foundation; since my skin is pretty red I asked for heavy -- and she was able to cover up the redness without the makeup looking caked on. Since I'm not someone who wears makeup often we went for a more "natural" look which I really liked. She was also very easy to talk to which made the time fly by! Wow, what a great place! My bridesmaids and I had our wedding day hair and make-up done here. The salon was very accommodating. It had a nice relaxed atmosphere and the staff is super talented. Our hairdresser worked wonders on short, long, and thick hair doing updos and styling. The make-up artist listened to what we wanted and we didn't look like we were wearing a ton of make-up. I went in this past Saturday to get an up-do for a wedding. I arrived 15 mins early for a 3:15pm as I was on a tight schedule and was hoping that they were running ahead schedule. Sadly, they were not ahead or on schedule but they were behind by about 15-20 mins. Not cool when you're going in to get your hair done for an event....an event that will start without you. My stylist was sweet and said she thought she could get me out by 4:15pm so that was reassuring. However, I told her I wanted a "low loose bun." She moved quickly but when she finished and showed me the back, there was no bun. She just curled and pinned it. I *hate* that look as I think it looks very 18 year old prom. Since I needed to leave, I didn't even protest but was just really disappointed. She was sweet, but come on...don't ask me for what I want if you're going to just do something else. read more

I found JF3 through Yelp in the first place. It was a little out of my way considering I live in Tiverton but decided it was too good to pass up. When I arrived, I was openly welcomed by all of the employees. My stylist was Courtney and she was amazing. Very personable. After researching and finding JF3 had the best reviews in town, I decided to give it a shot. Courtney was my stylist and I told her what look I was trying to achieve. If I could give it a lower star then I would. My stylist is amazing and I looovvveee her but she was on vacation and I needed to get my roots done. I'm a dark brunette and I color my hair to a level 8. I'm working to get to a level 9. I used Yelp to find a hair salon and called this salon. They were able to squeeze me in and I was so relieved since my roots were really grown out. I told them the wrong thing on the phone when hey we're booking my appointment (I wanted to get my roots done). Apparently that means something else to them. However when I explained what I wanted to the stylist (oh btw) said she worked for 4 months at one salon a a few months at this salon. The receptionist never mentioned she was letting an apprentice do my roots. This was a high end salon charging reasonable prices so didn't think to ask. It was first time going and I usually get the canned response when I do ask "all our stylists are amazing." Anyway, I asked her to match my roots to my hair color. They seems ok with the request. She mixed up the color with the help of a more seasoned stylist. I was concerned that the color was too dark in the missing bowl. Then she painted it on and it looked like the color of my natural color. I mentioned this several times and she kept aging it wouldn't match the "auburn shade of my highlights." As soon as she left to let me sit, I went to the older statist and mentioned my concerns that this looks really dark. Finally, I asked them to show me what the color. She brought out the hair sample and showed me. It was the same color as my natural color which was the color of my roots and they slapped it every where. I paid $250 dollars to get my hair lifted to a level 7-8 a couple months ago and they ruined it by going over my highlights with dark brown. I asked them to wash it out immediately and refused to pay (they should have paid me for ruining my hair). I met with my stylist and she said that we have to start all over again to get my hair to the ideal color than we can go to a maintainable plan. Which will be about $200 more than what it would have cost if they hadn't painted my roots dark brown!! Also, I work a lot and I took a precious vacation day to get this done. They said they wouldn't of had time to lift the color of my roots. That's fine but they should have said that earlier so I could have gone somewhere else. The owner washed my hair out and defended the stylists decision. He said it was my fault that they gave me what I asked. I asked him why he lets someone with less than a year experience work on complex appointments? He said that she's under his supervision. So I asked him why he wasn't supervising her. He never came down once until after I asked to wash it out. He didn't have a response to that. Once I saw the damage I left the salon without even brushing my hair...I didn't trust what I would say and didn't want to make a bigger scene than I already did. The person I blame the most (besides me for trusting these stupid Yelp reviews) is the senior stylist who told my girl what color to apply on my hair. She refused to listen to what I was asking for. She should have said that it want possible, they didn't have time to lift the color, anything but what she did. I take most of the blame. I should never have asked them to do it. It requires a color expert and most stylist just don't listen enough especially for a walk in. I'm attaching the pic I sent to my stylist - this was same day. read more

I read the reviews on Yelp about the Newport Salons and I made an appointment on 30 MAY 14 for an updo at JF3 Salon. (My son was getting married that day.) The owner, Joseph did my updo and Ashley did my make-up. They both worked a miracle, as I looked 10 years younger! I received so many compliments at the wedding and even my husband of 30 years noticed how good I looked! I returned a week after the wedding for a haircut. It was a 200 mile commute, round trip from Massachusetts, but I had 100% confidence that Joseph knew how to cut hair and style hair - and he did not disappoint. It was well worth the drive. I am currently living in San Diego, but I will only go to have my hair cut and styled at JF3 Salon whenever I am back East. Joseph did an amazing job cutting my hair. Joseph was able to cut my hair so that it still remained long, but the weight of it was gone. The weight of long hair can make hair look so flat. Now I have long hair with volume and without layers.
