My friend would always tell us about the sales and discounts, so we knew we'd get a good deal. Although it's not traditional, I picked out my own ring. My boyfriend (at the time) was nervous to pick out something I wouldn't like, so we made the decision to go together. I originally went into Kay wanting a princess cut ring but after my friend kept saying "oh, so and so has this one" on every ring I liked, I knew I needed to change my search. I didn't want something that everyone else already had. I ended up falling in love with a 3-stone cathedral setting ring with diamonds around the side. The ring was close to $8,000 but it was on clearance for $5000. We'd already had the plan to put the ring on layaway, so my friend let us know that if we picked it up on a day that had additional 30-40% off the clearance items, we could get out of there for even less. We finally picked my ring up the day after Thanksgiving and I absolutely love my ring! Their layaway is great and they would have held it for us with a couple hundred down, although we put down more so we could get it faster. The only reason for me not giving a higher star rating is that every time I went in (including the initial time) to make a payment, they hassled me to open a credit card. I already know myself and had I financed a ring, I would have made minimum payments on it forever and probably dropped $10k on it by the time the interest was said and done. Kay is a great place to buy jewelry as they do frequently have good sales, but stick to your guns about the credit cards. Plus, if you finance a sale ring, you really aren't getting a sale anyway with the interest. (And don't listen to the BS line they'll feed you "oh you can pay it off in a few months and not pay any interest." Unless you're THAT good with your credit cards, don't do it!) Kay employees do have a goal of how many they need to open per day, so they will tell you every line they think you need to hear to meet this goal. Here's how slimy they are. My brother told them he didn't have a job and that he's been unemployed for over a year and they still opened a card for him- no freaking joke. They really don't give a sh*t about whether you go into debt, as long as they meet their quota.
