    Boneless Wings

Every time I'm in the Des Moines area I have to come to a Jethros. Hands down my favorite thing to get is their boneless wings, they are like thin saucy chicken strips and they always hit the spot. My personal favorite sauces are the garlic Parmesan and the chili teriyaki but I often have to try the sauce of the month as well and I appreciate the constantly new sauce of the month flavors they come up with. The ambiance is always that classic jethros BBQ vibe, casual and comfortable and the staff has always been great. I still believe they have one of the best if not the best in house ranch as well and have to stock up on that and some of their BBQ sauces when I'm here (my favorite is the hot BBQ).

They charged a 3.5% inflation fee that was not disclosed until I got the bill. Not going back, despite the good happy hour specials. Hint: You could have increased the prices of drinks 50 cents each. No one would have complained and people would have thought they're still getting a great deal. Chose to be cute instead, which is your choice but I will not be returning.

Hits the spot every time! This is a must while in Iowa. For me, Jethro's is always: CONSISTENT: I know that the one-meat platter will hit the spot every time - and taste the same at every Jethro's location. TASTY: My go-to is brisket with waffle fries and jalapeño creamed corn plus a cornbread muffin - so good! QUICK: Service has always been attentive for me, and especially this weekend we visited the Ankeny location. Speedy without lacking service! SAUCY: I love all the different sauces they make and provide on the tables. Georgia mustard and Alabama white are my favs! We buy bottles of those, hot BBQ and their Ranch to take home to MN we like it that much ($5 each). SPACIOUS: This location, like the others, have plenty of space. That means typically not having to wait, and that you can bring a larger group here. An Iowa favorite and classic!

    Southwest salad with chicken

We stopped for lunch-- our 17th 'cue stop in Iowa, and the 385th in a BBQ journey spanning 35 states. $52.63 plus tip bought a mountain of some of the country's best onion rings for an appetizer. A southwest salad was excellent-- the chicken nicely smoked, and all of the ingredients fresh. The stockyard sandwich is a very good combination of brisket and burnt ends, the brisket sliced and the burnt end cubes well caramelized. Good smoke, moist, tender and flavorful describe both meats. The creamy rigatoni style mac 'n cheese (the side) is rich and full of flavor. A large order of boneless chicken wings went home with us for dinner later that day ... heavenly when dipped in Alabama white. So, yet another good stop for 'cue in the Des Moines area.

Great food. Service was pretty slow. I like the atmosphere of the place. I had the pulled pork with coleslaw. It was delicious. My husband had the wings. They were very good. You get A LOT of wings! Thursday has half price wings which is a great deal!

BBQ might be an overstatement as this is a bar-first type food with BBQ as a secondary imo

So tasty and juicy. I should have bought two orders because my friend wanted to eat all of it. Brisket burnt ends were amazing! The bark was so yummy. Brisket was moist and Smokey. Perfect size, too. Pulled pork was also juicy and Smokey. Pork at other places can dry out quickly, but not at Smokey D's. It was filled with flavor and I couldn't stop eating it (until I had eaten all of it). Baked beans were very tasty and good. Coleslaw was just the right creamy sweetness to keep the palette clean. Not pictured was the two orders of garlic toast I ordered after eating the piece that came with the plate. Overall a sweet 10/10 from me, or as a BBQ judge, I give it all straight 9's.

The look and feel of the restaurant reminded me of Phil's bbq from San Diego. We tried the baked potato with brisket as well as the brisket platter with baked beans and jalapeño corn. The jalapeño corn was like creamed corn texture. It was good and spicy. The brisket was a bit dry for my liking but I think this is more of a sauce your meat place. I usually prefer dry rub tx style brisket but none the less I thought the brisket was still good. Portions were good and service was great.

The monthly flavored shakes are also a nice treat. And where can one get some of the best Brussels sprouts at a chicken place? They are delish! You can get your sandwiches grilled, fried, in a wrap or in a salad. For me, all great options but the original fried is my go to- large, always perfectly cooked and juicy chicken. The service is as fantastic as the food- always friendly. And- dogs allowed! Outdoor patio seating in addition to indoor and (let me repeat what exceptional service) they find you even when you change your mind and start one place and end in the other. Drive through is a nice option and the only (good) problem for this business that started out as a food truck is that at peak times parking and pulling out can be tricky with the drive through. Hawker Kitchen brings authentic Malaysian street food flavors right into the heart of Des Moines,…read moreand it's a spot that feels both comforting and exciting if you're craving Southeast Asian dishes. Char Kueh Teow This dish stood out immediately which has a smoky wok hei flavor (the "breath of the wok") coated the flat rice noodles, giving them that deep caramelized edge that's hard to find outside of Malaysia. The prawns were plump and juicy, and the mix of soy, garlic, and chili gave just the right balance of savory and spicy. Fresh cucumbers and pickled vegetables on the side added a refreshing crunch, making each bite balanced and addictive. Laksa Rich, creamy, and fragrant, the laksa broth was a highlight. The curry coconut base carried layers of spice without being overwhelming, and every sip warmed you from the inside out. The noodles were cooked just right, with toppings that tied it together from seafood to herbs. It's the kind of bowl that makes you pause between spoonfuls just to savor the aroma. Satay The chicken satay had a lovely turmeric and lemongrass marinade, grilled to a slight char that locked in the smoky flavor. Tender on the inside with crispy edges, it paired perfectly with the bold, nutty, and slightly spicy peanut dipping sauce. The cucumber slices on the side helped cut through the richness, just like you'd get back at a hawker stall in Malaysia. Overall Hawker Kitchen is a gem for anyone looking for authentic Malaysian comfort food in Des Moines. Portions are generous, flavors are bold and true to their roots, and the variety on the menu makes it worth repeat visits. If you're new to Malaysian cuisine, start with the satay and char kueh teow; if you're a fan already, the laksa will feel like home.
