    Boneless Wings

Every time I'm in the Des Moines area I have to come to a Jethros. Hands down my favorite thing to get is their boneless wings, they are like thin saucy chicken strips and they always hit the spot. My personal favorite sauces are the garlic Parmesan and the chili teriyaki but I often have to try the sauce of the month as well and I appreciate the constantly new sauce of the month flavors they come up with. The ambiance is always that classic jethros BBQ vibe, casual and comfortable and the staff has always been great. I still believe they have one of the best if not the best in house ranch as well and have to stock up on that and some of their BBQ sauces when I'm here (my favorite is the hot BBQ).

They charged a 3.5% inflation fee that was not disclosed until I got the bill. Not going back, despite the good happy hour specials. Hint: You could have increased the prices of drinks 50 cents each. No one would have complained and people would have thought they're still getting a great deal. Chose to be cute instead, which is your choice but I will not be returning.

Hits the spot every time! This is a must while in Iowa. For me, Jethro's is always: CONSISTENT: I know that the one-meat platter will hit the spot every time - and taste the same at every Jethro's location. TASTY: My go-to is brisket with waffle fries and jalapeño creamed corn plus a cornbread muffin - so good! QUICK: Service has always been attentive for me, and especially this weekend we visited the Ankeny location. Speedy without lacking service! SAUCY: I love all the different sauces they make and provide on the tables. Georgia mustard and Alabama white are my favs! We buy bottles of those, hot BBQ and their Ranch to take home to MN we like it that much ($5 each). SPACIOUS: This location, like the others, have plenty of space. That means typically not having to wait, and that you can bring a larger group here. An Iowa favorite and classic!

    Southwest salad with chicken

We stopped for lunch-- our 17th 'cue stop in Iowa, and the 385th in a BBQ journey spanning 35 states. $52.63 plus tip bought a mountain of some of the country's best onion rings for an appetizer. A southwest salad was excellent-- the chicken nicely smoked, and all of the ingredients fresh. The stockyard sandwich is a very good combination of brisket and burnt ends, the brisket sliced and the burnt end cubes well caramelized. Good smoke, moist, tender and flavorful describe both meats. The creamy rigatoni style mac 'n cheese (the side) is rich and full of flavor. A large order of boneless chicken wings went home with us for dinner later that day ... heavenly when dipped in Alabama white. So, yet another good stop for 'cue in the Des Moines area.

So tasty and juicy. I should have bought two orders because my friend wanted to eat all of it. Brisket burnt ends were amazing! The bark was so yummy. Brisket was moist and Smokey. Perfect size, too. Pulled pork was also juicy and Smokey. Pork at other places can dry out quickly, but not at Smokey D's. It was filled with flavor and I couldn't stop eating it (until I had eaten all of it). Baked beans were very tasty and good. Coleslaw was just the right creamy sweetness to keep the palette clean. Not pictured was the two orders of garlic toast I ordered after eating the piece that came with the plate. Overall a sweet 10/10 from me, or as a BBQ judge, I give it all straight 9's.

Came out here again for a Saturday early dinner as a family of 10 and it was packed! Service is ok. Shop is small, seats 30 maybe at tables. Then there are 10 bar seating. Not a cozy place, really a place without frills. That's fine. We came for the food only. Highly recommend a visit and will be back when we crave them ribs.

They had a truck not show and there was no Wednesday special tonight. A full rack of St Louis style ribs and two sides for $20. At this point I think we all understand distribution chain issues... So it is what it is. Might want to call ahead, just in case, if you are looking to take advantage of that killer deal...! Having opened in June of this year they've been around a few months now. Bubbies sits right alongside Filet and the parking lot is very good sized. It's seat yourself with a selection of low top tables and chairs along with a small bar and bar stools. The interior of the restaurant is well lit and open. The decor outside of the one wall mural is pretty plain. Ordering is done at the table and that's where your bill is presented at the end of your meal. Let's put this right up front too... The young gentleman who served me tonight did a helluva good job! I went with the Rib and Meat Platter. Four bones of baby back ribs and I paid the $5 upgrade for for the burnt ends. Sides of BBQ beans, mac and cheese, and a corn muffin. And a fountain drink (Coke products)... $31 and change before tip. This special not being on tonight's menu was the only negative. The corn muffin was small, but moist. Not the dry excuse some restaurants try to pass off as cornbread. I could have eaten a few more of these... The mac and cheese was made with a cavatappi type of pasta and a pleasant cheese blend. Creamy...not chalky. Very good. The BBQ beans were traditional and had large visible chunks of meat throughout. They didn't exactly blow my socks off...but still one of the better examples of baked beans I've had recently. The burnt ends were very good. There were a couple of pieces that were a little salty for my taste, but it wasn't all of them. Honestly I think that can be kind of normal with most seasoning and rubs. It's not always as uniform as it could be and will vary from batch to batch. I'd order their burnt ends again in a heartbeat. St Louis and baby back ribs are both pork. St Louis are smaller, thinner, and cut lower closer to the belly. Baby back are thicker, from the upper rib cage area, and cut closer to the spine. The baby back ribs were easily the star of the show! So tender. The smoke and the seasoning were on point. The meat pulled clean off the bone! They were perfect! One other thing I should mention... My food hit the table within a few minutes of me placing my order. FAST! Now I LOVE Whatcha Smokin', but I've always wondered why it takes 30 min from when I order to the food hitting the table. My guess is most of the food was taken off the smoker long before I got to the restaurant. It's sitting in a warmer and maybe needs sliced and plated. I could be wrong... If I was ordering bar drinks I could see holding me at the table for as long as possible cause we all know drinks often drive profit, but my Coke comes with free refills. Lol They're not on the menu, but ask about desserts. Tonight they were offering a mason jar cheesecake and some kind of a mousse cake. Bubbies really nailed it on service expectations. I had a great first visit with them. My server was fantastic. The food was hot, good quality, and I was in and out. Can't wait to go back and try their brisket! https://www.facebook.com/profile.php/?id=61557154408668

There was a small but steady crowd throughout the night and we had top- notch service from our server- knowledgeable about the menu, attentive in the 'just right way' - carefully observing drinks and not interrupting date night more than necessary. A variety of local And other craft beers were featured although surprisingly not any from Firetrucker next door! The holiday decor was still up but even without it has a warm feel- love the various table sizes and heights and the long bar with a pretty decent offering for cocktails. While there, the bartender was experimenting with drinks and having fun. After recommendations I ordered the French dip which was phenomenal! Homemade bread, warm, generous meat and peppers and grilled onions, flavorful dip . I will say if I ordered again I would ask to have the sauce left off as I am not a fan of horseradish sauce. Still, it was tasty! Side salad as option was super fresh with mixed greens and the house creamy Italian was bursting with herby flavor. my husband had the tenderloin and while delicious- it was 'bougie' and not the traditional Midwest. Char Kueh Teow This dish stood out immediately which has a smoky wok hei flavor (the "breath of the wok") coated the flat rice noodles, giving them that deep caramelized edge that's hard to find outside of Malaysia. The prawns were plump and juicy, and the mix of soy, garlic, and chili gave just the right balance of savory and spicy. Fresh cucumbers and pickled vegetables on the side added a refreshing crunch, making each bite balanced and addictive. Laksa Rich, creamy, and fragrant, the laksa broth was a highlight. The curry coconut base carried layers of spice without being overwhelming, and every sip warmed you from the inside out. The noodles were cooked just right, with toppings that tied it together from seafood to herbs. It's the kind of bowl that makes you pause between spoonfuls just to savor the aroma. Satay The chicken satay had a lovely turmeric and lemongrass marinade, grilled to a slight char that locked in the smoky flavor. Tender on the inside with crispy edges, it paired perfectly with the bold, nutty, and slightly spicy peanut dipping sauce. The cucumber slices on the side helped cut through the richness, just like you'd get back at a hawker stall in Malaysia. Overall Hawker Kitchen is a gem for anyone looking for authentic Malaysian comfort food in Des Moines. Portions are generous, flavors are bold and true to their roots, and the variety on the menu makes it worth repeat visits. If you're new to Malaysian cuisine, start with the satay and char kueh teow; if you're a fan already, the laksa will feel like home.
