Disappointing. We were seated in an enclosed patio which was nice but the tables were awful. They were wobbly and had a metal post running underneath that our knees was pressed against the whole time. I ordered a salad with steak on it. The steak didn't have an ounce of seasoning on it, not even salt. It was also tough even though I ordered medium. The fries on the salad were excellent, I will say. That was the only saving grace. My boyfriend ordered a buffalo chicken sandwich. It was large but the flavor of the sauce was terrible and he couldn't eat it. He did like his fries. He mentioned the bad flavor to the server and they did take $5 off the bill which we didn't expect but it was appreciated. Overall, disappointing and this is probably my last trip here. Jethro's is definitely a local "landmark" in town, so when traveling to Altoona we had to stop in to check it out! The restaurant definitely looks like it has been there since the beginning of time, with all tables, chairs, and flooring being very "loved"over the many years, so it could definitely use a glow up. Our server was very friendly, tentative, and informative. The menu definitely has an eclectic vibe, from ribs, to Italian, to finger/bar food, there is something for everyone. However, we found the food to be very greasy, and underwhelming. The fried zucchini and cheese, while the portion was huge it was just ok. I think it might be a bit difficult to have the cheese temp and zucchini peels served at the same hot temperature, as our fried cheese arrived sort of warm, and the zucchini peels hot and ready to enjoy. The app is served with ranch, marinara, and cocktail sauce which was a bit shocking to the tastebuds because it was very unexpected. I ordered the chicken cheesesteak, which the largest part of the sandwich was the bread, next was the cheese, the peppers and chicken come in third. The chicken wasn't great, but overall edible. Huge portion of fries do adorn the plate though! My husband ordered the plain chicken breasts, sweet potato and veggies, decent meal but nothing to write home about. Stopped here for Saturday night dinner - with plenty of options in the altoona area we decided to settle here and give it a shot. Looking for Italian food - a place that boasts its ribs probably wasn't the best but you have to try places. It was very busy on a Saturday night - and the wait time for us was right around 25min so we stood by the dessert case and people watched. Decor is western - lots of wood - obviously by the name - and overall it looked clean. Seemed to be kept up nicely. Ordered Buffalo chicken dip and a couple drinks to start - and though the dip took awhile - it came out lukewarm. We added chips with the order. The chips were good but rubbery. I was in the mood for Italian - so I was eyeing that part of the menu. I point blank asked the waiter if I should order chicken parmesan from here and he told me yes and he highly recommends it. The spaghetti it came with was way over cooked, and the chicken itself was nice. But the sauce was very very ketchup like. For dessert I ordered the coconut cream pie - which wasn't bad. The steak was great quality and cooked perfectly. The asparagus was young and nicely seasoned. My wife had crab cakes. I tried a bite... Loaded with crab not bread crumbs. Ed the waiter brought me a mini flight to try different beers. Really a charming guy. Eh! Let me just say both experiences haven't been The greatest. Normally I will give a restaurant two tries, after that on to other restaurants I haven't tried. Fortunately I'm sorry Jethros it's wasn't great considering the price. Looks were very deceiving, My dinner was cold. Like shockingly cold. I only could eat a few pieces. I wasn't sure if that was how it was supposed to be or not but it didn't do any justice. The asparagus was yummy though. The view and the cups are awesome! Oh oh! Decided to try Jethro's for a quick shift meal At first when I was told my total was $9.78 I was unbothered and expecting it to be at least substantial. Best thing at Jethro's is there dinner rolls. Known for their ribs, I wouldn't recommend them at all. Not slow cooked enough and thrown on the grille and still couldn't even get them off the bone. The bbq sauce is very vinegary. The sirloin steak was very thin and not good either. I asked for a glass of ice and was told they were low on ice. Whatever. We had a party of 20+ people and overall I was not impressed with the food or the service. I would not go back. Just my opinion! This restaurant has really big windows, so we asked for a table with a window. We had a beautiful view of the roof of the neighboring Target store next door. If you can bring yourself to look beyond the roof, which is huge, there is a beautiful golf course. The restaurant needs some tlc, but the food was surprisingly good. read more

I'm not sure I ever ate here when I lived in Altoona although I probably should have. It's clear Jethro's has staying power that will withstand my opinion. The food and service is solid, although the decor could stand to have a bit of a redo. It also has a nice patio and a great view of a golf course. What could use the most work, IMHO, is the menu. Nothing beyond salad in terms of meatless options. I was in a "what the (*#&" mood so went for fish and chips, which it turns out is only available at lunchtime. This is a strong 3* rating, because Jethro's was a welcome respite from the menacing chain restaurants that have cropped up all over Altoona. The place is tucked away, up a hill sandwiched between a Wal-Mart and another phantasmagorical shopping complex. I think this is considered to be a "nice" place for the area, but it is a family style restaurant where jeans and sneakers would be perfectly appropriate. There is no pretense to the decor. Rustic country. Water, iced tea and draft beers are all served in Ball mason jars. Early in the evening the bar was busy, but the restaurant was pretty empty. After ordering, we realized it was happy hour, with $1 drafts and half priced appetizers. But the bar was a bit smokey, and it was nice to be seated at a table. Jethro's calls itself a place for ribs. And they also have a wide selection of Italian food. So, that's what we got. I had the 1/2 rack of ribs with a side caesar. The missus had the house-made potato/ricotta gnocchi with tomato sauce. We saw something on the appetizer menu we had never seen before. Pepperoni stuffed bread. The waitress vouched for it, so we conceded and got a small order. Holy cow. Likely it was enough calories for a whole meal in itself. And while it was good, it was not quite as good as it could have/should have been. The bread itself was a bit overly chewy. But it's hard to go wrong with cheese, sauce and pepperoni. So the ribs were meltingly tender, if not terribly smokey. The sauce glaze was a nice combination of sweet and spicy, although a bit more sweet then is generally my taste. Overall, a nice enjoyable fatty treat. A 1/2 rack isn't a lot of food, but it is very rich and filling. The only real disappointment was the side caesar which was so heavily dressed, most of the salad was more dressing than greens. And this is coming from a man who likes a heavy hand with dressing. The gnocchi were fine. Nothing to write home about. But props for making it there, and using ricotta in the dumplings. The portion was overly generous, as I think we made another couple of meals out of the leftovers. Our bill was ridiculously cheap, and we had a great time. Far better I think than if we went to the Cracker Barrel (which would have been choice number two - since the wife oddly had NO interest in going to Hooters). read more

We had dinner here our final evening in Altoona. When we arrived there was a loud and spirited Karaoke event going on in the bar with lots of laughing and dancing. We sat in the dining area. I ordered a Caesar salad, plus a couple of appetizers: an order of riblets and a half dozen boneless chicken wings - with Blue cheese and celery. I also asked for a side of the same hot sauce that was used to coat the boneless wings. The Caesar salad was fresh and crispy, but rather ordinary in flavor. The riblets were very tasty! I enjoyed them a lot! The boneless wings were good, but nothing to make you say wow! Service was good. If I was in the area, I'd come back here again to try a steak or hang in the bar for a drink. read more

This place has some of the best grub in town! This place can certainly accommodate a large number of diners. I especially love the outdoor seating too! Their menu is pretty large, but rest assured almost everything on the menu is delish! Definitely check out their specials! Those are such great deals! Tons of food for a great price! For those who are looking for something different, give their huge salads a try! You can't go wrong with one of those! (That's what I ordered!) Also, their French fries are fresh cut and delish! Couldn't even stay to eat as this place is filthy. We were seated and given a high chair that was sticky and covered in bird poop. I tried my best to wipe it with a baby wipe and hand sanitizer and then grabbed some nearby paper towels. The more I wiped the more black I wiped off. Waitress agreed they were overdone and cheerfully offered to get another portion. 2nd attempt came out absolutely WELL DONE. We are talking beef jerky here. One of my favorite places for gnocchi!! My husband likes the steak salad and although I'm not into ribs, that's what this place is known for and people get excited for them. They have awesome dinner rolls and homemade desserts. In the colder weather they offer a very nice fireplace and in the warmer weather they have a huge patio to sit on while dining and having a few drinks from their great bar. Our waitress spilled water all over the table and didn't bother to even attempt to clean it up of give us napkins to clean it up. The parking lot was really crowded when we rolled in at 5:15 on a Saturday night. We were promptly seated and clearly, the place was buzzing with diners. ​ The menu offers daily specials, but not on Saturday. My dining partner and I settled on the BBQ chicken breast with Asparagus and Sweet Potato. The chicken was tender, juicy and flavored through with the BBQ sauce. Not just a quick squirt​ from a grocery store bottle. The asparagus was cooked perfectly with crunch and the baked sweet potato was huge with ample butter offered and brown sugar to make it even tastier​ if you wanted. The rolls were piping hot, just from the oven. We passed on dessert but there is a case full of tempting slices of pies and cakes. Good food and good service and reasonable prices. So why only three stars. The place has a bit of a run down vibe. Maybe that is what they are going for in decor with big old looking a/c pipes on the ceiling.
