This review is for food served to over 200 people:…read more I've been to lots of events and awards. I've even organised and hosted a good few, but the Mercure just seemed overwhelmed, maybe even surprised we were all there. The actual event and presentations, from the people hiring the ballroom, were great. But sadly the hotels bits seemed to let it down so badly. At the 6.30pm arrival time the bar was 4 deep with people waiting to be served. The solution from the hotel was to take people off the bar and move them into other jobs, then after lots of people were waiting they just announced that as it was nearly 7pm the bar was closing as we needed to be sat for dinner, and that staff inside were waiting to take drinks orders. Which left people without drinks. The staff inside were the ones that had been removed from the bar. Which meant they then had to run back and fish with drinks despite us all being at the bar minutes before. We were then told that the hotel didn't do pints of cider, only bottles, despite me having just been stood at the for 25 mins watching people buy pints of cider. She days she'd double check but came back with a bottle at £5. An hour later I wandered back to the bar myself and bought a pint of cider for £4.60. Crazy!! The meal was pork which was a great size but very over cooked. It was also listed on the menu as being stuffed with cheese and chutney, but no one on our table found any evidence of that. The potatoes were nice and rosemary flavoured however. The desert was a cheesecake which had a pastry base served with a mash of peach icecream and raspberry sorbet. The latter was very weird and didn't work at all for me as it was like icecream that had been melted and refrozen resulting in chucks of ice in it. Finally, the hotel conveniently, half way through the evening, sold out of all its red wine apart from the £40 bottles of Rioja meaning people had no option but to upgrade. For a major hotel that's either a blatant con or very bad management! We've asked if next year's awards can be at any other hotel in the North West!

The fact that a taxi is always available from Arrow is one of the only positive aspects of the business - they are renowned for overcharging, especially for shorter differences such as Headingley to Leeds city centre, and the drivers are mostly unfriendly. On more than one occasion, we have contacted them in advance, asking for a six-seater people carrier to be told that one is on its way. Yet lo and behold, two four-seaters turn up in place of one six-seater, meaning the company makes more money and the customer spends more. I would recommend Premier or Amber over Arrow, but with the state of the taxi industry in Leeds (there are barely any black council cabs unlike London or Liverpool) there is little to choose between all the private hire taxi firms; you just have to bite your tongue and pay the extortionate prices. Or walk.
