EasyJet is a misnomer because my experience traveling with them was not easy. I came from a transatlantic flight arriving at Terminal 2 and had thought that I could take the bus to Terminal 1 (to Hamburg) and transfer. While waiting in the queue to transfer, the guy at security informed me that EasyJet and all the other discount carriers do not participate in the transfer process. In turn, I was directed to go back to Terminal 2 and go through passport control and head to Terminal 1 to board my flight. This non-participation in the airport transfer process was not known to me as it was not advertised when I bought my EasyJet ticket.
I only had a 2 hour gap to go back to Terminal 2, go through Passport control, walk to Terminal 1, and go through security. Unfortunately for me, by the time I made it back to Terminal 2, there was a long queue of about 100 non-EU/UK passport holders- and at that time I only had about 1.5 hours left. I waited about half an hour and realized I would miss my flight if I were going to continue wait. Instead, I flagged down a gal who worked in airport security and asked if she could help get me through Passport Control since I was cutting it close to my flight. She graciously assisted, got me through Passport Control within a matter of minutes, and saved me from missing my flight!
Now... onto the boarding process of EasyJet. Yet again, not easy. Why? There seems to not be any coordinated boarding process-- no boarding by zones, no boarding by priority, etc. It's just one long, haphazard, disorganized queue. We lined up in this disorganized line, and later we found out that the flight was delayed. So all us passengers continued to stand up and line up right outside the airplane boarding area, again in a disorderly fashion. Definitely not the most enjoyable boarding experience.
Inflight experience-nothing really to write home about. Planes were old and weathered, with very below average leg room. I sat in the middle, which was only bearable because the flight to Hamburg from Manchester was short. If it were any longer, I probably would have had a bigger problem.
There are some good aspects of EasyJet including being able to check in days before departure, ability to use mobile boarding pass, and not having a weight limit on carry on baggage (which most discount carriers have). So, yes there are definite good things about EasyJet that are commendable, but sadly the whole airport experience from not being able to transfer (rather, not knowing it was not possible to do so), and the inefficient and disorganized queue process made my EasyJet experience a subpar one.
I'd rate EasyJet a 2.5 stars out of 5, rounded down to 3. I usually like discount flight carriers because they provide good value for travel and are usually easy to work with. But sadly, EasyJet was not "easy" for me. It was rather more of a DifficultJet. read more
