No big deal, just a mistake, didn't complain just asked if this was correct and they fixed it. Order was later than expected, had to call to check up. Alterations done were good, but wife was present to try on the ring and it needed resizing. Asked for this to be done, expecting to pay, was told that first resize after other work is done is free. Got a receipt that shows this. The owner personally said this. I verified again with another member of staff as I was paying the remaining balance on previous work. Yes, first resize is free, I'm told. All conversations polite and happy at this point, on both sides. Almost a week later, when the ring is due to be returned the next day, I get a voicemail explaining that the resizing is not free, but rather $75. Also, they were going to be late finishing it. I politely explained that I was told, and had a receipt showing, they said this alteration was free, and that getting a price switch and a delay after they held onto my ring for a week is a bad look. They were firm on the price having always been $75. I suggested that I'm willing to pay that, but unhappy, and would be looking elsewhere in future. All polite but firm on both sides at this point. This apparently set them off - as I was told I would have to wait on a call back from the owner. The owner called me back a few minutes later, and was immediately hostile. "Why don't you just come in and get it resized somewhere else. Why would anyone think this was free? Do you work for free?" When I tried to respond to clarify that I wouldn't have expected it if I wasn't explicitly told so, I was loudly talked over and condescended to further. Naturally I stopped being polite at that point. I went in to collect my property, and asked to speak to the owner after the ring was returned, and he was equally rude and condescending throughout about the idea that I'd believe someone who said it was free. I'm still holding the receipt that says the work is paid for at this point. This is the same owner who had, a week ago, cheerfully told me this was free because they'd just finished work on the ring. I'll admit I wasn't polite at this point either, because I do not appreciate being lied to or scammed and then gaslit about it, and this wasn't a worker who had no blame, but the owner himself. If it had been merely the mistake, I would have been disappointed at the unreliability and would have sought future work elsewhere. If it had been an adjustment in price based on unexpected extra work, that would have been fine. But this store will make errors that cost you money, and then mock and gaslight you for asking them to correct the error. Oh, and I was loudly informed in the middle of the store with other customers present that "In the 20 years the store has been in business, they have never had a single problem before". It was at that point I suspected the owner might not be entirely honest. I have attached a receipt with personal information redacted which shows the work order and that all costs were fully paid. This is the receipt I was handed when I made the request for the resizing, and I was shown the place on the receipt where it shows it was fully paid as the receptionist admitted the receipts are a little hard to read. Given the dishonesty so far, I am looking forward to the story the owner offers in the reply below. I expect he will not be as honest about his own flaws, as I have been above. Highlighted on the receipt are the total prices for the previous work done, the amount paid at the checkout when the resizing was accepted, and the remaining balance on the work to be done.
