I first heard "Sweetheart of the Rodeo", the "new"…read morealbum (vinyl) from The Byrds, at Blue Eagle on their sound system while buying strings...I went through a lot of them in those days. Blue Eagle was a new-ish shop at the time. I'd bought a Martin D-28 in late '69 or early '70 at Durlauff's Music on the other side of town. I think they shut down? My friend worked at Durlauff's as a tech for a while and told me they were getting some in. I bought this one with my food allowance for the winter quarter. Who needs food, right? Anyway, many moons later, a corner of my most wonderful guitar got a hard shot from a coffee table. The impact put a crack in the top. I'm OK with a cracked guitar, but this crack ruined the sound. I took it to Blue Eagle, an authorized Martin repair dealer at the time. They were able to mend it and make it sound wonderful again. Lost John Hutchinson, a Bluegrass legend from around there, offered me $300 for it. Glad I didn't sell. I still have it..and still am probably not worthy of it. I was amazed and joyful when I visited Athens after nearly 5 decades and saw Blue Eagle Music still in the same location.
