I drive past Jerkin Chicken almost every day and always said, "One day I'll stop in." I finally did and it was one of the best decisions I've made. When you walk in, the aesthetic feels a little unfinished, almost like they're still moving in, but do not let that influence your expectations. The food does all the talking. I ordered the boneless jerk chicken platter, the chicken curry roti, and grabbed a beef patty from the display. I started with the beef patty flaky, warm, perfectly structured, and stuffed with incredibly seasoned meat. It practically melted in my mouth. Easily one of the freshest, most flavorful patties I've ever had. The boneless jerk chicken meal was outstanding. The chicken was moist with a subtle smoky flavor and a perfect kick from the jerk sauce. Paired with plantains and rice, it all came together beautifully. The chicken curry roti was just as impressive. The aroma alone hits you the second you open the wrapper. The curry was rich, flavorful, and the bone-in chicken inside was so tender it fell right off the bone. And the staff there was outstanding the woman that helped me was very nice. Very respectful all around amazing. Portions are generous, flavors are authentic, and everything tastes freshly made. I highly, highly recommend this spot to anyone craving phenomenal Jamaican food. This place is the real deal. read more

The food was pretty ok. I thought it could be spicier. I got the lunch special for the jerk chicken. Now for the flavor, it was solid pricing. For the portion, definitely could be more. I'm a big guy but I'm pretty conservative about where I spend my money and I just felt like I could have had more. Do I think the flavors were good, absolutely. But for the community, it's rough. I want everyone to eat good food but only if it's affordable. It's not just this one but others too. Service was good. And the interior it felt rustic and diner like, which I actually like. Only reason why I'm knocking it is price to portion ratio for the lunch special. But flavors, service is good in my book read more

Very friendly staff and tasty food. The jerkin chicken is very good and prices are ok. A bit on the higher side but a good amount of good food is always a plus! Definitely a must try for some good Jamaican food!! read more

My family and I ordered takeout from here since we were craving for Caribbean food. The reviews seem promising and the prices were decent. The food came pretty fast too. We ordered the oxtail meal, jerk chicken meal, jerk chicken taco and coco bread. -Oxtail with white rice and salad. The flavor was good but the portion was small. There was barely any meat and it was all bone. The sauce was delicious though! -Jerk chicken with rasta pasta and salad. The chicken was moist and flavorful. The rasta pasta was mediocre. I definitely had better elsewhere and it wasn't worth the extra $5 to substitute it. -Jerk chicken taco. This was good but the chicken was pretty dry. -Coco bread was good and soft. Good portion. Will definitely order from here again when I'm in the area. read more

I've ordered the jerk chicken on several occasions. Branched out today and also enjoyed the mac and cheese, plus swapped out rice and peas for rasta pasta for $5. Perhaps the MVP was the side order of hot sauce, a small container with a massive flavor. In several deliveries, speed has always been on the brisk side. read more

This was my 6th time ordering take out from Jerkin Chicken and there will be many more to come. This spot is not your typical Jamaican restaurant when it comes to service, quality and value. The service is always friendly and welcoming ( not typical of Caribbean restaurants). The prices are reasonable and the food is great. The decor could use some work, but as a take out spot it's fine. The jerk chicken, jerk salmon and jerk shrimp are excellent. The rice and peas are on point as well as the fried plantains and cabbage. My apologies, I forgot to take pictures of the food, next time! read more

Food ALWAYS BUSSIN EVERYTIME!!! I recommend this to anyone on any given day. I keep coming back

So I've definitely had better in East Orange and Brooklyn but considering the options in the area the food is ok. The spice level is rather low for jerk. And the service isn't bad or anything. People are just busy and taking orders while keeping things moving. I used to love the salmon but something changed with the recipe. Considering the options given West Side Ave this is still solid. read more

Satisfies when you have a Jamaican craving. I needed to get my fix and while nothing like my fave spots in Brooklyn, the food was pretty good. Neither bad nor great service or taste or overall experience. I'm glad they're in business and they've come in handy when I was hungry for more of a home cooked fast meal, so 3 stars is fine! Takeout only. No delivery. Fair prices. They seem to get great business given they are properly located so they can tend to run out of certain menu items by late evening. Enjoy! read more

Jerkin Chicken Restaurant - Stew Chicken Dinner with Yams - Caribbean Near Me - Jersey City, New Jersey

I have had Jerkin Chicken multiple times in the last few years but lately I'm not sure what has happened to the quality of food. Yesterday I had a taste for Oxtails and since my family don't eat them I just decided to pick some up. Prices have certainly gone up in the last two years and yes I can understand that but give the customer the same quality and don't skimp on the amount of food! I paid $20 for tough oxtails that had very little meat on the bone to begin with. 5 little pieces that looked as if they with cut smaller to make their amount seem more when they cooked them. Very disappointed. I have had the food truck near my home with no issues and maybe it was a bad day but no excuse for the amount of money. I simply won't take the chance again so sadly I won't eat from here going forward. read more

Today was my first time here. No dine in at this time...but there are some seats toward the entrance for you to wait for your order. Atmosphere could use some work. Not the cutest spot nor are they trying to be I guess. But, I did really enjoy one wall in there (photos attached). Customer service was basic and could seem cold but they are really straight to the point. No warm greeting, no smiles, just straight business. But not rude! Lastly and most importantly, THE FOOD. The food was decent, so-so. I was starving so I enjoyed it but I've had much much better elsewhere. Would I strongly recommended it? No. But if I was in the area and starving again I would go for it and maybe try another dish. read more

We stopped in for lunch. I was craving oxtails and they delivered. Flavor was on point. Meat was tender! Jerk chicken was also juicy. Definitely a mom and pop spot, no frills just casual. Its not a bad tasting place, its just a mediocre Caribbean spot. It just seem Americanized. The food is pretty decent. Nothing over the top. Seems pretty safe. Lack seasoning and flavor. However, my favorite thing here is the jerk chicken tacos with ranch. Feel like a salad in a taco and the jerk and ranch flavor makes this top tier. Its a small store and the service is never bad. read more

AMAZING FOOD! Very authentic, tasty and the shop just has a great ambiance overall. The photos and art on the wall are beautiful. I had the goat roti, which I thoroughly enjoyed but was not fond of all the fat and the empty bones. My friend enjoyed their jerk chicken, cabbage and rice, and the one plantain which was insanely amazing. Definitely a Jersey City Staple. read more

Reviews seemed promising so when I saw their truck parked at my apartment complex, I was super excited to try it. However, I was profoundly disappointed. One boneless jerk chicken over rice with cabbage and one tiny, measly piece of plantain was $14. That would be fine if the food was at least spot on, but it was bland, tasteless and cold. I asked for hot sauce and she only gave me one tiny container, not even halfway filled with hot sauce. I forgot to mention how small the portion was. Take my advice, save your money and give it to an establishment that deserves and knows what they're doing when it comes to food. You'll thank me later! read more

De. Li. Cious. This place really surprised me. I had tried Jamaican food before from another place and wasn't super impressed. I ordered lunch with some coworkers and was recommended to order the jerk chicken so that's what I did. With rice and beans and oxtail Gravy on top and cabbage. Omg. It was so delicious! I will def order from here again and am eager to try the macaroni and cheese next time. A tad on the pricy side in my opinion but worth it! read more

Jerkin Chicken Restaurant - Half jerk chicken lunch $13 - Caribbean Near Me - Jersey City, New Jersey

This place was bad. As im waiting for the food, all i hear in the back is the microwave going off. If i wanted reheated food, i would go to mcdonalds. Even tho i heard the microwave constantly being used, I thought i would give it a fair chance. Rice was stale. Clearly reheated. The curry goat was just ok. Portion size for $11 was abysmal. Will not be going back. I understand i went during this whole covid-19 scare, but if you know you will have limited customers, create a limited menu so you dont sacrifice on flavor. read more

Wow, all I can say is the food is missing one ingredient, "Love". Perhaps It was a bad day or something, but the best thing about the $12.00 Roti was the skin. The chicken was shredded with bones and muscle included. This was a phone order, made before physically walking to the location. After arriving there was still a 20 minute wait because the reception person had not given the order slip to the kitchen in 30 minutes (poor customer service). Ou of respect for this small business, perhaps Chef Gordon Ramsey should visit, the food and the ratings will definitely get better. One Love read more

I had the brown stew chicken, rice peas and veggies. I ordered a coco bread on the side this food was authentic. Another spot that I'm not sure why it has such a low review. Must be a Jersey thing not to give 5 stars but I'm from NYC so 5 stars it is. read more

Pros 1. I like the tropical cantina cafe fusion feel. 2. The Oxtails are Flavorful better than Golden Krust. 3. Roti was Flavorful but I took it home to Pan Fry it in Butter for a Light Crisp for some Texture. 4. I love seeing the Green Herbs in the Curry Goat. Cons 1. Jerk Chicken was Dry. 2. Sweet Plantains needs to be more Tender. 3. Rice and Peas was Undercooked. 4. Curry Goat was TOO Fatty and Not Enough Meat. read more

I ordered Jerkin Chicken vía UberEATS, my first time using UberEATS. Pretty cool, except I paid $4.99 booking charge and then a tip of $5.00 for the driver. I was jonesin' for some Oxtail. I ordered the jerk chicken dark meat with rice and peas and vegetable and an oxtail dinner with rice and peas and vegetable and a large macaroni and cheese. The oxtail has good flavor, but was mostly bone and the part that wasn't bone was fat. The little bit of meat was tough, they needed to be cooked longer. The rice and peas were great. The macaroni and cheese was lacking real flavor. They get an A for effort, but for the amount of money I spent I should have went to the grocery store and cooked it myself. Or went to Negril in NYC. Probably will not order from Jerkin Chicken again. read more

This is a down home sincere spot. My order of curry goat w/rice & peas was a hefty portion. I'm going to enjoy eating this for two days. Pepper sauce has an amazing flavor. Tbh I didn't expect much walking in to this restaurant. I was greeted with a smile and a good conversation regarding her passion for the food she cooks and the history of how she made this business happen. I walked away from this place with some amazing food which I later found (to-go) and a good lasting impression. I shall be back! Working at Jersey City I have seen their food truck quite often never really thought of trying it. However their food and the quality of it makes me want to try it out more often. Talk about portion size: Guys it was enough for 2 people haha. I paid 13$ for all of it. Flavor: Just the right amount of flavor and spice to make me eat the whole portion (by myself) and made me go to gym the next morning. I'll go to gym everyday to eat this kind of food. It was delicious! read more

This review is for the food truck, rather than the restaurant. One of the better lunch choices along Exchange Place: lunch specials of jerk chicken (boneless and otherwise), pork, shrimp and others come in a packed styrofoam container. Your choice of meat, rice & peas, fried plantains, and some salad will run between $7-14. The flavours are on point butt unless you ask them to douse it in pepper sauce, it's not as spicy as you''d expect/hope. read more

This place is pretty amazing! As a Puerto Rican, I am a sucker for any Caribbean cuisine ranging from Spanish, Trini, Haitian, and of course Jamaican food; Jerkin Chicken is not only wholesome Jamaican food but it is one of the finest eating establishments in North Jersey. The food is out of this world amazing and the staff is also very accommodating as well. The first time I visited Jerkin Chicken, I had the Jerk chicken, stew chicken, and a side order of sweet plantains. The entire meal was great and the stew chicken gravy in particular stood out. The second day I had the Jerk Chicken dinner combo along with the gigantic Jerk Chicken Wrap. The portions of food are quite generous and the people that state it is a little pricey are looking at the dollar amount but failing to take into consideration the quality of the food, sauces, sides, and the overall generous portions of food. You pay for what you get, and what you get is worth the money. I have been there twice in the past weekend and I am probably going back either today or tomorrow with a couple of friends. Jerkin Chicken is a great place, and I highly recommend it, Respect! read more

I went to google and read the reviews before I placed my order on UberEats and they were not promising but I still decided to give them a chance because I live in Secaucus and there's not many options for West Indian food and I can't go to Brooklyn every time I need some good West Indian food. One of the reviews said that they only give you a lot of rice with small pieces of whatever protein you ordered and I thought that person was exaggerating but they clearly weren't! DISAPPOINTMENT 1: I ordered Jerk Salmon and what I got was a lot of rice and peas with 2 small pieces of salmon and a disgraceful amount of "veggies" where was my cabbage? The salmon did not taste like jerk and the "jerk" sauce I had on the side taste like regular BBQ. DISAPPOINTMENT 2 I also ordered a small Mac and Cheese and I couldn't believe my eyes, this is supposed to be a West Indian restaurant so I'm expecting Macaroni Pie not tasteless mac and cheese and when I say tasteless I mean it literally taste like NOTHING, the boxed Mac and Cheese with powdered cheese my 16 year old brother makes has MORE taste than this Mac and Cheese. DO NOT waste your money. I guess I'll have to keep going to Brooklyn for some good ass Jamaican food... Fisherman's Cove I'm talking about you boo! FYI I don't have a picture of the food and regret not doing it so you could see what I'm talking about. The Mac and cheese in particular went straight to the trash after I had 3 spoonfuls and the only reason I even had 3 spoonfuls was because I had to make sure I wasn't bugging because that mac and cheese could not have been made at a Jamaican restaurant..... read more

Finally a good jerk chicken and pork truck. I thought I tried every truck around the Harborside area and they all sucked. I'm not Jamaican and my jerk chicken would run circles around all those other trucks. Then I saw this one for the first time with a long line. I asked a few people online if it was any good and all answered "I am Jamaican and this is good" so I had to try it. While the others are basically grilled chicken slathered in BBQ sauce, this one tastes like jerk spice. They have a delicious hot sauce to boot. Definitely not a cheap option but good for a jerk craving. Also not clear what their schedule is and their website is God awful. Least they can do is put up there location. I think they are only there on Thursdays in Harborside?? Not sure... read more

Giving them two stars is being generous. Decided to give this local restaurant a try, post Covid. I ordered the oxtail dinner and a side order of plantains. They didn't include the plantains and when I called the store, the young lady was undecided as whether or not that was too far bring me what I'd already paid for. The Oxtail dinner consisted of approximately two and a half cups of cooked rice (no exaggeration) and three very small pieces of Oxtail (also not an exaggeration). The taste was nowhere near authentic... Save your money and go somewhere else. The only thing more disappointing than those oxtails was the customer service. read more

I don't usually eat at food trucks but I was tempted when I saw this jerk chicken truck on Columbus Dr by Grove Street. I ordered the jerk chicken meal which came with a half jerk chicken cut up (I think it was half), rice and salad. The jerk chicken was well spiced up (but not too spicy which I liked). The chicken was tender, juicy and moist and it just fell off the bone which I loved. The rice was soft and flavorful with beans in it. The salad was crisp and fresh. Overall I would definitely eat here again. It looks like they have a storefront location too but this is a review for the food truck. read more

First time here but certainly not the last! Great family joint with authentic Jamaican flavors. Sorrel juice and jerk chicken are the closest I'll get to real jerk chicken from the island. Only thing missing is the roasting it with the wood in open air just like Jamaica. Oh yes, if she runs out, she runs out which is a great sign of no old food served the next day. read more

Never disappoint!! Blended seasoning for savory mouth watering dishes. Oxtails and rice & Peas were amazing!!

Me and my husband just spent 76 dollars. To be missing one of our meals. The driver gave us everything. This was highly disappointing to say the least. How could a restaurant like this moss one of our meals we ordered. I am big on customer service as I myself work in customer service. This is very unacceptable. If I was a celebrity I'm sure this restaurant wouldn't miss a beat. But they are human beings to. No matter who it is. All orders should be treated as priority. I don't think I would want to order from here again for fear of having something else missing next time. As for me and my husband we will go elsewhere. read more
