We took our daughter to Dr J because she is good with treating ADHD. We also take our kids to her for general health. We have been pleased with how she's handled the ADHD treatment and find it very easy to get appointments with her when the kids become sick and need to be seen quickly. The staff is very friendly and easy to work with.
That being said, we are likely going to discontinue using her as a provider. She's very blunt and has very little bed side manner. She's not warm or compassionate with the kids when they're sick and I often feel like I'm being chided by her. I do not feel comfortable having an open and honest dialogue with her if I'm disagreeing with her suggested course of treatment.
Our daughter is a vegetarian who loves sugar and tends to be inactive. She doesn't like many meat substitutes or veggies, so finding protein options that aren't a little high in carbs has proven difficult. She's carrying some extra weight that we are actively working to reduce. She's at an age where she's starting to form a body image and already has questionable self esteem. Dr J felt it was necessary at our last visit to call her "chubby" right in front of her and tell us to "stop giving her carbs". While I'm well aware that her weight is an issue, I find it really disappointing that a pediatrician would say something like that in front of the child. I'm not one of those parents who thinks we have to wrap our kids in bubble wrap to keep them from getting hurt in life, but I expect more from a pediatrician.
Another issue is how little assistance they give you when it comes to your mail order pharmacy. They will not call or fax the prescriptions in. You are expected to mail it in yourself. This may not seem like a big deal, but it's an inconvenience. I have had many doctors in my life and had very few who didn't work directly with my mail order pharmacy. I think most of us know by now how frustrating it can be to play the middle man between your pharmacy and your doctor, especially if issues arise.
Anyway, that's my feedback. If all you care about is the treatment of illness and don't expect warmth, compassion or an approachable manner, she's a fine doctor. If those things are important to you, I would look elsewhere. I do want to mention that the PA that works there is great. Much more warm and friendly. read more
