She brought energy and enthusiasm, which made a huge difference in keeping a group of first and second graders engaged. Nikki has a natural gift for teaching--she explained things in a way the kids could easily understand while still making it fun and interactive. My daughter came home talking all about what she learned, which says a lot. It's not easy to manage a group of young kids, but Nikki handled it with patience, positivity, and great leadership. We're so grateful for educators like her who make these experiences meaningful and memorable. Highly recommend this field trip for young students!

There were so many different types of birds (we saw thousands) and I even spotted a bald eagle. I appreciated that dogs are allowed and the park is open until an hour past sunset. For $75 (a BARGAIN) they ran the train as our own private railroad for 4 hours. There are also some historical buildings (and a few re-creations) and old, retired, "real" trains (steam engine and a caboose) on the fairgrounds near the railroad--so there's some other cool stuff to see. (Note that you can't go in to any of these buildings outside of the annual Glenn County Fair in May.) There are several grassy areas and some picnic tables that served as lunch spots for our guests. PLUS there are restrooms near the train "depot" area--near the old train depot and 1-room school building. (The restrooms are old and small, but they were very clean and nicely maintained.) it looks like the railroad has had a few web pages over the years, but there hasn't been much updated lately and some are no longer up and running. However, it's short enough that you can simply hug them to you for the 15-20 seconds required for this. Orland can be very hot in the middle of the summer, so a scheduled event could be canceled due to extreme heat conditions. (This would be a big disappointment, but nobody would have much fun if it's that hot.) You'll need to do some paperwork to get approval from the Glenn County Fairgrounds and the Orland Police, plus you'll need liability insurance (which you may have to purchase for the event), but it was all worth it. There are no restrooms at the usual picnic area (near the intersection of Papst & Yolo streets); the restrooms are about 100 yards away (near the old school and depot). This really isn't inconvenient, unless you have young children who need to go "right now!", and then that 2-minute walk could be a little too long.

Unfortunately, due to the current drought situation in California, the water fountain was shut off. No splashing around under the dragon spout. It's a beautiful park, but there are miscreants who visit the park, probably at night, that do not have any decency because there was an occasion when a tree was streamed with toilet paper. There are also some people who do not pick up after themselves or their pets. The city provides disposable bags for pet owners and trash bins are around park, yet some do not discard their waste in it including alcohol beverage containers (by the way, alcoholic beverages are not allowed). These are just a few instances. Thankfully, there is a park maintenance worker who comes around during the day and clean up other peoples messes. I come here occasionally to walk around the park and get a little exercise. I do get a weird look sometimes because I'm listening to music and stop abruptly to do a step aerobic routine depending on the song and rhythm. It may look odd, but at least I'm exercising instead of being a miscreant. Keep our park clean, respect the property and appreciate it please!

We went in March when the weather was unusually warm this year and the water was f l o w i n g. There isnt much tree cover as there used to be after the fires in this area, so if you're coming on a sunny day, be well prepared with sun protection and water. If you're coming out to the Clear Lake area looking for hiking, this is probably one of your best…read morebets. Pros: You don't have to go far up the trail to get picturesque glimpses of Clear Lake. Easy hike, terrain is not difficult footing even for kids. Parking lot right near trailhead, and seems like parking is not hugely popular so you're likely to get a spot. Cons: Looooooooong drive up... get ready to play I Spy with your kids for a good 20 minutes. Also if your passengers are prone to motion sickness, this isn't the greatest drive. Service vehicles also use the trail so if you have kids you'll need to keep them close by. Some areas may be muddy in winter months. If the bottom of the mountain is cold, it is WAY colder up here. Bring far more clothing than you might think is necessary.
