If beauty could be defined by pictures, Feather Falls would be at the top of the list. One of the tallest waterfalls in California and also one of the most gorgeous! I hiked up to Feather Falls with my group a few months back and it was one of the most scenic waterfalls that I've ever witnessed. Even in early summer, the falls were rampant and flourishing like no other. I could only imagine how it would look in the early spring time. Either way, I'm so glad that I got to experience such a marvelous view. The hike itself is an 8 mile loop, but you should add a mile if you're planning on hiking above the falls. If your body can handle 9 miles, do it! It's so worth the extra hike to the top of the falls! Some of us hiked to the top and put our feet in the water as we ate lunch and chilled on the rocks. The waterfall itself is amazing, but being at the top is even more wonderful. You'll feel like you're on top of the world for sure. There's an actual lookout point that you can hike down to get the best view of the falls! There are a few benches where you can sit and relax but I imagine that it can get crowded depending on the time of day that you go. You'll also have a stunning view of Middle Fork Feather River on the opposite side. Totally worth the sore muscles! I won't go into too much detail about the hike here (There's another listing for the actual trailhead), but a word of advice: take the lower trail to the upper trail if you want a less strenuous hike. We did the opposite and it was all uphill on the way back and felt like a journey to the end. Make sure you wear LOTS of bug spray and bring plenty of water! Mosquitos galore! Other than that, this was one of the most stunning waterfalls that I've ever seen. Totally worth the hike!

Would definitely recommend this hike if you're tryna go out with dem boys, toss a little football, swim and get wet, eat a lunch while overlooking from the top of a waterfall. This place is like a mini version of Yosemite so if you don't feel like driving too far, come here. The is doable for most hikers, trust me. I started off at 8AM and ended around 12:50 back at my car. It's about 3.5-4.5 one way. So probably 10 miles round trip if you're going to the top of waterfal, which you must. Follow the gps on here, takes you right there. Should be signs as well. There should be a bathroom. Enter the hike and you'll get to a fork. I went right/upward (4.5 miles to top). The bottom/left is supposedly harder (I plan to do next time). I've heard it's best to start lower and then finish coming back the upper route. Remember hike hard in beginning to reward yourself with the waterfall view. Then chill hike back to car. The trail leads to the overlook. The actual trail to top of waterfall seems hidden. It's just a fork to the left (see pictures). About 0.75 miles more. Careful of poison oak. It's not directly on the trail to it. But you can spit it. "If it has three leafs. Let them be". The hike is SHADED. So don't trip about heat. But bring water of course. Bring bug spray, so effing annoying flies. You can swim at the top in very small water pools. Water was clear and clean. I went in September. I went on a Tuesday(it was empty). I went in morning and enjoyed the whole waterfall to myself. Bring your damn drone. I forgot mine. Enjoy! My baby dogs did it. So can you.

For those of y'all who know me well, you're probably aware of my extreme risk-aversion. If there's any chance of danger, no matter how big or small, my anxiety alarm will flash and I'll be like NOPE! So you may find it surprising that there have been a couple instances where the stupid region of my frontal cortex has taken over and put me in precarious situations. Not coincidentally, most have involved hiking. Most recently, my friends and I made plans to visit Feather Falls in the Plumas National Forest. If you haven't been living under a rock, you'll know that the tragic Carr and Mendocino Complex Fires have been ravaging NorCal - pretty much ~100-200 miles from where our trail was. Despite guaranteed exposure to ash and thick air, we went anyway; because this was considered one of the tallest and most beautiful waterfalls in the U.S., we weren't about to pass. Getting to the parking lot wasn't all that bad for us. The trailhead was about an hour or so from where we stayed in Marysville, and all we pretty much had to do was drive dead east and follow signs for Feather Falls. Since most people stayed indoors due to the fires, we encountered very minimal traffic on the way there. Once we arrived at the gigantic parking lot, we braced ourselves for the arduous adventure that was about to come. Oh yea, and we made sure to avoid the vault toilets. Looked and SMELLED like they hadn't been cleaned for months. The trail(s) to Feather Falls consisted of about 4.5 miles of diverse scenery and wildlife. One moment we were crawling through thick brush and another we found ourselves amongst a field of massive trees. There were deer, lots of squirrels, and butterflies as well! About 10 minutes into the hike, our main path split into two trails: Upper (right) and lower (left) trails. We ended up taking the upper one, and overall it was pretty chill. I would say 90 percent of it was flat, and we also saw some pretty cool stuff such as a mini waterfall (not Feather Falls) and Bald Rock Down - essentially Butte County's version of Half Dome! Around 2 hours later, we came across it. I can't even describe in words how magnificent Feather Falls was. I've chased waterfalls all along the Pacific Northwest, seeing beasts such as Multnomah and Metlako Falls, but few have come close to what we encountered. In short, Feather Falls was spectacular. It was taller than anything I've ever seen, the crashing of water on water was deafening, and I felt so spellbound watching the rainbow form at the bottom of the falls. It was awesome that the trail included a walkway and an overlook that was safe, yet provided an amazing view of the waterfall. But it didn't end there. Thanks to some advice from a couple of chill bros, we took a 10-minute detour uphill and reached the actual TOP OF THE WATERFALL. Who knew this was possible? Apparently, lots of hikers come to Feather Falls not knowing that you could be literally NEXT to Feather Falls. All we had to do was head left instead of going back the way we came after leaving the walkway. This path took us to a watering hole which would lead to the start of the waterfall. We probably spent around 1-2 hours here swimming in cold water, eating, and chilling. It was bliss; we pretty much forgot about the hike and the fires during these peaceful moments. As all things must come to an end, so we eventually took the lower trail back. Though it was the same distance, the return journey was DIFFICULT. Kind of regretted going this way because it was mostly uphill. There was more sunlight and plenty of rocks to climb over. So if you're looking for an easier time getting to and from Feather Falls, I suggest taking the upper trail there and back. Or at least, take the upper trail back. Nevertheless, we persevered and eventually made it back to the car. So how much did the fires and the ashen-filled air hinder our trip? Looking back, it was a STUPID mistake. Regardless of how amazing the experience was, I'm pretty sure we lost a few years off of our lives. Though we encountered many hikers along the way, it was pretty difficult to breathe - especially on the way back. Poor air quality or not, if you are planning on checking out this experience I HIGHLY RECOMMEND keeping in mind a few things: First off, bring bug spray and first aid. Lots of inspects bit us, and we tried SO HARD to avoid the poison ivy. "Leaves of 3, let it be." Secondly, bring double the water you need cause you WILL need it. Third, COME EARLY because it got SO HOT later on. Fourth, be very careful in the water at the top of the waterfall, as the current WILL push you off. Since Yelp limits my character count, I'll just end by saying this. If you get the chance, please check out Feather Falls. It's truly one of the coolest things I have ever done. Pictures can only do so much justice; you have to go yourself. I give it an "Omg, I'd travel 2 hours for this" rating. Have fun and prosper,

I hiked here just yesterday, and I have to say that the tough travel is worth it! Making it to the over look and waterfall is so rewarding and the view is amazing!! Even the scenery along the hike is breath-taking. My two friends and I decided to take the upper trail (4.5 miles one way) and it wasn't too challenging. Most of the trail was low altitude and the coverage from all the trees and shrubbery kept the temperature cool and moist. There were certain spots where the sky opened up and the greens turned to browns and tans; that's when the sun shone down hard and made us sweat! We first hiked to the actual top of the waterfall and spent a good hour camera whoring :) They have a section caged so you can go to the very edge and take pictures, although the fence makes it hard to get good pictures. There was also a sign that someone had died there, and although it was sad, it was also a reminder to stay safe and think smart when moving along the edges. After we soaked up enough of the view, we started back and went to the lower outlook, which was across the waterfall. This view was just as incredible and we definitely wanted to stay there to enjoy the scenic view. Prior to the hike, I had done research and saw that the lower trail was closed due to reconstruction. When we started the hike, we saw that a trail had been closed off, so that's why we took the upper trail. On the way back, however, they did not make any note that the shorter trail (3.3miles) would take us along the lower trail. These last few miles KILLED us. 90% of it was ALL incline, and a steep incline I might add. I've run a marathon and am in the process of training for another, and I was still out of breath despite the amount I run! Not only was altitude climbing a killer, a bridge had been destroyed by a tree that fell over on it, and we had to climb over it to make it back!! But at the end of the day, we had no complaints and enjoyed the painful-yet-rewarding trip. Looking back at the pictures reminds me of the great time we had. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a challenging hike!

This hike was very tough for me at the time because I was totally out of shape and it was all straight up what felt like a mountain. I have yet to go on such a challenging height, of course it might not be so hard for me now that I am in better shape. When we arrived at the trail-head the first thing I saw was all the gorgeous trees, it was beautifully green and the air was clear and fresh. As you arrive you see a sign that gives you two choices, either the left path or right path. The sign fails to warn anyone about the left trail, the strenuous one, luckily I already knew about it from researching it a little online. Boy were we in for a serious workout! Luckily we came prepared with lots of water and snacks to keep us going. Once we reached the top we got to see the waterfall, although I was a bit disappointed that I could not get in or under or even near the waterfall, that is what I was hoping for anyway. On the way back we decided to take the easy route which was WAAAY easier! We saw a creek on the way back and decided to jump in, mind you this was in July so it was super hot, even so, the water was freezing cold, it gave me the slap in the face I needed at the time. So, if you want to just go for an easy walk, take the right path, if you want more of a hike take the left, they both end up at the waterfall.

Feather Falls is a good hike for a moderate workout. The drive in is long and windy. The parking lot is a good size with a restroom at the trail head (caution: the restrooms have no lights, so bring a flashlight if it's getting dark). We wanted to go on the 3.3 mile lower falls trail because it's supposedly easier, but it was closed due to a bridge being out. Oh well, we're hiking to get into better shape anyway! The 4.5 mile upper falls trail is well-maintained and has a decent width, which is important when you want to pass or be passed by other hikers. The first half of the trail was shaded but it starts pretty sunny after that... the incline also gets tougher around the time the trees thin out. What really kicked our butt is the last bit after the Middle Fork Feather River scenic point. After that you hike downward to a wooden 'patio' which gives a great view of the Feather River and the Feather Falls... the only problem is that part is steep with lots of large steps. My thighs hurt just thinking about those steps! So my summation of the upper falls trail: moderately hard (I'm not grossly out of shape but I'm not Jillian Michaels, either!), good sweaty workout, great picturesque views. We'll be back to try the lower falls trail.

It was super beautiful and the lookout was so unique! Hike is long, make sure you know where you are going cause trails aren't marked all that well. It was really peaceful and a nice long hike! Not too busy at all.

    Beautiful for miles!

I'm giving this a 4 because the hike was more difficult then we thought it would be. The actual falls view is beautiful and it's especially amazing if it's just you and a small party have the whole place to yourselves. This is no easy hike and it is 9+ miles if you do the 4.5 both ways from the parking area. Now I know that the 3.3 I've reviewed is more difficult, but let me say if your a hiker this will be ok for you. If you're a semi once in a while hiker this is a challenge! My kids who are physically fit from ages 8yrs to 12yrs even said it was difficult! Not recommended for little ones!!! Bring LOTS OF WATER!!! We thought we had enough lucky for us the first falls provided us with clean water to fill our empty bottles on the way back. The hike to the falls was ok, but the way back was very tough, warm weather and inclines took a toll on us all. Had it been down hill on the way back we would have been just fine. I'm glad we did it, probably a one time deal. Love to hike, but not over 9 miles at one time. We started at 12pm and got back to parking are at 5:30ish. Still day light savings.

I hiked this trail with my group in early June, and needless to say, this was one of the most beautiful and also one of the most challenging hikes that I've done. The entire loop measures about 8 miles, but you should add another mile if you plan to hike to the top of the falls. We started on the Upper Trail which is about 4.5 miles long. We took this trail to the top of the falls, then to the falls Overlook, and then to the Lower Falls trail which looped us back to the beginning of the trailhead. But be forewarned; if you take the Lower Falls trail back, the hike is very strenuous and not very well maintained. Right from the gate, you can see that this trail was filled with tons and tons of poison oak. If you don't know what poison oak looks like, you should look it up before you decide to come here. It's a beautiful plant, but you definitely don't want it touching you. And trust me, it's everywhere. All over the trails! I would recommend that you wear long pants and sleeves, especially if you're allergic. Also, there are tons of bugs! Lots of mosquitos and even ticks. Spray yourself with bug spray before you hit the trail. We sprayed and we still got bitten up pretty badly. Luckily, I didn't find any ticks on myself though. We also spotted a rattlesnake on the trail and you should also note that there have been bear sightings in the past. Just be aware of your surroundings. Okay, so now that I've gotten the scary stuff out of the way, let's focus on the actual hike. The hike through the Upper Trail is really pretty! It starts out flat and inclines gradually. It's full of greenery and mostly shaded. You'll pass over a small bridge that overlooks a baby waterfall that flows into a beautiful creek. There are ferns and flowers all throughout the trail. You'll see giant ants crawling on the ground. You'll also get a wonderful view of Bald Rock Dome which looks likes a mini Half Dome (Yosemite), and a sweeping view of the Middle Fork Feather River. The Overlook point to Feather Falls will be down some stairs and to the left. There are signs that will help to guide you. The view of Feather Falls is just simply breathtaking! The images are stunning but even they can't do it justice. You will truly have to just experience it for yourself. If you're up for some fun, I would highly recommend hiking to the top of the falls. It's seriously unbelievable up there. Storybook views, crystal clear water, and vivid greenery. It'll make you feel like you just walked into an enchanted forest. Like, is this really real? On the way back from the falls, we took the Lower Falls Trail back. This trail is a mile shorter than the Upper Falls Trail, but 10 times more strenuous. If you're looking for a less strenuous hike, either take the Lower to Upper Trail Loop or take the Upper Falls Trail there and back. Otherwise, you'll be in for a steep climb. Not only is this trail all uphill until the very end, it's also not well maintained. It's super rocky with lots of trees blocking the trail that you'll have to climb under and over. Parts of the trail are narrow and slippery. You should also make sure that you bring waaay more water than you think that you'll need because you WILL need it. After 9 miles of hiking, we were tired but felt extremely accomplished. The restrooms aren't the cleanest and the parking lot is pretty small, so I'd advise that you get there early. Would I do this hike again? Definitely! I would just take a different route and bring a stronger bug repellent. In the end, this hike is worth it for the views of one of the tallest waterfalls in California.

Totally blew passed the turn for the loop on the way down so it was more of an out and back for us. Approximately 3.41 miles to the falls. Didn't have a problem with bugs but bring bug spray.
