This is a beautifully presented museum in the former Auburn Automobile Company headquarters. The…read morerestored Art Deco building is impressive on its own, with polished floors, elegant architecture, and cars displayed in what feels more like a gallery than a typical auto museum. The collection focuses on Auburn, Cord, and Duesenberg automobiles, along with the history of the company, its designers, and the people who built the cars. Everything is clean, organized, and thoughtfully labeled. The vehicles are presented with enough space to appreciate their design and craftsmanship. The museum next door has a much more industrial feel and a broader variety of vehicles, but this one stands out for its architecture, refinement, and focused collection. Well worth visiting, even for someone who is not a serious car enthusiast.

This place proves "they don't make em like they used to"! Auburn or Cord or a logo or even a particular engine, so many details squeezed into a single vehicle... in the wheels, taillights, mirrors, bumpers, etc... they clearly took pride in their work! Indiana's official "State Historic Sites" are remarkable gems bringing life to treasured Indiana…read morememories. The Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site is located in Rome City, a Noble County city located on Sylvan Lake. This is one of two homes of Stratton-Porter to be named state historic sites (the other is Limberlost). Considered Stratton-Porter's "cabin," this home is located among 148 acres and surrounded by fields, woods, and formal gardens. Did you know that Stratton-Porter is Indiana's most widely read female author? She was also a nature photographer, naturist, and entrepreneur. Her novels include "The Song of the Cardinal" and "Michael O' Halloran." The Carriage House Visitor Center is a great place to stop when here. You can wander around the grounds, explore her library, and even watch rare video footage of this early 20th century writer. Admission is free to Indiana State Museum members and children under the age of 3. Otherwise, it's $6 for ages 3-17, $5 for Indiana college students (ID required), $8 for seniors (60+), and $9 for other adults. Access Pass members are also $5. Indoor tours are only available by reservation for groups of four or more by calling the site at 260.854.3790. Groups of 10 or more receive $1 off full-priced admission per person, based on age. Admission is FREE for pre-registered, accredited schools and homeschool groups of 10 or more K-12 students. It's important to note that the site is open April-November. Accessibility is a bit inconsistent, though given the age of the house that's to be expected. There's definitely a good effort made (as is true for most historic sites). I did feel like a few tweaks could have improved it a bit (thus the 4-star), however, I still had lots I could enjoy here and I found it incredibly relaxing. As a writer myself, there's something awesome about enjoying Indiana's writing history. You can also host events here! I'm a big fan of Indiana's state historic sites and I'm trying to make my way to all of them. This is a definite gem and should be considered for a stop if in the Noble County (think Kendallville) area.

The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society is located just outside of Fort Wayne in New Haven. My…read morefamily came to the historical society on December 2, 2023 for their annual Christmas Caboose trains. It certainly was an interesting experience. It's in a real train yard, and you have time before boarding to tour of the engine of a train and speak to people who have been engineers on a train. Truly fascinating. It was a cold day, thankfully they also had a food truck the sold coffee and hot chocolate available, i grabbed a coffee on the way out. They also had a gift shop available, it sold shirts, coffee mugs, carved wooden trains and other items. Once the train was ready, we got coach area and off we went. It was a small train ride, just 20 minutes. This train ride, also was really meant more for children. There was a santa who would go from passenger car to passenger car to great children. I would definitely recommend this one to anyone who has children! The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical society also runs longer rides from other areas and they have interesting events. I would suggest you look at their website: https://fortwaynerailroad.org Again, although this was meant more for children and families with children, it was a fun experience and helped me think of a time where trains were the primary mode of long distance transportation in landlocked areas. It made me want to go on ones more for adults and i may go on another from the historical society. I also want to go and travel long distance on a train to a destination in the future, perhaps one over mountains! That sounds cool! Again, I definetly recommend this!

Making reservations was easy to do on line. The Angola depot was easy reach as it is located right by a large parking lot on the Trine campus. Upon arrival everything is pretty well signed and straightforward. Lots of friendly-train-loving volunteers to get you to the correct location. The check in process was very easy as you showed you electronic tickets. They gave you an event card and drink tickets. The host, Starr, was absolutely a gem. She and the rest of the staff was very friendly and genuinely grateful that you were there. The trio of musicians was a nice touch. Very friendly group of guys just playing some easy going old-time music to put you in the mood. The drink line was a bit long. However they had a decent selection of drinks. It was nice that they let you bring your own food and drinks to supplement theirs. The chocolate pies were very tasty. The chocolate was rich and creamy with a nice flaky crust. As for the ride..you will find that the seating is very tight. Today's passengers are much bigger than those in the 1800's. It is very difficult for Teo couples to sit in the same grouping of seats. The good news is there is lots of "extra" seating in which you can spread out once everyone is seated. On this trip they advertised it as wine and chocolate. We used four drink tickets to get a bottle of wine from Hartland winery. That is a good partnership for the train as Hartland does an jive job with their wines. The provided chocolates were a small pastry and a "cheesecake style" ball. The chocolate pasty was delicious as it was rich and had a bold dark chocolate taste. Made you wish it were a bit larger. The cheesecake bit was very soft, creamy and had a traditional plain cheesecake taste. It was covered in a crumble of crust that made it easier to handle. Note...the emphasis of the trip really isn't the wine or dessert...it's the train adventure. Which was worth it. The car ride was rather smooth. Maybe enough to rock you to sleep. At times they struggled with the A/C. The country side was nice...not a lot of real attractive things on our route. It was nice to see how the communities embraced the train as it rolled through their towns. Overall...great experience. Give it a try!! It another note. I heard some people talk about purchasing premium seating. We found that the regular prices seating was just as enjoyable.

The museum is very focused on early Ford V-8 vehicles, but the collection still has a surprising amount of variety. There are beautifully restored coupes and sedans, a bright yellow vintage taxi, a fire truck, exposed engines, old Ford signs, photographs, and other period memorabilia. The vehicles look incredible, with polished chrome, whitewall tires, original-style details, and displays explaining what you are looking at. The building itself is also impressive. The outside has a distinctive Art Deco look, while the inside is clean, bright, spacious, and extremely well maintained. Both the museum and the cars were spotless. Admission costs less than a sandwich, which makes this one of the better-value attractions in the area. Even if you are not a serious Ford expert, it is still worth visiting for the craftsmanship, history, and quality of the collection.
