Not on any meds, have all my teeth and never a major surgery so you can trust my testimony. I've had several yrs. of excruciating pain shooting thru my upper back all the way down to my toes. I've been diagnosed with Sciatica, Arthritis and body misalignment. I've had Chiropractic treatment, physical therapy, even holistic therapy, but nothing worked until I was recommended to Dr. Darin Awaya at Kuakini. After just one MRI and Xray, like a Wiz, he knew right off what caused all this pain I had for years. None of the other "professionals" saw the cause let alone how to eliminate it. Then, after having the surgery when I took my first steps, I realized all the pain was completely gone. Ultimately, I was able to return to normal activities which I had to cutback: household duties, Power walking, Aerobics, hiking & traveling. Dr. Awaya knows his craft. He's a knowledgeable, no-nonsense, truthful professional who is dedicated to helping people get back to normal. I am living proof of that.

Especially since my own family of 8 siblings have all passed. I was the youngest and am now 76. Sadly, they all passed from cancer or heart disease. My dad died when I was one of heart disease. My mom was a diabetic, suffered heart disease and sadly succumbed to Alzheimers towards the end of her life. I tell all this to confirm the seriousness with which I write a review for Dr Kane and Wendy. To finally meet the most compassionate medical care practitioners is karma coming back to me for the positive energy with which I try to live my life now. Dr. Kane is a caring human being first; a doctor second. He is the first doctor who let me tell him about myself first. My thoughts and anecdotal history about my symptoms. Before he went into his medical expertise. No doctor before him has ever shown as much interest in getting to know the person behind the ailments. How refreshing to feel seen. And then really heard. Being the youngest of 9, I often felt invisible. And in those days, "children were seen and not heard." Dr. Kane explained the reasons for my symptoms regarding my right knee pain. Thankfully, it was not a recurrence of my meniscus tear from 2017. It was just a little irritation to a bit of arthritis. Thank God! Trickier is my recurring frozen shoulder. But Dr. Kane delivered what I had hoped he could. Because of breathing issues to do with one of my diseases, I should not have anesthesia. So, my shoulder will be anestathized, not me. I will immediately follow up with PT. Thank you, God! For Dr. Kane and Wendy, who handles everything with such grace and amazing speed. I love them both. Like ohana. Hugs and much aloha to both of them. Millie Vierra

Didn't want the customer to slip so I took the initiative to bring the drinks to their table. I didn't know colleague mopped in front of our work station and both legs flew up as I exited the swinging door... Torn rotator cuff. After x-rays and an MRI, took some time for worker's comp to approve this procedure and the day finally came. Was given explicit instructions prior to this day and after following them, I checked in at Minimally Invasive Surgery Hawai'i (MIS), which is located on the 6F of Hale Pawa'a. MIS is state of the art surgery center which has a team of professionals who perform orthopedic, musculoskeletal care and spine care procedures. I've never experienced this before and didn't know what to expect so I found myself asking my sister, who has 30yrs experience as a registered nurse, with questions. My concerns were alleviated as I believed in professionals and their knowledge and expertise. I was informed by the office of Dr. Darryl Kan and complied with the instructions provided to me. Upon check in I had my RN sister accompany me just in case I needed clarification and to ensure a smooth process. To be frank I was somewhat concerned as there was not one other patient in the check in area. It was just my sister, myself and the staff behind the counter. I was escorted to the back where I changed into a gown and received instructions as well as the attending professional reiterated today's procedure. Once again, nerve block was explained in simpler terms where I understood. It scared me but once again I had to trust the process. When it was my turn, I was rolled into the operating room where Dr. Kan greeted me in an upbeat manner and briefed me on what's to come. This was done over 8 months ago so I don't recall what happened after except finally waking up to some noise. The nurse (?) greeted and checked up on me. I was a little groggy and she must have read my mind as I was thirsty and hungry. I was offered an array of drinks and some snacks to choose from. When I was post groggy stage, the staff called my brother in law as he was designated to pick me up as I'm not allowed to drive after my procedure. I remember presented with non-slip socks and escorted to the 1F via wheelchair. Overall, I am very pleased and satisfied with MIS as they walked me through this process that was nerve-racking from the get go. From Dr. Kan, his staff and the staff at MIS, I was treated with great care and professionalism.

My journey with painful and swollen knees after running, jogging, hiking, aerobics classes, playing…read moreracquetball, and golfing began over fifteen years ago. Still, I stubbornly, or should I say "stupidly," held out for a year before making an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon my PCP referred me to, Dr. Jay Marumoto, at Queens Medical Center. After a physical examination and imaging (X-rays and MRI) tests, it was determined that I was suffering from bilateral knee osteoarthritis and torn meniscuses. After receiving the diagnosis, Dr. Marumoto counseled me about having the surgeries performed on separate dates. Still, I chose to have both knee meniscus repairs done in one visit at the medical center's Same Day Surgery Clinic. At my follow-up, I was recovering quickly with a great range of motion and experienced minimal pain. Still, Dr. Marumoto counseled me about the osteoarthritic progression and said, "See you in about 15 years." Thirteen years had passed when I requested to see Dr. Marumoto last August, because more pain and stiffness had returned to my right knee. Still, I decided to get knee strengthening physical therapy before our May 2025 trip to Japan and Korea, before deciding on a total knee replacement. The right knee strengthening sessions went well. However, on the second day of our trip, I exacerbated my situation when I tripped on a curb and fell onto my "less affected" left knee and face-planted. Luckily, I didn't need hospitalization or emergency medical attention, so I nursed myself for the rest of our 21-day cruise with affirming thoughts of scheduling a knee replacement on my right knee after returning home from our trip. When I confirmed my desire for the total knee replacement, Dr. Marumoto suggested that instead of having the surgery done at the hospital where there is more potential for nosocomial infection, he recommended performing the Outpatient surgical procedure at Minimally Invasive Surgery of Hawai'i (MIS). MIS is located on the 6th Floor in the Hale Pawa'a Building at the corner of South Beretania and Ke'eaumoku Streets. My husband accompanied me to my 8 am check-in, where we met the friendly and cheerful receptionist, Nadine. I like the electronic check-in process and completed it within a few seconds before sitting with Nadine to confirm my identification, medical insurance coverage, HIPAA protections, and estate plans. The waiting room was chilly, but I didn't mind since I brought a light sweater and wore warm, comfortable clothes. As the morning sun brightened and warmed the clean waiting room, I cuddled in a corner and caught up on reading e-mails. Soon, John, a smiling and welcoming nurse dressed in bright red scrubs, called me to enter the pre-operative holding unit/recovery room, where he took my vitals. Another nurse, Ameika (sp?), confirmed my name, birthday, surgeon's name, and scheduled procedure while settling me into a holding area with a warm and comfy bed. Ameika set me up with IV fluids and let me relax in bed with privacy drapes drawn. I also met with the OR nurse, Jackson, and the anesthesiologist, Dr. Louis Chun. Before discussing any information, each person confirmed my name, birthday, and surgical procedure. Of course, Dr. Marumoto popped in for a few moments to greet me and, I guess, to check on my state of mind since I was excited to get this procedure done. I last remembered being transported into the surgical suite. After a restful sleep, I awoke hungry and thirsty in the recovery room. Ameika informed me that they had contacted my husband to pick me up, and she got me ready to be wheeled downstairs to the porte cochère. Before leaving the recovery room, she provided me with an Ice Man Clear Cold Therapy Unit, although I had prepared reusable ice packs or wraps at home because we don't keep ice cubes. Thanks to the comfortable, clean, well-staffed, and knowledgeable medical and nursing staff, I'm on my way to a positive outcome. Also, because I had such a wonderful experience, I'm looking forward to having my other knee replaced next year, after another planned trip abroad.

After my initial…read moreconsultation, I was instructed to communicate with his assistant, Megan, for all further accommodations... except Megan didn't reach out to me so I called the office several times. Most of the time they don't answer the phone. After I finally left a voicemail and hadn't heard back in several days, I resorted to messaging them via their Contact Us page. Then someone other than Megan called to tell me Megan would submit the paperwork and reach out after insurance approved it. Fast forward a few weeks later, Megan calls to schedule me for surgery 11 days away. That's fine, except two weekends and Thanksgiving are a part of those 11 days, land she says they need the results asap, so I had to rush around to get 3 pre-op appts done in two days. Okay... except I go to get my neck scan done and they say they didn't get my referral. I left, came back a couple hours later, then I was instructed to return the next day because "sometimes it takes a bit to come in"... I go back the next day, and they Still don't have my referral. Then Megan is calling me to tell me I need to get the scan done. WOW. I finally had to tell her I don't know what they expect me to do, I go there and they don't have the referral but all you all can tell me is that you sent it and will resend it. Well obviously they're not receiving it so why do we keep doing the same method? Also, they clearly do not care for their patients if they know you need spinal surgery but don't mind having you drive back and forth for a few days to the hospital, park, walk to the lab, sit and wait (sitting was painful pre-surgery btw) every time. It's no surprise that they called to ask me to push my surgery back a couple of days. I don't see what the rush was anyway - they had me wait for weeks, then all of a sudden (after they know they'll get their money) we're in hyper speed mode. Fast forward to Post surgery and they send me to get scans Again. Different lab and guess what. Same story. I messaged the office and the person there was very short with me but sent the printout to my email to show the lab. Now I have a $400 bill that I'm seeing for the "first" time and the invoice states I'm being charged twice for late fees. I paid upfront for my portion of the surgery, why would I dodge a much smaller bill and be "late"? Also, I have no idea what the bill is for (X-rays are paid separately to the labs). I called and messaged the office numerous times to confirm. No one answers the phones and they haven't responded to my messages for the past week. I would not recommend this practice to anyone. I recommend you find a different provider that cares.

Everything was done in a quick and professional manner. I'm hopping that I'll have great results with the epidural and find some pain relief there. I had a great experience with my visit with Dr. Noh.

We made an appointment for Tuesday (2 days after seen at the ER which was huge plus..Doctors these days are hard to get an appt with) and he was straight forward. As he reviewed CT/Xrays we were told my husband case was severe, and if surgery does not happen soon then he could be paralyzed especially because my husband was losing feeling on all his left side on body (hands down to his leg). We immediately scheduled for a procedure and was given a date/time of surgery a few days after. My husband was was explained that he was to do a C4-5, C5-6, C6-7 Decompression & Anterior Cervical Discectomy & Fusion. His staff had told us that authorization frm his insurance was approved and everything was ready to go. His surgery was moved up a week earlier (another huge plus). Dr Morris always was straight to the point and said he may or not get feelings back which crushed our world. We could only pray and hope for the best. Day of procedure: We checked in Kinau surgery center. My son and I was able to come in back with him while he was getting prepped for surgery up until it was time. He was in the operating room for about 4-5 hrs (as Dr Mitsunaga explained). Once it was done, he came out and looked for us in the waiting room. He came out and shook my hand and updated us with how things went. When i heard him say "everything went successful" it was a huge relief. We were able to see him shortly after in the recovering room. Dr Mitsunaga said he may or may not have appetite and hoarseness due to approach of surgery (anterior), but it all depends on the patient. To my surprise, he was up, making jokes with the nurses, and asking to eat. He was alittle groggy but i could tell Dr Mitsunaga did a great job! We stayed IP for about 2 days and had to do f/up, PT, etc. Fast foward to 3 months later... My husband is walking and ALL feelings came back to normal. He is back to work FT and more happy than ever. When I arrived for surgery, I was told by one of the nurses, that I was lucky, he was the best surgeon, and she worked with all of them. I'd rather have the best doctor, who's a little cocky, than the worst, who's as nice Mr. Rogers.

I still have pain but it's tolerable and manageable now and I can work full days. Dr. Kaan is not the warm and fuzzy type but when it comes to surgery his work is incredible. I've been apart of support groups and seen a lot of surgery pictures and he's extremely accurate and he bends the the hardware to match a more natural curve so it's not so straight that it causes more pain. My scar is actually beautiful and he takes extra time to make that happen. I had Kaiser at the time and Kaiser dropped the ball on my pre and post care. I didn't do enough due diligence on my part but it was frustrating. They were supposed to take me off birth control and I ended up with blood clots. The hospital put me on thinners too soon causing hematomas all up and down my spine and they didn't take me seriously when I told them something was very wrong. My husband had Dr. Kaan come in and there was a debate on what to do. They ended up putting in a DVT filter but never checked my lungs or anything. Once I got home I couldn't recover and then they found the PE's in my lungs so that was pretty scary stuff. It felt like Kaiser and his office had very poor communication but at the end of the day I am alive and well and the work Dr. Kaan did was worth the battle. The only thing I would have done differently is be more prepared myself and ask more questions and understand the real risks and what to do in case complications happen. You really have to take some responsibility when it comes to your health because doctors are just people too and a lot of them are over worked and doing the best they can. Always have an advocate stay with you. My husband saved me so many times I lost count. My brain was pretty messed up for a while and I couldn't figure out what was what. Like I was in a foggy dream and timeline's didn't exist. If you get a good nurse be extra kind to them and communicate about the details of this surgery. I looked like a normal, young, healthy female so sometimes they didn't understand the severity of the surgery I just had and my husband had to be there just to make sure they moved me gently and not like a rag doll. I grew 2 inches and somehow it caused a hiatal hernia that made it almost impossible to stand for a while. Kaiser told me it was just acid reflex and I knew for sure it was something else. I was so disappointed with Kaiser I actually switched my insurance and I'm glad I did. Kaan is not with Kaiser just to be clear. They contract him out. He's 100% the right man for the job. Just remember he's focused on the mechanics and keeping you alive and I am fine with that. The rest is a collective effort that includes yourself. Lessons learned!
