I am every stylists worst nightmare. A mess of over-processed, curly hair that I wear straight. I saw Jeffrey yesterday for the first time in ages, because I fully admit I have been neglecting my hair. I had cut AND colored it myself, two big no-nos, as well as having about four inches of roots to deal with. I came in with hair that was three different colors and felt like a Brillo pad, and left with hair that was soft, actually moved when I shook my head, and was in an actual stylized cut that flattered my face. A combination of highlights, a new all over color, and a keratin treatment made me feel like a human being again. I even received TWO compliments on my hair while waiting for my train home. Jeffrey is nothing short of a miracle worker to have salvaged my ravaged hair and turn it into something that made me feel pretty after a very bad few months had me seriously down in the dumps. I am moving my review of Jeff over from where I originally wrote it under Self Salon, since he is no longer there. I still visit him constantly - getting trims, more volume, fixing my face framing layers. I've gotta remember to check into Yelp while I am there. I have referred 3 other fellow curlies to him, and they all rave about him as well. He ah-mazing! Here is my original review from 3/13: I really thought I left a review for this place last year, but better late than never, I guess. I visited again today and saw Jeff for the second time. He is known as the "curl whisperer" on naturallycurly.com, and since the very first time I saw him I know why. He is so friendly, down to earth, and most importantly - knowledgeable! The very first time I saw Jeff in 8/12, it was because I was a dumb ass, who used a super hot blow dryer on my hair everyday. The result - hair that was bone straight in some places, ugh!!! He spent 2 hours with me dry cutting each individual curl. He educates you all along the way, suggest products, and shows you how to style it in the end. The final result was the best haircut I have ever had. I have movement, volume, my curl pattern is back. Seriously, strangers have complimented my hair, and that has never happened to me. The 2 hours fly by because he is such a sweetheart, and you talk to him the entire time. He is definitely my stylist for life. His prices are amazing for the job he does. This review is a long time coming! I have been a client of Jeffrey's for probably 10 years. He has cut my curly hair since I wore it long and through different lengths. Currently I have been wearing it in a short pixie style and I love it. I always wanted to wear my hair short but suffered through many bad haircuts. I trusted Jeffrey to give me the short cut I wanted. I have been wearing it like this now for a few years. Over the last 10 years or so, I've followed Jeff to three salons. He's just that good. In fact, when I left NYC for a couple years and couldn't find a decent wavy hair stylist in my new city, I would book my flights for NYC quarterly visits based on Jeff's schedule. He understands the science of hair and cuts with that knowledge. My summer cuts are slightly different than my winter cuts because my hair changes with the weather. He works with my hair and not against it. But his corrective cutting techniques are also spot on. If the cowl lick in my bangs is misbehaving, he knows what to do. He's taught me how to care for my waves with super easy home maintenance which is only doable because the quality of his cuts is so high. Not a week goes by that a stranger doesn't compliment my hair. I never take credit. It's all due to my parents' genes and Jeff's skills. I adore the Devachan stylist I see but she's been out of commission for a long while and the situation became desperate when my husband told me I was starting to look like the Jewish first cousin of Zoot, the saxophonist from the Muppet Show (which is unarguably a great look but just not what I thought I was going for). I promptly did my research via forums and Yelp and found that this guy Jeffrey from Beehive and then Self Salon was repeatedly referred to as the "curl whisperer" and that he is to a bad hair day what Arthur Kegel was to incontinence. He's also a Devachan certified stylist and his rate is incredibly reasonable given how gifted he is and how generous he is with his time ($85 for a cut). I had a f*ck of time tracking this genius down as he recently hung out a shingle in the East Village, but I am so glad I finally did. Babbling aside, I LOVE the cut he gave me. He obviously listened very attentively when I told him what I wanted and he read my gist perfectly because this haircut is everything I could ask for. At the risk of seeming like I'm aping Revlon ad copy, I need to say that I can't believe how attractive I feel. This haircut is a liberation from the collective mire of my self-doubt and my chi flat iron; there's a direct correlation between how often I press my hair and how poorly cultivated my curls are and I haven't had to strain out my cultural identity via ironing since visiting Jeff. I have an angular face and he softened me slightly, made me look less enraged, less ax-murderish. People let me hold their babies now. I let him know that I can't be bothered with a long styling ritual because I'm a filthy manson-family-type hippie and I'm happy to say that this haircut takes me less than two minutes to cultivate. He's also extremely interesting, smart, kind, cosmic, and funny so you'll likely have a great time in the chair while he rescues your hair situation . Finally, I didn't just dig the cut upon leaving the salon, the cut has held up really beautifully, my face and the cut are of a piece (and a peace). Jeff's just a brilliant artist and scientist. My first cut with jeff was in self salon and I was going to follow him to ruby 6 where he is now. I made an appointment with him online and never got a confirmation email and on my profile there were no upcoming reservations with him. I then made a different appointment the following sunday. A couple days later I was hit with such a rude and self righteous email from him! Saying that I no called no showed and that I need to learn respect and that he does not want to work with me and he cancelled my appointment. "And now you have the audacity to rebook, still without an apology or explanation. Who does that!?!" "I just hope that you learn from this and show them some respect". Now, The last time I checked respect works two ways and If he was truly worried about my well being (as he claimed in the email) he would have tried to contact me to see why I was not there. Had he done that he would have known I wasn't aware that my attempt to make an appointment with him did go through. After I emailed him back and explained politely, he didn't even apologize! First, let me say I almost have a panic attack before I go to a new hairstylist. The last one I went to used a razor and it had disastrous results. It has taken me over a year to get another cut and I got extensions in the meantime. I have curly hair and Jeff was recommended by someone I trust. He was AMAZING! Not only has he given me the best haircut of my entire life, but the education alone was worth the price of the cut. I was using all the wrong products and my hair was frizzy. I truly do not like writing negative reviews and rarely do, but I have been stewing over my experience with Jeffrey for a long time and would like to help someone avoid my experience. My cut was ok, but I would HIGHLY recommend looking elsewhere for color. I went in for a color change from jet black to natural dark brown and ended up with multicolored hair. I appreciate the fact that he saw me for a second time in an attempt to rectify the problem, but unfortunately after the second visit I ended up with the EXACT same hair color that I originally went in with. I contacted him for the second time to let him know the situation and politely and respectfully ask for my money back and was met with radio silence. Tons of money down the drain and an absolutely useless double-process chemical treatment to my already delicate hair. AVOID. read more

I went to Jeff for my haircuts for the three years that I lived in NYC, I just moved away and not being able to find a good hairstylist where I am now prompted me to review him! He did GREAT work with my very curly hair. He really understood how to work with it and took the time to get it right. I think I have found my hair's life companion in Jeffrey! I found him when I spotted another curly girl with an awesome cut and asked her who does her hair. So glad I did! He is a curl whisperer and gave my curls the love and attention they so needed. His care and attention to detail are evident days later as I am loving the way my cut falls and my curls pop and feel. Earlier this week I got a cut from Jeffrey and he is absolutely fantastic. Price was reasonable ($85 for a first time cut). Location: Ruby 6 Super cut, super cozy, in East Village. Apparently all of the hairdressers there are independents. I got a good vibe and there were candles and couches. I was comfortable, Jeffrey gave me water in a MUG instead of a plastic cup. The ambiance overall was 5/5, couldn't have been better. Also, there's a coffee shop (the Bean) two blocks over that is super great as well. YOU HAVE TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT ONLINE. Google "jeffrey boyes @ ruby 6" and the site will come up! Service: Jeffrey Amazing, interesting guy. Important to note that he is a CURL specialist. And by curl, I mean all kinds. I've got Afro-Spanish curls, before my cut he cut a Cambodian girl's curls. He can handle it all. Anyways, I was really nervous because I hadn't cut my hair in over a year and had gone all natural in March. I had a ton of split ends, fried curls, etc. and thought he was going to be one of those hairdressers that scolds you for taking such bad care of your hair BUT HE WASN'T. He was super sweet, heard my transition story out with no judgement, and while he was cutting made enjoyable small talk, offered suggestions, answered all of my questions. He and his coworkers have a great dynamic so when he wasn't talking to me, I was cracking up, listening to their conversations. He uses the Shea Moisture line which is what I use at home and recommend which color of their product line I should use to be manage my hair. Cut: Bob The whole service took about 2 hours. I wanted a pixie but because of my hair type he suggested otherwise, but wasn't rude about it. He told me that a pixie would give me a spherical afro, which I didn't want. So he cut off the majority of the unhealthy hair and gave me a cut stylish bob. He cut dry, which he explained beforehand and spent a lot of time doing so. I was worried I would end up with a triangular shape but he took care of that! After the cut, came the rinse and reset. He massaged my head, put me under the hood, and then I was done! Only Con He used some kind of creamy product as a leave in that left my hair feeling a little sticky (even until the next day) but it's not that big of a deal. If you are a curly girl (or simply wavy-ish) you have to go to Jeff, I can't say enough good things. He not only does a detailed dry cut (the right kind for curly hair, not like all those hairdressers that cut your hair as if you are going to blowdry your hair stick straight every day), but he also educates all his clients about hair product ingredients and teaches them a special system for washing your hair so that you'll get the maximum out of your curls. I first heard about him because my friend's hair was suddenly looking AMAZING, and you couldn't help but comment. She has always had large, thick ringlets but now they were just so luscious and shiny, without a hint of frizz. She told me she had found this really cool hairdresser and couldn't stop raving, so I gave him a try. My hair isn't as far on the curly spectrum as her's - it's more wavy and tangly - but he is able to work with all textures and I loved the results and have been going to him ever since. Every time I have a fresh haircut I get so many people complimenting my hair and send MORE people his way, who come back very satisfied, getting their own compliments. I'm very sensitive about my hair because it's so unpredictable and I've always felt nervous when I go to a hairdresser since it's really hard to get my cut right, with the maximum amount of swingi-ness, volume, and layers for it to look good - and I never even know how to describe what I'm trying to get, so I just feel powerless! Sometimes a hairdresser will do a good job with one cut, and the next time I visit, something is off, so over the years I've just felt so frustrated and resigned that my hair will just choose when to look normal and other times be a complete disaster - c'est la vie, I guess! But now that I have started going to Jeff I feel so much more relaxed - no more trying out a million salons, hoping someone can get things right.
