While visiting my sister in Longview, Texas we decided to drive up to Jefferson, Texas and walk around at the stores. One place we visited was the Jefferson General Store and I am glad we did. This hardware/general store has been in business since 1870s and still has a fully stocked soda fountain. Inside you'll find old school candy, unique souvenirs, toys, & more. You can even pick up homemade honey butter, jams, jellies, pickled veggies, salsa & relishes, which can also be ordered online. My darling Southern Sister brought me back some of their Texas Pecan Pralines, which are made in house daily. Not gonna lie, I'm biased about Pralines and am loyal to Louisiana style. Oh boy, my opinion changed when I tried these. They were soft, creamy, & absolutely delightful. They also weren't overly sweet. This general store, located in the heart of Jefferson City, is a true throwback in time to the 1930s. The decor is authentic and transports you back in time when life was simple and one central store served almost all your needs. Today, the store is mainly for tourists but that is fine. There are so many things to choose from, starting with assorted candies and prepared condiments, to t-shirts and other clothes, to toys for kids. There is even an old time ice cream counter. Step back in time when you enter this old store! The walls are covered from floor to ceiling with all kinds of memorabilia, old signs and vintage items like an old antique store. The old style display cases are chock full of things to tempt you from candy to games and funny items. There are so many things here you will have a hard time not finding something to buy! The store, while very well stocked is neat and clean. There are several rooms, the main room and 3 smaller rooms in the back and all full of things to look at. There is an old time ice cream bar with vintage barstools and serving Blue Bell ice cream. There is an old pick up truck out front, probably from the early 50's which makes the store easy to find. We ended up buying several things, some funny signs to hang on our patio by the pool and some classic old style candy like they used to sell in general stores from long ago. Not really what I was expecting- not much "general" in the general store. Mostly a giant candy store, with some pretty cool nostalgic candies, and an old time soda fountain. Which is also kinda cool, but still not much more than that. About those Moody Dogs. A pretty good chili dog, but I am not sure how it got "famous." It's just a chili dog. If you have a love affair with chili dogs like my wife does, well then you should get one. For me, it's just another chili dog (kept warm in a crock pot :(. But hey, the the antique stores and other cool places in town are worth a visit. Oh, and a good ol' fashioned Neapolitan Coconut Slice is also worth it :) read more

All I can say is OMG! When I was a kid, Woolworth's five and dime store was downtown. I loved going there. So much stuff! Well, this place is even crazier! It is a monstrous candy store, with a WHOLE bunch of other stuff! I was the proverbial kid in a candy store! It takes a while to see everything, and we saw it all. We even had some 5 cent coffee. I'm not sure how long this store had been around, or how many proprietor's it's had. Never the less, it's a very old building and the paint is faded and peeling on the store front. The wood floors are original and patched with car license plates in a couple of areas, but add to the charisma of the place. They have an old time soda and Ice Cream fountain. They have a little old everything in this place, cups, shot glasses, t-shirts, hats, purses, seasonings, toys, games, and the list goes on! We ate here some time ago. We have each come here separate over the years with our families but not to eat chili dogs or frito pie. The atmosphere is what makes this place totally. The Moody Dog is a chili dog not unlike most others and the frito pie is a nice touch by serving it in the Frito bag....but still Frito pie. These were both good but when eaten with the surrounding General Store feel, it is neat. The drink selection is awesome and who knows how many old fashioned bottle type drinks they have. They have a ton of old candy and the serve Blue Bell Ice Cream and shakes and malts and pralines and all kinds of things.. Almost too much to look at here. It is a cool place. read more

This store is solely for the purpose of novelty and tourism, but it personifies classic Americana and vintage nostalgia. It's so charming and authentic, you have to stop in for the experience. This place was really cool. My Dad tried explaining it to me before taking me there, but fell short in doing so. Hopefully my review sheds a better light on the establishment than his description did for me. Imagine having the ability of revisiting your childhood and finding some of the things you cherished, but haven't thought about since. Jefferson Texas General Store is where you're bound to find those items. Reproduction tin signs and lunch boxes. More candy than your dentist would like you to be able to browse. Candy cigars and cigarettes. Wax pop bottles. Freshen-up gum. You get the picture, right? If you're in the market for a gag gift, you'll find fake poop, whoopee cushions, everything bacon-oriented from band-aids to gum to lip balm. It was a lot of fun to browse through these items. Various tourist-type stuff is available too (Ts, coffee mugs, cook books, etc.). Need any jams, salsas, pickled products? They've got you covered! If you're hungry, they've food items and ice cream available. I'm sure I'm missing important. What I'm trying to communicate is that this place offers something for everyone. This is a real gem in a gem of a town. They have a little bit of everything. Aprons, cook books, sauces, toys, t-shirts, biker stuff, Minnetonka moccasins, spangly belts, cool cups with their logos, old fashioned candy, a soda fountain!! Wow!!! You can literally spend hours looking at everything. Mom and I hit this as our last stop and I'm sorry that was the case. I wish we had come here first. Antiques are not on the menu for this store, but for gifts and goodies, this is a great stop. As it was 107 degrees today (no exaggeration there), we had some icecream. Mom had the black cow and loved it. I had a simple scoop in a cup. Both really hit the spot. If you come into Jefferson, you must find this place and at least get a Coke or Dr. Pepper in a cold glass bottle. Heaven. Look for the beautiful turquoise colored old truck out front. I often tell people I don't have regrets, but now I do. I did not buy a box of pralines to take home. Their pralines are unbelievable-- butter and maple sugar and nuts melting on your tongue. Why, why, why didn't I buy the pralines? It's because my husband was already paying for the other things when I saw you could buy an entire box to take home, and I didn't want to make him stand in line again. This is a fun store to browse through while in Jefferson. Besides lots of Texas memorabilia, they have things like: Absinthe gumballs. Lots of things with sassy sayings on them. Millions of jars of jelly or salsa. Moccassins They also have a soda fountain. I wanted sorely to buy a pink cowboy hat with a tiara on it, but they were sold out. I did notice I can buy pralines online so I will have to do that. I did buy a leather bracelet, an armadillo belt buckle (a metal one, not a real one) and a stuffed armadillo (a toy, again, not a real one) as souvenirs for my kiddos. read more

We moved here a few weeks ago and got an office in Jefferson. We intend to try everything in town at some point. This one is for the recent General Store trips. Moody dogs. Moody dogs. So good I had to say it twice! I can't say I understand the "without" dog option, since the wiener is integral. If I were in a hot dog eating contest, I would want these. Of course I would not win versus the stripped down dogs they use in competition, but it would not matter. I would be eating all I could handle in Moody dogs and that is a big win. Well, they are an almost thing of the past. You'll seldom see a shop set up in this fashion any longer... Upon entering this store located in an original, old building; everything is attractive and pleasant. The employees are friendly, helpful and busy keeping their customers happy! The items in this store are absolutely geared for every member in your family or group...fancy flavored jellies, salsas, nicer beauty and bath care products, quality toys, puzzles, kitchen decor, clothing (think Texas souveniers) and way too much to mention in between! It's a great place to visit and you should be prepared to spend money; it's impossible to say you can't find at least an armload of goodies. The floor appears to be the original hardwood floor; I love the sound and feel of hardwood; I degress... Make sure you pick up some Pralines. They are made in store and are delicious. The General Store has lots of jams, sauces, pickled items etc. They have jars open for sampling. That was probably a bad thing, because I didn't like anything I tasted. If there were no samples, we probably would picked up a couple of jars. The General Store had lots of old time games, magic tricks, wooden gliders,etc. Also carried lots of hats...cowboy/cowgirl, straw sun hats, baseball hats. It is 105 F out there! Hot I tell you! And I am walking the streets of Jefferson looking at antiques, historical sites, and visiting some of the local businesses. So after the 3rd time seeing the sign outside this business that declares they serve ice cream, I decide it's time to cool off! It's a cute little store with lots of gift ideas and t-shirts. They also have a lot of specialty sauces to bring home and candy. But lets face it, we are here for ice cream, some shakes, and anything else we can cool off with! They have a decent selection of ice cream with seating at small tables as well as at the bar. And even if you don't like ice cream it's a great place to stop. read more

What a great country store in a cute, historic downtown area. I had been to this store over 15 years ago and remember how great it was back then. Sooo many candies and trinkets from back "way back when". We purchased some of their homemade pickles, but neither my daughter nor I liked them, which is a shame because we absolutely love pickles. The pickling spice was a bit spicy and sour and not in a good way. Also tasted the sample of their green chili salsa and the sample tasted really good, so I bought a jar. The jar I bought, however, did not taste like the sample, so that was a let down - threw it away. I would definitely come back but I don't think I'll be purchasing their specialty food items. read more

This is a very unique general store. Lots of unusual merchandise and very value priced. Their special is the Moody hot dog I highly encourage you to try these.
