Shout out to Capital Tax Service for helping us tackle our business and personal tax returns…read more Consulting with Sandra was great, she provided a lot of information regarding starting a business and guided us in the right direction. Michael really stepped up in preparing our business and personal tax returns. He took the time to explain the different areas of our return to where we can understand all those numbers. Will continue to do business with them, and I advise that everyone should too.

Horrible experience using Capital Tax Service to complete my 2022 tax return. Details below but in…read moresummary: * Sloppy work with many mistakes on their part from confusing me for a different John and sending outdated intake forms to having 2 major errors (that I discovered) on the tax return once it was finally completed. * Awful communication, I had to reach out each time to get any information. * Poor planning and communication on their part which required an extension to be filed the day taxes were due. My wife and I were very disappointed with our experience using Capital Tax Service. This was a shock because of the numerous great reviews online, however what happened for us was far from that. Starting out, we reached out to schedule a free phone consult. We were sent an email to set it up and Sandra replied saying that our free half hour consult had been used up. Future consults are $150 per hour with a minimum $150 fee paid at the beginning of the consult. She said, this situation had become increasingly complicated therefore additional tax research will be required. We had not had our consult yet, so we were confused and asked her to clarify. Sandra apologized as she confused me with another person. First red flag! We took this as an honest mistake and decided to move forward. Looking back, that was the kind of attention to detail (or lack thereof) we could expect from the entire experience. The next issue was we were sent old forms labeled 2021. I let Colleen know and she apologized saying the 2022 forms were still being finished. Sending incorrect forms was another example of their lack of attention to detail. After we sent in all of our tax documents on 3/18, we were not told they needed an additional info until 2.5 weeks later. We sent that over right away and then silence. We were not updated on the status of our taxes, and had to reach out ourselves as we were close to the filing deadline. We contacted Nikki on 4/12 and were told they would let us know when the documents were complete and ready to review. Then again... nothing. On 4/17 I reached out again because I hadn't heard anything and taxes were due the next day. This caused a lot of stress being so close to the deadline. We were then told that they were still working on our return and we would be followed up with tomorrow. On the day taxes were due, 4/18, we again heard nothing. At 2:51 pm I sent an email and by 4:50 pm there was no response. I then called to speak with Sandra. She told me Nikki was working on our case, but was too complicated, so handed it back to Sandra. I was never made aware of this. She told me I'd have to file an extension. On 4/27 after no update, once again, I reached out and was told there was another form they needed me to complete. On 5/2, I received an email that my tax return was complete and ready for my review. First, this return never included my extension payment as Sandra forgot to communicate that to Nikki (so it was never handed over to Sandra, it was back to Nikki again?). I reviewed everything that night and found 2 major errors; incorrect child tax credit (they only listed a $500 credit when it was supposed to be $2,000) and an issue on my business return where my cost of goods was incorrectly added as gross income. On 5/3, I emailed them regarding the 2 issues that I found. They responded later that day apologizing for the mistakes and then sent me a new completed tax return. The result of these mistakes changed my tax burden by about $2,000, and I was the one to find them! Not only was this an awful experience, full of poor communication, delays, and mistakes but they ended up charging me 40% over the initial estimate to complete my taxes. Because of this experience, my wife and I would not recommend Capital Tax Service.

Smart Vault is where they store all your past tax documents, which comes in handy if it's ever needed. This year, I decided to explore the other options and utilized the SmartVault option, so all I had to do was upload all my documents and just wait until Joe get a chance to process it. Joe called me with additional questions. After all said and done, he sent me notification that it's ready to file, and all I had to do was reviewed, signed, scanned, and upload to SmartVault for filing. We came to Kathleen Trumbauer in the early '90s, after a number of years with people who we later…read morelearned were incompetent and who made countless errors on our returns. Kathleen efficiently sorted through the mess, helped us re-file a number of returns, and took over our annual tax preparation. For almost two decades, our returns were relatively complex, involving multi-family real properties, investment accounts and several more complex forms of investment. Kathleen managed all of this with ease and kept us well informed about her process. Her work regularly saved us considerable sums, as she was always up-to-date on the latest wrinkles in tax law. Her fees were reasonable to start with, and, over the past two years' returns, as our tax picture became less complex (we'd unwound many of our more complicated investments) she reduced them still further. We now live quite a ways from Seattle - and have for 8 years. Until now, we had remained with Kathleen because we appreciate her services. This year, we finally cut the cord, after finding an excellent practitioner not 3 miles away from us in our small town. While we *could* have handled all our reports, forms and such remotely, we preferred to have at least one or two review meetings and it's just become way too difficult to drive into Seattle! We were sad to go, and hope that our new person will offer us the same level of professional, personal, money-saving service that Kathleen did.

It was a LOT of complex and complicated work, and Kathleen dove in and straightened it all out wonderfully. Her fees were reasonable compared to doing the same kind of tax work with other CPAs and even H&R Block (who will charge you out the *** if you aren't a simple 1099), especially considering everything I asked of her. She really helped me out of the disaster my old employer made out of my taxes. She was a total pro the whole time, and I really appreciated all her hard work. Fast forward a decade and I was in desperate need of copies of some old taxes she had done because my records got lost and I needed them very badly. Kathleen went above and beyond to dig through old records, old computer files and databases, old backups, you name it! She was able to retrieve some very important information for me that I really needed to have and could not find anywhere else - not even from the IRS! She did all this for a former client with no question and was really kind about it! I was just absolutely floored by how much trouble she went to in order to help me out, especially as I had not been a client for years because I moved out of state. If I was still in Washington, I would definitely still be going to see Kathleen! And yes, I am a real customer, and this is my real experience. Thank you Kathleen!

The second year for the same amount of billable hours they increased their tax prep fee 145%, which was very concerning for us. We asked for a review and that they would please find a way to lessen the fee. Their response was basically "no", " Your increased fee is not due to increased billable hours; it is due to correctly charging for the hours incurred by our firm". Also, after filing an extension for us, we had our information to them by early June and it took until early September for them to prepare our taxes. We checked in with them multiple times to check in on the progress of our return. We would not recommend them based on the price and their lack of expediency.
