I dropped by this cozy boxing gym on a rainy Friday morning while visiting family in Honolulu and was blown away by this place. From the moment I walked through the door, everyone was warm and welcoming-- no egos here, thank goodness! The space is well appointed, with a variety of heavy bags, including the wrecking ball ones, speeds bags, and a weight training area. Looks like they may have gloves for use too, but I brought my own and didn't inquire. Coach Mike started us out with some warm up and stretching, a little jogging and shadow boxing. The bulk of class was focused on partnered drills, mixing slips and rolls into the combinations which was EXCELLENT. This was the type of class I was hoping for! I learned quite a bit, and am thankful it never felt too advanced for me. (I took my first class back home at McConnell's Boxing Academy in Portland only six months ago.) I'll be taking some of these drills home to continue practicing. Class ended with a circuit of conditioning drills and mitt work with Coach Mike. All in all, excellent experience, and I'll definitely be going back!

I was actually driving…read morenear the auto parts store and I noticed this garage that had a giant boxing ring in the back and a lot of different types of punching bags. Curious, I stepped inside and saw two guys in the ring with headgear sparring with each other. I also saw above me on the walls these giant pictures of all the fighters the gym trained. I was greeted by Coach Phil who looked a bit intimidating at first, but was very nice guy. He talked about how most people don't even know there's a boxing gym in Aiea, but said they were legitamate none the less. Going on to say that unlike other gyms boxing gyms where guys would have ego and start beef, BoxFit is about respect and honing your skills in order to get better. Whether you're an absolute beginner or an experienced competitor, Coach Phil said we're all learning new things everyday at our own pace. He said if I'm curious, come to a class (first one's free). If I like it, I can join. If not, no sweat. So I came the following Tuesday evening. Coah Phil said he normally swings by the gym during late evenings around 8pm so I would be trained by Coach Jazelle. I recognized her from one of the fighters pictured up on the walls. Like Coach Phil, I was also bit intimidated by her at first but eventually I learned she was also nice. Before the class started, she taught me the basic punches like the jab, stright, hook and uppercut. She said I need to remember those punches. I also noticed that the age of the participants were quite varied. Some looked to be in grade school, some looked to be only a few years younger than me and there were also a few who looked to be older than me. It was a really diverse group of students. So during the beginning of the class, Coach Jaz told us to get in our stance with our hands up. She called out certain punches by their assigned number and we were to perform those punches. At times she would demonstrate the correct form for those punches and tell us to do them again. We would do this for about 10 minutes. Next we would follow a certain curriculum that's written on a dry-erase board. They would be activities like performing combinations on a heavy bag, practice punch timing on the speed bad or the double-end bag, running, box jumping and many other exercies. We would spend about 3 minutes per station. Even though it was only a 45 minute class, it feels like a full body workout. Of course I decided to join the gym, but there are different tiers for the membership. You pay to either go once a week, twice a week or an unlimited number of times per week. How this works is let's say you sign up for the once per week membership and you go to the morning class on Tuesday. After that you feel like you have enough energy to join the evening Tuesday class. You can do that. Once a week meaning you can train all you want for one day out of the week and you can do all the classes or free training on your chosen day. With other gyms like 24 Hour Fitness and UFC gym, they can cost an arm and a leg while also feel quite boring. With BoxFit, the initiation fee is a lot less and I actually feel motivated to go to this gym. I'm never bored there. I want to learn to punch faster, slip punches, increase my stamina and my agility. Also if you want to box competitavely, they do that there as well. You would just need to talk to the coaches. Everyone has their own skill level and their own pace so don't feel frustrated. The coaches will help you. For anybody who wants to try something new and get active, I would highly recommend checking this place out. You can sit on a foldable chair and observe the classes to see if they're right for you.

I've been boxing, doing muay thai, Jiu Jitsu and other forms of combat for over 20 years, and at this point they're all kind of "ways of life" for me, so when I find a good gym I tend to hold onto it. 808 is a great boxing gym -- they have different group sessions, based on your skill level and what you want to do, and they have lots of different times throughout the week so it's not too hard to fit into your schedule (they also do one-on-one training too). I like the group sparring sessions because you get a chance to spar with people of many different skill levels, which is great for honing in on different skill sets (e.g., if you're an expert, sparring against someone who's more new, you can hold back and maybe just practice dodging, etc.). It's more affordable than other boxing gyms I've been to, especially considering that we're in Hawaii. Definitely gonna be back again.

A few months ago, an employee named Juan signed my son up for a membership over the phone. I never signed a written contract, and the cancellation policy was never explained to me. My son is leaving for military basic training on June 1st. We tried to do the right thing and cancel the membership well in advance (starting on May 7th). Despite explaining that he is leaving for the military (with orders), the front desk refused to help and said the cancellation would be "pending" until June 16th, meaning they intend to force me to pay for a full month of June while my son is away at basic training. I have reached out to the manager, Tiffany Ahnee, multiple times via email to get this resolved professionally. She has completely ignored every single email. I have attached screenshots to this review showing my original text conversations with Juan (who no longer works there) proving how the account was set up, as well as my multiple unanswered emails to Tiffany. It is shameful that a gym with the UFC brand name would treat future service members this way and trap them in billing cycles for verbal, over-the-phone agreements. Do not sign up here unless you are prepared to be ignored by management when you need to cancel.

She's a beautiful soul--quiet, shy, and loving--but has faced her share of challenges, from bullying to social anxieties. We've tried other gyms in the past, but they never felt right for her. She'd always come to me saying, 'Daddy, I don't feel comfortable at these places.' And as a parent, you listen, right? What drew me to Figueroa Boxing Gym were their core values--anti-bullying and confidence building. I spoke with the gym mom first, and let me tell you, she made us feel welcomed from the get-go. She listened to our struggles and assured us that Figueroa was different. And she was absolutely right. My daughter has been to Figueroa twice now, and I've never seen her this excited about a gym. She's made friends and absolutely adores her trainer, Journey, who happens to be a remarkable young woman. The environment is so welcoming that my daughter can't stop talking about it and looks forward to every session. What more can a father ask for? My daughter is breaking out of her shell, learning valuable life skills, and staying fit--all under the guidance of individuals who embody good moral values and the true Aloha spirit. I want my daughter to learn self-defense and stay fit, but it's equally important that she doesn't become what she's fought against--a bully. Figueroa ensures that she's growing in the right direction, both physically and morally. If you're looking for a gym where your keiki can grow in a nurturing, community-focused setting, don't hesitate to check out Figueroa Boxing Gym. It's a true diamond in the rough that deserves all the recognition it can get. My daughter is happier, more confident, and most importantly, she's found a place where she belongs. And if it's good for her, it's good for me. Thank you for reading my review.
