I made the short drive out here and fell in line where they took my order and I got a pound of carnitas and a pound of bistec all for about $20! This place has the REAL tacos, as they always were and as they should be. If you don't want hot spice, get the chicken carnitas. Flavorful and juicy but easy on the tongue for kids. The bean and cheese are excellent, too. The napolitos and beef fajitas have a kick! The flavor is fantastic. J.D's Market has a very good selection of meats and a cool little taqeria as well. Every time I feel like authentic mexican style street tacos, I come to J.D's for their marinated skirt steak, chicken, and Pastor. I order a pound of each of the perfectly seasoned meats, and go home and start grillin! They also have fresh vegetables, salsa, and tortillas if you need those as well. I have also tried the street tacos and tortas they serve in the taqeria as well. They are delicious! You probably are going to have to bust out some of your best Spanglish to order though. You have to be looking for J.D.'s to find it. You wouldn't think this place would be located in a gas station. It tricked me the first time. read more

KLawt, this place was a damn good pit stop before work today!! Packed, is an understatement. The 11:45am lunch rush is no joke, so go before or after, or be prepared to wait. The good news is that your food comes hot, fresh and cooked to order. Almost all pastries were .79 each. The churros are the best I've ever had, but def the best in the box of goodies I brought hm today. It's stocked w all the Spanish cooking flare and spices you need!! Food amount is huge. They have really good tacos and mexican food at this tiny little kitchen in the back of a Texaco gas station convenience mart. I like the pork and steak tacos, and they have daily specials like enchiladas that come with rice, beans, avocado, salad, etc. They also have bowls of fresh salsa and (grilled?) jalapeno peppers out on the table. We lived in the Brookfield neighborhood when this was being built and groaned about it... but quickly became fans of theirs. It was great having somewhere so close to go grab milk, soda, bread or even veggies in a pinch. Their Hispanic food selection is much larger than HEB's so we could find some Salvadoran products like loroco and mangos verdes (in jars), Maggi seasoning, etc. Their pan dulce selection is pretty good too.So much so that we still head over there on occasion even through we live 10-15 minutes away. read more

We use to stop by here quite a bit when they first opened. However it seems to be going down hill fast. The place is always dirty, smells like spoiled meat (and by the looks of the meat, it probably is) and very unfriendly staff. If you don't speak Spanish be ready to see a lot of arguing of who is going to take your order. The people at the cash register must hate their jobs as well because they won't hardly acknowledge you but will ring you up quickly and toss your recipt at you. It is sad because our area needed a GOOD market but nope just another meat market owned by a guy who isn't Hispanic or even local! Oh and their gas prices are a bate and switch. They advertise a less price but the pump rings you up somethi g different. When yoou confront them, they say..."that's the cash price." WTF read more

Stopped and got some tacos for a quick dinner... Barbacoa and deshebrada tacos were average, if not slightly below. The carnitas was pretty tasty though which bumped my rating up to a third star. The savior and granted of the fourth star was from the green chicken tamales. They were the second best I've had in Austin only behind homemade tamales. Very good and worth the money. Overall, the price isn't terrible and some of the food is worth the stop. They also have many deserts that I didn't try but looked good. read more

This is a great little Mexican market to stop at. They have a meat market and a small produce section. There is a little taqueria inside with a couple of tables. You can get 3 decent size breakfast tacos for $2.99. They have lunch/dinner items but they close up their taqueria early. Oh, and I would be remiss not to mention they make their own bakery items right there in the store. It's amazing to watch how much food they can crank out of their little kitchen area. read more

Been here couple times to grab a Milanesa Torta to go. Must say they are pretty good. The 1st one I had was better than the second, but still good. Being from Chicago we never would consider getting food from a gas station restaurant unless we were road tripping and everything was closed. I am SO HAPPY that I listened to a friend and went here for tacos!! OMG!!! So good, tons of flavor and I've had good Mexican food in Chicago. Totally recommend this place. "Hamburguers", really? I mentioned it to the lady at the register some time ago and she just shrugged her shoulders. Racists employees who treat non Hispanic customers like garbage. On several occasions I have been in line ahead of Hispanic customers and have had tbe clerk look past me and take care of them first. Also I have tried dozens of times to get tacos and been ignored. The last time the person working behind the counter just walked away while I was in the middle of my other and never came back. We LOVE this place! We've been coming here for a little over a year for our Saturday morning barbacoa by the pound, carnitas by the pound, fresh corn tortilla fix. What is prompting me to write this review is the pastor I purchased from the meat market section. (Where you buy raw meat to cook at home to make you feel like you can cook things you really can't.) All I can say is YES!! This is it! We've tried the pastor from several different carnicerias and they all seem to miss something. Some are too salty, some just taste weird. This pastor is PERFECT. You should go and buy some right now. You just cook up the meat in a little oil ( or non stick pan) until well cooked and lightly toasted. Serve it in a warm corn tortilla with the Vaquita cheese, cilantro, onion and lime...and you'll be dreaming it about it later. Yummy! read more

JD'S has been one of my favorite taco places since they opened. Add in convenient gasoline, a large selection of groceries, tasty baked goods, fresh fruits and vegetables, and it's no wonder that JD'S is a place I'm at several times a month. There's can be 2little bit of a language barrier sometimes if you don't speak Spanish, but don't let it scare you. My favorite are the pastor tacos (although the steak tacos are great, too) on flour tortillas, with cilantro and raw onion. Grab a cold Mexican Coca-Cola to complete your meal. read more

In reference to the new location on Decker and Loyola: I do not know about the grocery items or the check-out service in this store proper; I do know about the horrible, absolutely garbage cafeteria service overall! The food is good, and that's the sad part: today is the second time I patronized this location for lunch; I ordered a cheeseburger, while the woman in front of me ordered 5! The last time I came here to eat, just 2 of those meals took 20-minutes--and the cooks took their sweet time preparing the food. Today, I waited over 30-minutes for my order, only to find that they DID NOT EVEN PREPARE MY FOOD! One of the cooks eventually approached the counter, only after someone noticed that all of the other customers (none of whom were black) were receiving their orders on time and moving right along; she had the nerve to ask me if I were waiting for an order!? I responded that I have been here more than half an hour, wasn't bothering the staff, wasn't glaring at them, didn't disappear somewhere else; I submitted an order, someone took that order, and then did nothing with it. There should be a limit for quantity on orders if it takes so long, or they should hire more damn cooks! If I had spoken up more assertively, I'd be the "angry black man", making customers and staff uncomfortable and nervous; but if I stand patiently and wait for my order, someone MIGHT deign to inquire whether or not I need help. That is bull$h!t. I am NOT going to visit this location again, for any reason whatsoever--neither will I recommend it to anyone else. I was insulted for being treated so invisibly and having my time wasted. JD's deserves no stars, as far as I'm concerned. The food service here is complete garbage. Unacceptable! read more
