Pretty awesome place! I love how hipster this place is. Being located right in gastown, with a classic barbershop pinwheel thing outside (you know what I'm saying) you can't miss it, it's so classic. The people are friendly, and they are complete bros in here. I got a trim a couple weeks ago from a bro but it was quite expensive. I just got a full haircut here for $36 (after a $5 student discount which they offer on Thursdays).. My trim was $30. My haircut was done by Sabrina, and she was pleasant, fun to talk to, and it was easy to tell her what I wanted done. I showed her a couple of pictures, we talked for maybe a minute and she knew exactly what I wanted and she did a great job with it !! My hair was way too long and badly needed a cut, and Sabrina possibly just gave me my favourite haircut ever today. I will see how it grows out.. But I am loving the style and the different styles I can do with it ! Thanks JD, and I will be back next time I need a haircut. Sadly I'm an actor and don't get to choose my hairstyle often and actually get free haircuts when I work haha but when I do need a personal cut I'll be coming back! First off, overpriced. $65 for a haircut and beard trim is way out of whack compared to the surrounding area. My haircut was uncomfortable. The barber went backwards and forewords on the buzzer at such speed to have me cringing in discomfort. I've never experienced anything like it. When I pointed out that some hair on the top was noticeably longer than the rest, he said that it was fine and didn't offer to fix it. My beard trim was even worse. The beard is two different lengths on each side, and the neck line is way out of whack. Stay away from this place. read more

Great barber shop. From the moment I walked inside the playlist set the right mood. Everyone was relaxed with just the right levels of attitude and comfort. The woman at the front desk made casual conversation, but because she wanted to and not because she was required to. My barber (I'm upset that I can't remember his name but he recently moved to Vancouver a month ago) took his time to make sure I got what I wanted. Walked out looking good and confident. You can tell a lot from someone's work station and how they present themselves. This was a hot mess! I knew this wasn't going to play out well. This was my first time here. It's always hard finding a new barber, especially when you're new to the city. Let's just say, this won't be my go to in Vancouver. I don't recall my barbers name, he was Eastern European. The haircut was ok, it was rushed and the barber didn't pay attention to detail. The edges weren't lined up and it just felt like they are really under pressure to get the client done within 30minutes. They don't shampoo your hair or finish you off with a hot towel. He rushed me out of the seat before he could even show me the back with the mirror. At one point I thought maybe he was cutting his phones hair because it was getting more attention than me. I wouldn't say the staff were friendly, they came across as stand offish. I think the dog was more friendly, and he bit one of the clients! They have their own line of products, I was surprised they don't promote this more. One barber was recommending other products to his client and my barber used an alternative brand, when one of their products was next to it. The Shortest Cuts are the Cruelest I had been meaning to visit JD's (Gastown) for a straight-blade shave for over two years. All joking aside, thank god I started with a haircut! Seriously. I work in the area so its location is convenient. I don't want to get into all the inappropriate comments by the guy (there were many) but the entire haircut lasted about 3 minutes - I spent half that waiting for the guy to finish a zombie video game. I'm a regular at the Barbershop on Burrard and will undoubtedly run across town in the future. The JD experience was seriously disappointing and I'm guessing their client retention rate is non-existent. But don't take my advice - go there once to see for yourself and then head over to Burrard and Davie to get real barbershop service. read more

Went to these guys on the recommendation of a friend after my normal barber (who I've been using for 5+ years without missing an appointment) bailed on me without warning, a day before I was scheduled to leave for my wedding in the Dominican Republic earlier this month. Thankfully I had been discussing barbershops (as unlikely as that sounds) over dinner with some friends a few weeks prior, so I was aware of another barbershop in Gastown. After showing up ay my regular barber's place (with an appointment I had made two weeks earlier) only to find the place locked up and dark with a note on the door saying "on holiday for the week", I decided to hoof it on down to Abbott & Cordova in desperation. Thankfully I had the right cross-street and wandered into JD's, said hello to the staff and asked for a haircut. Without an appointment, I managed to sit down and get an excellent barber cut by Josh within 10 minutes of getting there. I didn't even have to feed the meter on my car as I made it back before my 48 minutes ran out. Whew. I'd just like to say thanks to Josh & JD's for saving my arse at the (nearly) last second, as showing up to my destination wedding 10 days later needing a massive haircut would have been troublesome, to say the least. Not to mention the beatdown I would have received from my new bride for not being properly groomed to... err.. be a groom. ;) Thus, from my limited experience, these guys do great work and the vibe and décor are pretty sweet, too. Not to mention they're open late (bonus!) and they actually do full-on styling for the ladies (err, and for you guys who are into it) if you so desire. Being a barbershop kinda guy, I found the combined approach worked out pretty well. In any case, I've got an appointment again there tomorrow. I'm a loyal guy, so I'll stick with 'em for the forseeable future in appreciation for them coming through in the clutch for me. Cheers! read more

It's been a couple weeks since I made this visit, but I feel I should really talk about my experience: Good: - Good atmosphere - It's clean - Multiple chairs so the waiting time really isn't all that long - Fast haircuts Bad: - Don't ever get a shave there. It's uncomfortable and I was thoroughly disappointed with the result... I have a hard time with hair. I am loyal in nature so it is difficult for me to switch stylists. My decision to go from surfer shag to mad men high and tight was a tough one. Mostly because my old stylists either could not or would not give me the cut I wanted. After many months of inner turmoil on how I would explain why I switched stylists to my old stylist if I ran into him on the street I decided to throw my loyalties aside and give my neighbourhood barber a shot. I knew I was in the right place as soon as I walked in. There were Vice magazines in the waiting area, Dr Dre was playing loudly to a crowd of stylish 20 somethings and honest hearty laughs were being exchanged between patron and clerk, an overall great vibe. My first visit I was served by a handsome moustachioed man named Garret (Anyone that knows me knows that I am a sucker for a handsome man with a moustache). Garret did a great job and I genuinely enjoyed my experience. I was Garret only for many months until I ran into Monet at the shop. Monet and I go way back (we are both from pg and we are both hard as @#&^) Garret and Monet are both magicians with the shears and all around lovely people. Thanks JD's! I just moved into the area and wanted to find a new barber (my usual one was at Metrotown, a little far to go for s cut). I got a few recommendations, but most were a little too expensive ($50+ for men's hair). I opted to try out this place and I'm sure glad I did! The atmosphere is unlike any barber shop I've ever been in. A definite Gastown vibe reverberates through the place through the decor and music. My barber is Jonny. He's fantastic and I couldn't recommend him enough. He listed to what I wanted, made a few recommendations based on style and how my hair grows, and then got right to work. He takes his time, going layer by later. Most haircuts I've had previously have taken about 15 minutes; at JD's I'm usually in the chair for 45. The pricing is really good too, a little more than half of what I would have paid at other barbershops around town. I wouldn't say cheap, I'd say inexpensive for the quality and time he puts in. A great combination of 'hipster-cool' and professionalism (didn't realize that was possible). Really satisfied with my cut and I've already been back twice. read more

I wasn't planning on sharing this, but apparently after 2 years of visiting this place, I am still not over this traumatizing experience and I think of that bad hairstylist over and over again. After putting my first post here, apparently the hair stylist saw my feedback. Someday when I was doing my groceries at the Nesters, he came at me in front of everyone and with his worst manners he said " Here is your 20 dollars, refund for your bad haircut". I didn't know what to do, so I said Its ok and I walked away. I thought of complaining about him to the managers, but I realized that there is no point of doing it. I have been to many hair salons in this town, and I have to admit, that hairstylist is the reason why I am afraid of trying new salons at the moment. Hopefully they already hired better mannered people and became a very satisfactory place for the customers at this point. read more

It's been over a year now since I've been visiting JD's Barber Shop. That's about nine or ten cuts, I go every four weeks. In that time frame, I've only been unhappy with one cut here, and hey that was my fault for saying I wanted the wrong trim length. The cuts are good and quick, I've had one from pretty much everyone there (see you later to the French dude who is leaving, his cuts are great) and the gents there are all pretty nice. It's a barbershop though. I've heard some jokes and language there that I wouldn't want my kids around, but really, there are no children there and at the end of the day it's a bunch of like-minded guys talking about what guys talk about. If you're not cool with that, maybe a barbershop (as hip as this one is) isn't your scene. I like their cuts, the shaves are good, and like The Elbow Room, sometimes things get said but we're all grown ups here. read more

I've been going to him for about a year and he's the only guy I'll go to now. The place itself is great too. Great music, atmosphere, and with Harvey, you get a window seat. I've had to get my haircut here a few times now, all of which were times that JD's was my last resort. My most recent experience which took place on a stat, i checked my other preferred spots (The Belmont, Kitsilano Barbers, the barbershop on burrard) but all were closed so i decided to go for it and cut a very simple buzzcut at JD's. They were able to take me right away which was nice, and my entire cut took maybe 5 minutes which was just enough time for the guy cutting my hair to slice open the tops of BOTH of my ears with the clippers and miss a handful of hairs throughout my head. Anybody who gets buzzcuts on a regular basis knows that it does take a bit of effort to give a good cut, but this particular experience was absolutely terrible. I regret not cutting my hair myself. This was not an isolated experience. Do yourself a favor and resist the trendiness of this place and go elsewhere. read more

I was given a recommendation here from a friend so when it came time to get a fresh cut I decided this would be the place I would go. I have to admit the first visit felt a little bit awkward and there were communication errors between myself and the stylist. But it wasn't particularly a bad experience, just faintly awkward. Not enough to put me off at all. When it came time again for another haircut I booked another appointment, and made my way over to jd's once again. This second experience was the one that made me understand why I was given a recommendation in the first place. They were polite. My stylist and I had great communication and I was able to get exactly what I wanted out of the experience. Which was a good haircut I could enjoy. Overall I give them 4 stars and I would definitely continue to suggest friends go there for cuts and fades. read more

Not, "If you're free, come back in 40 minutes" or "When would be a good time for you?". I asked about coming back around 3.00, to which he replied "It's hard to say if that will be a good time or not". K, thanks bud. Seems like high turnover in here. Been three times and got different people because the last person that chopped my lid was gone. First guy was really talented, next I got a girl who was terrible and then a different guy who was ok. Have not been back since. The people that work there are generally cool but it seems a bit unorganized. Very disappointing and pricey. I was charged for a scotch I didn't even order and the shave was sub par at best. I've had better shaves with $1 disposable ones. The haircut was mediocre, I felt like the barber had no idea what he was doing, I've had better haircuts for half the price. The staff is rude and even though they might think they are cool or hip or whatever they come off as immature and unprofessional. Save your money - don't come here. read more

The staff here are skilled and social. I can see why people like this place but it's just not for me. I wish I'd read the yelp reviews before going - the comments about how hipster it is are bang on. If you're a hipster you'll probably find it "awesome" and "rad" as other reviews say. If you're not, it's probably not what you expect from a barbershop. First off - I called the place at noon to set up an appt for 4:30 and the person I usually go and see wasn't working, thus I muttered the dangerous words "I don't care who cuts my hair." I arrived at 4:25 and went up to the front to let them know I arrived and they told me to take a seat. Meanwhile one of the barbers (who I'm guessing from the other comments is Momo cause she just played with her dog) was blatantly ignoring me. In walks one of her friends at 4:30 - i know he didn't have an appointment because he announced it blatantly, and of course, he got seated immediately. 4:50 rolls by and another person walks in and asks if anyone is available for a walk in. One of the hair dressers (who again was petting a dog) perked up and sat him immediately. I didn't even know this person worked there as they had not paid me any attention. When I finally got sat at 5:00 I asked for a 3 on the sides and an inch off the top. period. I didn't ask for this god-awful choppy fade from a 1 OR the freaking line in my hair. My head looks like a poorly trimmed vagina. Thanks assholes. read more

4.5 stars, really. Not 5 because I've only went there once so far but I'm definitely going back and possibly considering switching to these guys permanently. Great service and, better yet, great cut overall and this is with my stylist who's from France and didn't exactly understand everything I said to him. That said, rest assured, everyone else speaks perfect english there and no stylist will mess up your hair even if he has a limited English vocabulary. They are quite attentive to getting your hair the way you want it. But, at the same time, in my case, the guy who cut my hair understood what cut or what slight alteration of what I initially wanted (faux hawk) would suit me better. So not only do they do good hair, they save you from the one thing that can really screw up your look, yourself. This is definitely a great place for young guys (teens to late 30s) to get their hair cut without spending much at all. The prices are very reasonable; it was$26.25 in total for my short hair cut. The atmosphere is very chill and its a place for the everyday guy to go to look good or just for the usual trim/haircut (they're good with short hair too. Something I find rare in a lot of other places) If you're looking for a transition from the old barber you've been going to since you were a 11 , or looking for a new place that gives less old, classic cuts you've been having for awhile, OR sick of the countless salons/shops that do both gender haircuts but really are only good with women's hair (and in my case, they couldn't even do a simple buzz cut) JD's should make you very happy. read more

These guys all seem to have proper training - the haircuts are among the best in the city. I can't say the same for the barber joint across the street in the Donnelly building. That place will disappoint you in several ways (service, quality, attitude). My buddies are also starting to lose faith in their Main St. barbers and they are slowly making the move to Gastown for their haircuts. Go to Jd's, you'll look sharp when you walk out. If I had a dollar for every daft comment I heard in there, I'd almost have enough for a six pack; but I go there for the haircuts, not the world views.
