This is one of the best BJJ academies I've ever had the opportunity to train at. If you're in the…read moreOrangevale/Citrus Heights/Folsom area, give this place a look and come check out a trial class! While looking for a gym, I trained at a few academies in the area since moving to Sacramento. After a solid trial class and a few conversations with the owner/head coach, I knew this was the right training environment and a meaningful long-term investment for me. Being extremely skilled and experienced in a technical art is one thing, and being able to teach, demonstrate, and convey those skills to multiple audiences of varying ability is another thing. Chris Holdsworth has both of these capabilities in droves - he is able to teach the nuances and details of BJJ to a group of white belts to brown belts at the same time. There's always a detail he's able to highlight so that everyone is learning and improving their game. The best part of this academy is that no matter your niche, you can find the right education and training for your needs: - If you want to compete at the highest levels of competition/sport BJJ or even consider MMA and pro fights, Chris Holdsworth has the extensive experience and capability to help guide you through that process. - If you're a beginner and looking to learn the skills and get your feet wet, there are plenty more like you. - If you're a dad with kids looking to get in better shape and be healthier, there's a spot for you too. (This is me.) The overwhelming majority of folks who roll here do so to enjoy training and learn/improve in their BJJ journey, not to destroy or injure their training partners or stroke their egos. As an older guy with a family and a job I need to keep, safe training is paramount to me - this place provides just that environment, and I consider myself very lucky. The only drawback is that the classes can get very crowded because they're so popular! Hopefully when the gym grows to a larger training space it won't be an issue. Highest recommendation.

I couldn't imagine training anywhere else other than with Chris! If you're considering joining, I highly recommend coming in for a free class. You'll meet great people and learn from an amazing instructor. Holdsworth Jiu Jitsu Academy is the place to be!

I still remembered a lot of the punches and combinations, but my footwork, reactions, and power needed work, and Eddi has been really good at breaking those things down and helping me sharpen them again. I also appreciate that he's been thoughtful about the fact that I'm postpartum and returning to more intense training. He's encouraging, knowledgeable, easy to work with, and makes the sessions feel productive without being overwhelming. I'm looking forward to continuing to train with him and seeing how much I can improve.

The studio is actually big enough to have lots of members attend the classes. There's plenty of free weights, machines, and cardio machines available. The cardio equipment is located upstairs and it's not blocking other machines in the weight training area. The studio and turf are located upstairs. There's an area to stretch and use matts on both floors. The free weights and machines are located on both floors. Bathrooms are located on the bottom floor towards the back. The spa and pool are also in the back. The gym is spacious and clean, even the bathrooms. Members re-rack their weights, which I appreciate. The staff are super friendly and helpful. They have personal trainers and a chiropractor on staff. There's plenty of parking. The app to check in works fairly well, but it's not always accurate when it comes to the classes. The only "negatives" are that people love to talk in the weight room, and personal training is almost always happening, so finding a quiet place (when you don't have noise canceling headphones) is nearly impossible.

I've been a member of In-Shape Fitness for some time, but my recent experience has left me…read moreseriously reconsidering my membership. While the gym itself has a decent setup and the equipment is adequate, the management and childcare experience were extremely disappointing. During a visit to the gym, my child was placed in the kids' care area, and when I came to pick them up, they were crying and had visible red marks on their forearm and stomach. Initially, staff (Nimsy) did not disclose what happened, and after I asked, I was told that another child had pushed my kid down--twice--and even sat on them. This happened on a soft play toy, roughly two feet high. I understand accidents can happen with kids, but what I cannot understand is the lack of transparency and communication. The staff withheld critical information about the incident, leaving me in shock and deeply concerned for my child's safety. Asking to see security footage was met with the response that I would need a police report first, which felt like an unnecessary barrier and added to the frustration. The lack of accountability and clear protocol for handling these situations is alarming. While the gym is clean and has a variety of equipment, I cannot feel comfortable bringing my child back under these circumstances. Parents entrust facilities like this with their children, and the way this incident was handled seriously undermines that trust. I hope management takes serious steps to improve childcare safety, communication, and transparency. Until then, I cannot recommend In-Shape Fitness for families with young children. Currently here now filing a police report and seeking the truth.
