Dropped my knives off that desperately needed sharpening Monday. Was told they'd be ready Tues. morning. Tuesday morning comes and goes, but I didn't really think about it. I look at my phone later that afternoon and showed that they texted me at 9:30AM that the knives are ready to be picked up. Went to pick them up Wed. The girl at the counter said "$20." I thought she was saying $20 per knife, but nope, it. Was. $20. TOTAL!! $4/per knife! 2 of the knives have serrated blades, which I've always been charged extra for, but not here. I was shocked so I said "$20 for all of them? You sure?" To which she responded "Do you want to pay more?" I have "fancy" German knives and don't trust them to just anybody to sharpen them, but I'm glad I trusted the other Yelp reviews and went with Jay's. Location is in an industrial area and kinda hard to find - I just happened to turn my head as I was driving down Tompkins and saw the sign. My knife was totally out of shape and badly needed to be sharpened but I could never make it to Jay's before they closed. Finally got the time and dropped it off last week. Picked it up few days later and it was back to being as sharp as ever. It cut all my veg like a warm knife through soft butter. So glad I found Jay's. The price was reasonable and the service was even better. The nice lady even suggested a bin of cheap knives I could buy from if I needed a knife during the time my knife was in for service. It's just across the street from the Orleans Arena so if you need something sharpened, take it to Jays. They also sharpen gardening tools and scissors. Dropped off three Lamson kitchen knives to be sharpened and received a text message a few hours later that they were done. Picked them up and closely inspected the work and I have to say I'm very impressed. By far the best sharpening company I have ever used. One knife had a little nick and that was fixed, the edges on the sharp ends were perfectly straight and have a nice, non-porous finish. Very sharp as well, of course. I was very impressed by this place and the service they provided. There was no judgment here I brought my mix match hodge podge of kitchen knives. There is nothing expensive or professional about my knives but I was tired of getting roasted every time my mother or my mother Inlaw came over and had to use them. Both of them have culinary background and they were ruthless. So, I read about this place on Yelp and I had to get these knives sharpened. At $4 a knife they seemed to be way more reasonable then the other places that charge by the inch. You don't even need to have knives! They have these bins that have their already sharpened pizza cutter, filleting and Cheff knives that you can pick up for $4-$5 a piece! Pretty great deal if you ask me. Came here and was blown away by their work. It was about a 24 hour turn around for my knives to be sharpened. I got them in 1054am and got them around 10:30 the next day. With those 4 knives it came out to $17 which wasn't too expensive for how sharp they were. I could shave my arms if I wanted to with the knives. One thing I do want to mention though. I wasn't given a order form or anything of the sort to fill out my information and I found that kind of odd. Maybe just a sheet to fill out the info and the names of knives if applicable so they don't get mixed up. Just a suggestion though read more

Growing up I lived in a family that bought knives at places like Target and Dollar Tree. Suffice it to say, I've had more than a few knives break off their hilt while I was chopping and, it's only by the grace of God that I still have all of my fingers. My parents are the type that look at the price tag first and if it falls apart after a handful of uses, just go out and buy a new one. This never made sense to me and I always hated how I had to just deal with the fact that it was going to be either a test of strength or a test in not cutting my hand off when I would try to cut an uncooked sweet potato with a $1.00 steak knife. When I moved out onto my own, I thought about how my parents took care of knives and did the exact opposite. No dollar knives, no storing all of the knives in a ceramic pitcher like a bouquet, no throwing them in the dishwasher or letting them "soak" in a pot of water. Now, while my parents think I am insane for spending the same amount of money on a single knife and a pair of shears that they would spend on 120 knives at Dollar Tree, I'll do it my way to save my fingers and my time in the kitchen. Part of doing it my way is taking care of my quality pieces and that's where Jay's comes in. I found this place on Yelp and with a less than 24 hour turnaround, I had super sharp blades again. I took in: 8 inch Global Chef's Knife Kershaw Taskmaster Shears Cleverest Son's Wife (yeah that's the actual brand name) T-644 Stainless Cleaver Total bill: $9 I'm very pleased with how they turned out and my cleaver, which was a low cost but quality purchase from Ranch 99, is now sharper than when I purchased it. The place was SUPER busy as evidenced by the multitude of knives ready to go in and out of the sharpening room. If you need your knives before the weekend, make sure to bring them in ahead of time (maybe midweek) because everyone clearly has the same idea to get them sharpened at the last minute on Friday morning. read more

Stopped into Jay's to get several knives sharpened. The neighborhood is industrial but don't let that bother you Jay's has a great lobby with knives for sale. The staff greetings us and were very helpful and polite. The person that helped us let us know the cost to sharpen the 6 knives and when they should be ready. They were ready early. We used some of the knives that night and were very happy with the sharpening. They are sharper than I ever remember. They are easy to cut with. They did a great job sharpening the knives. 10 years in Vegas and I have had my blades sharpened by mobile sharpeners and that other shop on Charleston. Never have I received all my blades and shears in working condition.
