Before scheduling our first visit in December 2024, we carefully researched local cataract surgery options and Dr. Niraj Patel. We selected Dr. Patel based on his experience.The process to secure that initial appointment took two months. We believe Dr. Patel is a skilled ophthalmologist and surgeon. That said, we both felt pressured at the first exam with him to opt for the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL), a $4,500 per-eye ($9,000 total) upgrade not covered by Medicare or our secondary insurance. The clinic prominently promotes this option, which likely benefits its revenue. Despite our optometrists advising against a replacement lens other than "standard," we briefly considered it due to the strong recommendation. This raises concerns about whether other elderly patients might feel similarly pressured. Anyone considering this clinic should thoroughly research the LAL option and discuss it with their optometrist or primary care provider before making a decision. After our exams, we met with the "scheduling coordinator" for Dr. Patel's surgeries. We were informed that due to a backlog, surgery dates would be significantly delayed. We accepted this reality and continued the process. However, communication with the clinic was frustratingly difficult. Getting answers required showing up in person and hoping someone could assist us. Scheduling changes were nearly impossible without being pushed months further down the waitlist. Even urgent non-elective medical issues did not seem to influence scheduling flexibility. Patients should be aware of these limitations before committing to the required exam process. This is a business in search of large patient volume and the bottom line. After nearly three months of waiting, we have canceled all future appointments with PNEA. It is too frustrating. Based on our experience, we would not recommend this clinic. Patients should carefully research not only the procedure itself but other local Opthalmology clinic choices, the clinic's billing practices, scheduling and communication policies. We hope others have a smoother experience than we did.

He willingly postponed it when we were apprehensive in March when the COVID-19 virus had so much uncertainty. Now he scheduled me and my right eye was a breeze. The operating room staff was friendly and put me at ease. Post operative was simple and I was out of the office in an hour. When I was concerned about a post operative question, he replied promptly. Tacoma Family Eyecare is located in the optical section of the Tacoma Costco (37th Street). They…read morehave appointment booking capability from their website, however, I was already at Costco when I decided to pop in to make a new patient appointment. They were able to get me in within the same week! The receptionist was helpful and friendly, with the ability to answer my questions regarding insurance and what the eye exam entailed. I opted for an appointment that would give me both my glasses and contact prescription. The day of my appointment, I filled out a quick questionnaire to establish my care as a patient, and one of their techs performed the initial eye exam ($40 out of pocket, covered by certain insurances, but a very important eye exam as it checks your eye health). Dr. Kathy Kim was the optometrist I saw the day of my appointment. She began with asking if I had my glasses with me ('dOh, I forgot to bring them!) but I was able to tell her the power of each eye from a prescription from 1.5 years ago before I moved to Tacoma. Th usual eye exam commenced, with having to read the letters with one eye, and then the other. Dr. Kim mentioned the slight astigmatism that I've heard I've had for a while, but hadn't been corrected by other optometrists/ophthalmologists. She gave me the option to do the regular contacts I was accustomed to, but also suggested trying toric contact lenses to adjust for the astigmatism. Dr. Kim explained that these type of lenses would reduce squinting, and help with driving at night, reducing glare. Her receptionist was able to give me trials for both the regular contacts with my updated prescription (same day), and ordered trial torics which came in several days later. What I loved about Dr. Kim was her demeanor. She was professional, and able to build a great rapport during the quick 15 minute exam! She allowed me to look at the eye health screen (your vision is priceless, it's worth the $40!) and let me know that they have a 90 day follow up policy to have the lenses adjusted, should I not love the trials before ordering my contact supply. 5/5 highly recommend! (P.S. I don't believe you need a Costco membership to utilize this clinic in Costco).

After narrowing down the list, I learned that he was the first in our area to offer this. I read his bio and was impressed--he was chief of surgery in the military, he has trained other surgeons, but especially because he goes on humanitarian missions twice a year to provide cataract surgery to restore vision to the underprivileged in other countries, and he also does the same in the US. I mean, in his time off, what does he do...he performs even more surgery! He is a good man. I was very fortunate to find Dr. Dahlhauser. He quickly cleared up areas of concern a previous surgeon had raised by pulling up on-screen scan results, and I was impressed with his modern equipment and assessment which resonated with me, and I felt very confident. I now have perfect 20/20 and J1 near vision, for which I am very grateful. He was very kind to me, and reassured me before surgery when I was feeling anxious, and did the same at surgical follow up. I asked if we could bill this time because unfortunately we do not have it today. At first she said we could not see the doctor. I said we made special arrangements to get here and drove a long way. She then said very rudely to "just make sure we pay it!" with a head shake and as if talking down to someone. I said "Why wouldn't we pay it?" The comment hit hard because we are black and have experienced this type of treatment before. we are respected, black, senior people of the community who paid their bills . This type of treatment should not be tolerated. If my 87 year old husband dud not need his treatment i we would not come back. But trust me i am looking for another doctors office after today.
