WINCE. How did a $2 iced tea, of which I requested to be half tea/half lemonade (thus becoming an Arnold Palmer) turn into a $6 drink? Is their lemonade made from unicorn pee? I'm not a coffee shop snob, but the cost of that drink and a small smoothie for one of my kiddos would've been lunch w/ tip and a soda for me elsewhere. Two of the three young lasses working there may need to chip away at their icy expressions as hoards of summery tourists on caffeine patrol are going to start flooding their front door soon. On the tail-end of spring, I went into Java Java last week, and even though the line was very short, the staff looked like we were inconveniencing them by being there. (Eye-rolls and hair-flips.) I can only imagine how chaotic this place (charming as it is, and the chalkboard of food items WAS really tempting) is going to get throughout the summer season, so I would hope that their customer service improves, or at least they make eye contact and offer some sort of smile. read more

I've been several time on my way out to Kiawah. It's located in the Freshfields center next to Harris Teeter (formerly Newton Farms). They've got free wifi (password provided). I got my standard venti cappuccino, but YIKES! It was so much more potent than anything I get from Starbucks, Barnes and Noble, or Orange Spot! I normally put two sugars in, but this...I had to put four and it was still whoopass. Last time I tried a normal ol' Americano...same thing. Whoopass! So, be warned. This is high octane coffee! This is a cute little coffee house in the fresh fields plaza. I had high hopes for this place. I ordered a frozen chai and a cheese Danish. My husband ordered one of their breakfast sandwiches. My biggest complaint is the time it takes to get food. I had finished my Danish and drink before my husband got his croissant with egg and cheese. We are talking over 15 minutes here and this seemed to be the norm because I heard other people asking where there food was. I would have forgiven the place if it was packed full of people but there were two other people there and both were waiting for food. So this seems to be a production issue. I would suggest to the owners to figure out a way to pick up service and time. However my frozen drink was fine and atmosphere was fine. Just keep in mind about the wait. read more

It feels like many reviewers are too fussy! This is a delightful, well above average coffee shop with many delicious food options and good coffee. I ordered an eggs, cheese & tomato flatbread that was scrumptious and enough for breakfast & lunch. Having someone else cook for me during this pandemic is a huge treat. This coffee shop is a very cute place. It is nestled on the edge of Marriott's Andell inn and the Kiwah island golf resort. The staff seem to be very kind and courteous and the quaint setting fits for a easy morning picker up. Unfortunately for location as I write my review and finish my coffee I await for my croissant sandwich. The dilemma progressed only to realize that my eggs were not even fresh but reheated medallions. If not medallions then certainly liquid eggs. My croissant was indeed light and flakey and served hot however, the Danish was clearly not fresh and was served well chilled. Although the Danish tasted good it failed to give off the freshness that it marketed. Finally my latte was more like a blend of coffee and hot chocolate. It is my hole opinion that their barista may need a bit more training. Overall not great but not bad. read more

I highly recommend not ordering food from here. I had a fig and prosciutto panini that I ended up throwing out after two bites. I hate wasting food and never do this. The meat was extremely salty (more so than normal prosciutto), the fig preserves were overly processed, there was barely any brie, and the flatbread they served it on was cheap. The cashier wasn't wearing a mask and asked if we wanted to add gratuity vs. letting us check out ourselves. The woman who gave us our food seemed pissed that we had stepped in the establishment even though we were wearing masks, keeping to ourselves, and were polite. What. This is one of those places that entices me every time I'm headed to Kiawah, then as soon as I get my order (and wait 10-15 minutes for it), I remember how unimpressive it is. I know it's in Freshfields, but the prices are still way too high for the quality. Last time I ordered a vanilla latte, I swear they forgot to put in the coffee. It tasted like vanilla milk. The regular coffee always tastes a little burned, and the pastries are just ordinary. I've now learned that there is a Harris Teeter across the street with a Starbucks and breakfast bar inside, so it pains me not to support a local business, but I will definitely be going there in the future. read more

It's a good thing I don't live near here year round or I'd be broke and weigh 400 pounds. Disclaimer: I'm not a coffee drinker, so I can't speak for that, but this was one of the tastiest breakfasts I can remember having. Tried the classic breakfast sandwich. You choose between bacon, sausage, and ham, which goes with scrambled egg, cheddar cheese, and tomato on a warm, herb something or other flatbread. I got the ham and took it back to the house I'm staying at on Kiawah. Oh my god. It was a little greasy but talk about flavor. I haven't ever had a breakfast sandwich that good. Since I ran earlier this morning I got a chocolate muffin too and that greatly exceeded my expectations. It was moist so the fact that it was all chocolate didn't make it overpowering. Easily downed without needing a drink. The only reason I'm giving it 4/5 is because they don't show their prices on the menu, and they're not cheap. My jaw dropped a little bit when the girl behind the counter told my dad that 2 sandwiches, a coffee, and a muffin would be $26 and change. I understand being pricy because of the location and having good food but you should be up front with your customers instead of surprising them after they've already ordered. read more

I was so excited to see a coffee shop on Kiawah, so I didn't have to travel to Johns Island, hunting for a local spot. Cute place with a promising menu, but I'd like if I said I wasn't disappointed in my brief visit. I ordered an iced latte, a cinnamon roll and egg/cheese/bacon on a croissant. When I ordered the iced latte, I asked if they could Splenda in it. They pointed me to the area where the sugars, etc were located - like "you can put your own in." Any barista worth his/her salt would know that you mix the sweetener in with the hot espresso and milk before you put the ice in. Otherwise some of these sweeteners just don't dissolve in an iced drink. Anyway, no biggie. Many baristas get it right without my prompting, and many don't. All the pastries are wrapped up in cellophane, which isn't great from a display standpoint. The cinnamon roll was ho hum and a little stale. Tasted like it might have been made on Tuesday (today is Friday). I liked that the icing wasn't overwhelmed by cream cheese. It may have been more of a butter cream icing, which was a redeeming quality. The croissant sandwich was good and bad. The croissant and bacon were good, but the texture of the egg seemed as though it was a microwaved scrambled egg, not one they fixed on a grill to-order. The egg was hard and dense, which made for an odd experience. Lastly, I noticed none of the three staff behind the counter seemed at all engaged with the customers with any positive vibes. They were mostly doing their job quietly, and oftentimes not even responding to the customers saying "Have a great day!" The customers were warmer and friendlier than the staff. I would imagine the Kiawah clientele isn't the easiest. Older and wealthier folks can be persnickety, honestly. But, this is a real opportunity to be a great neighborhood coffee shop. With the right staff - genuinely greeting folks and trying to have a good time behind the counter - this place could kill it. I have been coming to Kiawah Island since I was six years old and this place is the epitome of all of the overpriced and totally overrated businesses they're throwing up in Fresh Fields Village. The interior is definitely cozy and cute but the extent of my praise stops there. The majority of the staff is very curt and unprofessional. The younger employees always look bored or annoyed, probably because working there is just another cruddy summer job to most of them. My father and I both frowned at our fruit smoothies that were too icy to drink through a straw. My mother's coffee was lukewarm. The egg and cheese sandwich I ordered was chewy and unappealing overall. It was a "sad" meal, for lack of a better word. I come here every once in awhile hoping that the quality of the food and service will improve, but it never changes! Lesson learned. I'll be getting my coffee from the nearby gas station from now on. read more

Chai Latte was very good! One of the better ones I've had. The turkey sandwich with brief and cranberry mayo was also top notch. Sandwich wasn't too big or too small, it was just the right. Also the macaroons were massive!! I don't have macaroons often nor do I consider myself an expert when it comes to them but I definitely want to try one when I go back. The only thing is that it is a tad bit pricey - but the alternative is Starbucks which is probably the same price - but you have to remember, you can get Starbucks anywhere. read more
