cannot recommend this roastery. ordered 10lbs of beans on january 8th. it is now february 19th, with no sight of the shipment. conversation with rep and owner essentially put the blame on me for not paying extra for expedited shipping--it was supposed to be at my door in five business days--the math doesn't work out. no effort made on their part to make this right. totally unacceptable for a company dealing with a product that demands a reasonable shipping time to maintain freshness that degrades with every passing day. read more

Upset with the direction Javablend has gone. The staff at the shop used to be A+++. No comparison now. Almost like they switched out real North Enders for wannabes. Please teach your employees/barista's to properly seal a bag of coffee. Every time I buy my pounds here now they fold the top down once making no effort to get rid of the air inside. Also, some of the newer staff here can be impolite.. When dealing with customers it is not difficult to greet them happily, and wish them a good day as they leave. Often times I'm ignored when I say thank you on my way out. These interactions should be smooth and positive for the customer. No one should leave with a bad taste in their mouth. I don't appreciate attempting to All of the OG staff members here are great, it seems to be some of the younger, new employees who could learn a thing or two. We walked over on a hot day to order a hot coffee before breakfast and we weren't disappointed. The lineup outside the building (socially distanced of course during the COVID-19 times) suggested it was a popular locale and they backed up they perspective with their service, goods, and price. We quickly got to order and we served at a take away window shortly afterward. Two drinks and a muffin for less than 10 dollars! Myself with a basic brewed coffee and Sandy with a double shot decaf Americano. Both drinks were nice. Mine was smooth and very drinkable. I also ordered a lemon poppyseed muffin which was a little lackluster on the lemon flavour, in my opinion. Overall it was great and maybe next time on a hot summer day I'll try the iced coffee slush. read more

I've tried a lot of different types of coffee from many different coffee spots (how dare you call me a coffee slut) but this one takes the bean. I still remember my all time fav that I can't get anymore. It was a Syrian dark roast. BLACK GOLD!! Omg so good. I went back many times hoping to get more but this love was not meant to be. Luckily there's always some deliciously aromatic brew that reminds me how great JB is. It's like I can't go wrong. I also love the atmosphere JB usually has although I haven't been there since Covid lockdown. Anyway, try something you know you'll like and the next time try something new. Use to be a great place to sit down and enjoy your coffee. Staff was always friendly,( well besides the manager) I always enjoyed our little meet and greets in the morning. Was always a great feeling seeing the happy face with a heart on the cup on more than one occasion. Then One day I walked in and sat down to enjoy my coffee. The manager came over telling me that I was no longer wanted in there establishment. This completely shocked and hurt me in ways that they will never know. I was hoping that some of the workers would have stepped up for me but of course if they did they probably would have lost their jobs. If you see this I would appreciate if you come forward just to clear up the loose ends. Why is it when you are a decent person to staff that there is always that one individual that has to become jealous enough to try to ruin your good reputation that you have built for years in your neighborhood. So I wouldn't recommend this place until they can step forward and right a wrong. read more

Perhaps a visit to Java Blend will set me down the straight and narrow. At home, their beans are my number one choice. Currently I'm working my way through a scrumptious bag of Fog City, a perfectly balanced, rich little bean with a smooth finish. The prices at Java Blend are as good as the coffee. Their drinks are expertly prepared and the service is fun, prompt and most often attractive. Java Blend is the bee's knees of coffee in Halifax. I only ever get their coffee to go as the tables are always occupied. It doesn't scream cozy but it does yell deliciousness! Their coffee is among the best in Halifax (I get it twice while down at the Market). The K2 coffee is the best bean I have ever, ever had and panic if I run low at home. Prices for drinks and beans are very reasonable. While I am at it, the shop is excellent to deal with from a fundraising point of view as my sorority works with them every year, selling beans to raise money for our charitable ventures. read more

Java Blend is in my top 5 favourite coffee shops across the city. They roast their own beans and upon entering the shop you can smell the delicious aroma. Living in the North End it is pretty close to my place, which makes it perfect for a Saturday morning coffee stop. They also have bike parking outside and a few tables for outdoor seating. Inside they sell baked goods, coffee, specialty coffee and tea based drinks. In addition to some great coffee making gear, espresso machines, travel mugs etc.. My favourite part of Java Blend is their prices and quality of coffee. You can get a great coffee for under $2 and one of the best lattes in town for under $3. Check it out and enjoy some great coffee at a local shop that has been around for years. read more

I think I will be awake for a week now! I am no coffee expert, but I think it is safe to say Java Blend has some of the best coffee in these here parts! They offer a smorgasbord of coffee selection that could compete with ANY coffee house I have ever been to! The atmosphere is quiet and relaxing, plus the price is completely affordable! They also have delicious sweet treats, aka HUGE cinnamon buns and moist muffins, plus a few gluten free options (although I don't know if it is something they have all the time) It is a wonderful place to stop in and read or do some work while you have a coffee, the tables are a little small, so I wouldn't recommend for larger group meetings or anything but for a quiet relaxing space, it's great! It is also just nice to have a local coffee roaster that really exemplifies the type of place we should be supporting. Hard working, amazing products and friendly service. I also prefer to buy fair trade and organic coffee. So I never expected to find such an outstanding selection in Halifax's north end right next to a Robin! It is a challenge to find parking, but once you get inside, however many circles around the block you needed are worth it. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The choices...well too many to mention from mild to powerful. They come from Africa, Latin & South America, as well as Asia & the Pacific Island. My latest purchase - Fog City...I even love the name is a tasty blend from Mexico, Peru and Columbia and it's Organic and Fair Trade. Delicioso...I can almost hear the Latin music in the background. With so many five-star ratings, a business is either off-the-charts incredible, or disappointingly overhyped and I'm very glad to report that when it comes to Java Blend, it's definitely the former. While the café itself doesn't really do it for me with small, simple tables scattered around, the range, quality and flavours of coffee are something special. Staff seem to know their stuff - although perhaps a little too much for a baby coffee drinker like myself - and are happy to help you figure out what you're looking for. The prices are great, the music is awesome (I'm so on board with a full-on motown revival), and being able to take home bags of espresso as you leave can't be beat. I'm not sure whether to kick myself for not going sooner, or going more often; but Java Blend is one brew that's well worth the visit. There's a reason you could go by just about any day of the week and see the place positively buzzing with activity. They know their stuff, they do it well, and man oh man is it ever good. The cafe itself was kind of small, but it had the feel of a good old-fashioned coffeehouse. As I mentioned before, it's pretty much constantly buzzing, so if you want to sit and enjoy your coffee, you might be waiting a bit; but that in no way diminishes from the experience. The service too is some of the fastest I've experienced anywhere, be it a big chain or other small local joints. The staff make it both fast and friendly, which works very well to their credit. If you love coffee like I do, you'll love Java Blend. A bit off the beaten downtown path, but well worth the visit. read more

I went to Java Blends for the first time ever last week. I'm pretty ashamed of myself, as I've lived in Halifax since 2009, but you know...busy busy... While I didn't really love the indoor seating set-up (seems a little impersonal, jumbled and strewn-about), I did really enjoy my coffee, my service and the little breezy outdoor table that my roommate shared with me. I went with the intention of buying a pound of delicious beans for home. I've been spoiled as I work somewhere with amazing espresso, but it's not okay for me to take that business home with me. I had just burned through a bag of something or other from Just Us, and while it was good, I wanted to try something new. Roommate suggested Java Blends and so we went. When I explained to the baristo (barista? No speak italiano) what I was looking for, he was super-patient and knowledgeable and not pretentious and I was happy. He mixed up two suggested flavours for me to try at the cafe itself, and I was on my merry way to sip and decide. While I had been drinking a mix of El Salvador and Aztec, I ended going plain Jane with my Mocha. I'm happy with my choice every morning. Extra bonus at Java Blends: the hilarious duct tape adventure line to find the washroom. I felt like such an explorer in their stock room/roasting haven. Thanks for the beans, JB. There is nothing tastier and better for you than freshly roasted and locally ground coffee. It hasn't been sitting on a shelf forever, there is no risk of that weird fungi that forms in coffee, known as "coffee rust" which gives me a bad stomach and itchy skin. Thats the main reason why I love Java Blend. I know the coffee beans are fresh and I will have minimal reaction to the coffee. I like the old school cafe feel. Anyone of a certain age can recall the "coffee house" phase of Halifax back in the early '90s. Remember the Green Bean and Cafe Mocha? When I step through the doors at JB I feel like I am going back to those days where wifi was for the rich and coffee was good and cheap all OVER the city. read more

We got onto Java Blend coffee due to their close location to our home. Love this place! Lots of coffee selection, with well made coffee, and a fantastic alternative to chains. We also got onto their take home beans due to them posting a group buy. Their barristas were very knowledgable abou the various coffees and grinding to suit our needs. I also love walking by when they are roasting. Makes me drool to smell the coffee in the air! Do not park in the Robin's mini plaza parking lot beside it. A friend got 'booted' because of this but it was completely reasonable. There are signs that indicate parking is for customers only. read more

Halifax's best? Absolutely! First off, the smells that eminate from this store are divine- nothing beats the scent of freshly roasted coffee beans, especially when it's the wee hours of the morning and you need a pick-me-up. Seriously, take a stroll up North Street, and I'll bet the aromas of roasted coffee will lure you toward this cafe (if you're into coffee- if not, I digress.) The coffees here are brewed masterpieces, expertly roasted to please even the most discerning of tastes (ie. like mine!!). This cafe serves Fog City blends which are among my fave blends (the other is Intelligentsia from the Smiling Goat- but that's for another review ;P ) . I like my coffee the same way I like my men- rich!! (ha!)- and the Fog City blends definitely deliver on that premise with rich, tasteful flavoring (and an amazing aroma to boot). Anytime I drop by this store I make it a point to pick up some of the Columbian blend for at-home perkable goodness, and here's the thing: for the quality you get, the price is a steal- there have been occasions where I've paid more at the grocery store! Unreal. My only regret with this coffee shop is that I don't get to stop by here nearly enough- it's a little farther than my usual spots on Spring Garden. This place is exactly what it intends to be. The focus is on excellent coffee. Most people at the counter are actually buying beans by the pound and walking out the door. How many cafes can say that? The ones that stick around, buy their surprisingly inexpensive cup of java and have a seat in the modest yet hipster-cool surroundings. The coffee is simply the best cup you can get in Halifax. It's absolutely great tasting coffee. There is a good mix of ages and a spectrum of the local community with a focus on arty types. People are both friendly and reserved at once, my kind of vibe. They are sincere, interesting and surprisingly unpretentious. Even local tradesmen feel at ease strolling in to buy some for their buddies at the local work site (where ever that is). For sourcing the most ethical coffee beans from the far reaches of the world they sell it for a great price, and for the amount of people that are lined up here every time I go in, it isn't a secret. One of the best parts about Java Blend is the adventure to the bathroom.. This past Christmas I received a Moka Pot as a gift, and I just knew that Java Blend would be the right place to pick up some freshly roasted coffee for my new kitchen toy. I'm so happy I stopped in to pick up some of their House Blend. Of all the coffee shops in Halifax, this one definitely has the best "coffee" smell that hits you when you walk in, and the choices of beans seem endless. The staff know their stuff, and the story of their brand on the coffee packaging will instantly reassure you that yes, this is the place you want to buy your coffee from. I was not disappointed. Not only are their prices some of the lowest I have seen, their coffee is amazing. I really like the bundles they offer as that allows me to have a different coffee experience whenever I like. I typically drink dark roast and did not want to spend money on a whole bag of their light roast so I contacted them and they offered to send me a sample (a generous sample) of their light and medium roast coffee. So impressed with their customer service. The light and medium roast is better than I expected and may purchase some in the future. They ship quickly and shipping is free if purchasing over $75 worth of coffee, which adds up to 7 bags of coffee. Such a great place! read more

Java Blend is one of the best coffee houses you can find. Here they roast their own coffee and let me tell you, the smell when you walk in is just plain amazing. The prices do not seem to be as high as other shoppes either, which leaves the question of how can such a fabulous cup of coffee, cost less. SO. FREAKING. GOOD. Make fun of me all you want, but one of my main concerns of moving to Halifax was finding a new coffee place, I am a regular at Bridgehead in Ottawa, and I'm not exactly fond of Starbucks anymore. Thankfully I stumbled upon this fantastic place one day on my way to work. I mostly went with the mochas, and seeing as it was the summer I got them iced. They make the BEST mocha I have had, and I've had A LOT. They're not sickeningly sweet like Starbucks', you can still taste the coffee but it has a strong, rich chocolately taste. Fantastic. Their brewed coffee is also top notch, I've had the Columbian and a Kenyan roast and both were delicious. The best part is that the price is way better than Starbucks, Second Cup or even Tim Hortons, and their coffee is a step above those (in my opinion). The service is also 99% good. There was one guy that would make my mochas in the summer and would ALWAYS forget the chocolate syrup because he was yacking to his friend. These people are very nice and great latte to boot. They let me bring my small dog in (my arms) to quickly order my coffee and then I scooted out again to wait outside. She then brought me my latte...so nice! I went back inside quickly to ask if I could purchase an extra shot to make it a bit stronger and she said no problem and just added one to my drink for free. The vibe in here is nice, the people behind the counter and espresso machine, lovely and kind. And you know what? They don't charge you extra for soy milk and a double shot soy latte came to $3.25 (!!!) I will try their beans next. Thanks for such a pleasant experience. read more
