Welp...this Jasper Skytram...it paled in comparison to the Banff Gondola.
I am saying this in terms of the sights and surroundings at the summit. The gondola in Banff and the scenery there was epic.
And I would say that most folks do the exploration from Banff all the way to Jasper (or at least that's what I was doing) and so I had these massive expectations that I'd receive just as good of an experience from here high above Jasper just like I did the week prior in Banff. But that definitely wasn't the case.
I will just say that for mostly my entire 10 day exploration of the Canadian Rockies...I had unfortunate overcast weather conditions.
But...I still found taking the Banff Gondola to be exceptional and still captured memorable photos from high above...yet here in Jasper...the background landscape was just murkey...as if there was a haze where I couldn't photograph beautiful moments from the peak.
That's where I truly felt like this Jasper Skytram did not meet my expectations and why I'd go as far as suggesting while here in downtown Jasper...you could even skip this cable-car ride to the top...especially since it isn't exactly cheap...$61 - Canadian or $46 - US.
Hehehe...I've given my opinion, but I'd like to give the facts and details for those who are still interested in riding this Jasper Skytram...
- It's located 6.5 kilometers outside of downtown Jasper. It is very easy to find as you can simply plug it into Google Maps.
- Just like with the Banff Gondola, when at the ticket window here, they'll require you to choose a time you'd like to return down the mountain as to crowd control the tourists. I chose 2 hours and 30 minutes later (just like in Banff) but ultimately here, I didn't need that much time...maybe 2 hours at the most!
- I visited 2 weeks ago in the middle of June in early afternoon time and there was barely anyone here. Granted, it was overcast out...but still, it was not raining.
- The ride to the top was simple. You stand for maybe 7 minutes and it's a very smooth ride up. There's an attendant who guides the skytram inside with you. He gives info and stories about the area going up...and stays quiet on the way down though you're more than welcome to speak with him at any point in time.
- At the summit, first off...it was freezing up there (whereas in Banff the conditions were pleasant the week before). I'd advise to be dressed properly.
- The overlook area along the observation viewpoint was okay. The background wasn't special at all. I took a few pictures but felt unsatisfied, mostly.
- Behind the tram/gatehouse there's a trail I hiked for views heading higher offering mediocre scenery of the snowcapped mountains facing in the opposite direction of Jasper town.
This hiked is called...Whistlers Summit Trail - and it goes for about 1 hour.
The hike wasn't too strenuous. At first it's elevated and you may question if it's worthwhile, but eventually it levels off and you're able to see what's beyond the giant hillside.
Plus, also, if you don't attempt this hike, after 15 minutes of hanging out around the overlook area, you'll be bored and ready to return down the mountain.
So...with this Whistlers Summit Trail and also soaking up the surroundings at the peak, I used about 2 hours in total (which was more than enough time).
Granted, though, in the end, the pictures I was taking were far less superior than to what I viewed back in Banff.
I honestly questioned in my head..."why am I taking any photos? I'd just rather refer back to my pics from Banff?"
And I know I keep harping and comparing Banff to here in Jasper...but riding 2 gondola/skytrams in 1 week...my only natural inclination was to compare them both, lol.
In the end, regardless that I never got satisfactory views from this...Whistlers Mountain, at least I discovered what it's like to come here. And, I had to do this skytram considering how blissful I felt in the moment at Banff.
One last thing...(imo) the town of Jasper doesn't have much to do in terms of sightseeing and activities, so...if you're desperate and or looking to stay busy...then I guess you can come here to Jasper Skytram to help pass the time. But...it's also very skippable. You won't be missing out on anything. read more
