Awesome hike with spectacular views of glacier, mountains, and meadows. There is a short walk to the lake under the glacier but the meadows trail is more challenging. As you pass the lateral moraine on the way up, keep an eye open for pikas making hay and marmots sunning themselves. You will often hear the sound of and see small avalanches coming down Mt. Edith Cavell's face. When I was younger, and the glacier was less retreated, I remember seeing huge motorhome-sized pieces of ice fall from the glacier itself--very impressive, probably still happens but less often now (it didn't while I was there now). Please keep on the designated trails. This is a popular trail and they are struggling to restore the meadows from overuse. From the parking lot at 1738 m it heads up beside the lateral moraine for about 2 kms where a left takes you onto one side of a triangle of trail that heads to the highest viewpoint of the meadows, 2274 m at 3.5 km from start. Heading down and keeping left takes you to the lower viewpoint (2090 m, 1.25 km further). At about 5.5 km from start you complete the triangle and head down to meet the glacier lake loop. Stay left to visit the water's edge and see the icebergs and glacier ice across the lake. Return to parking lot along the other side of the glacier lake loop for a total of about 8.6 km. read more
