Stopping again in Jasper National Park a 2nd time during my North American travels, I finally got to hike and explore Mount Edith Cavell. Initially when I arrived here back in June, 2022, the road to the trailhead was blanketed in snow. Now for late September, I had a terrific opportunity to get a real feel perspective for what makes the surroundings here one of the most popular in all of Jasper. There are 2 pathways to hike... Of course, I couldn't decide which to venture along, so I just chose both! The Path of the Glacier Trail will take you to the foot of Cavell Glacier and the colorful turquoise green lake. It takes maybe 45 minutes to hike it. But, the real star to being at Mount Edith is hiking the Cavell Meadows Trail which you will lead you towards the top of the mountainous landscape for views from high above. This Cavell Meadows Trail goes for 6 - 7 kilometers roundtrip and 3 - 4 hours total. I highly recommend it! Regardless of which hikes and or trails you pick from, just being in such a snow-like winter setting made me feel far away from my realities of the South Florida palm trees. I couldn't have asked for a better day hiking and admiring the crisp and clear conditions. Lastly, Mount Edith Cavell is located right off Icefields Parkway...27 kilometers south of downtown Jasper, AB and is conveniently accessible to complementing the rest of the attractions in the area. read more

Hands down our favorite discovery/adventure while exploring The Canadian Rockies!! This area known as Mount Edith Cavell is also home to Angel Glacier, which is essentially the draw. Many choose to hike to the top, but after visiting Iceland and spending some time in a glacier lagoon, the bottom was where we wanted to go! It did NOT disappoint. The sound of the ice gently clanking has become one of my favorite sounds in the entire universe, and I've been chasing it ever since!! The only issue with hiking down to the base where the glacier falls is that it is pretty much forbidden. There have been flooding similar to tsunamis in the region when chunks of the glacier break off. There's many DO NOT ENTER signs but we stopped at nothing to get just a small taste of what we experienced in Iceland, so we risked it. The hike down is fairly easy but rocky. It is further down than it looks however. I would recommend hiking boots or shoes with good traction and ankle support so you don't slip on the ice and/or roll your ankle. We felt safe, although fully alert and prepared just in case we needed to bolt. We knew we definitely wanted to be up and out before the sun set and we were sure to listen for ice cracking. I wouldn't recommend this for someone who hasn't been near a glacier lagoon and who isnt familiar with what it sounds like just before the glacier breaks. You can visit and just enjoy the overlook, and it's worth it just to see it from there. There's a pathed walk up, so it is handicap and stroller friendly to a certain point, but it's a bit of an steep incline. It's about a mile or so each way. Totally worth it. It's not really near anything else and you won't have reception the closer to the water you get, again, all worth it. There are outhouses and parking for camper-vans. No overnight parking though. Wow what a beautiful hike! We started before sunrise, so we were the only ones on the trail. Very easy with not much elevation. You get real up close and personal with the glacier and it's just breathtaking in person. Not sure what else to say about this except just wow. read more

Wow! This place cannot be explained with words. It is a MUST SEE when you are in Jasper. Please don't let people scare you about the roads being windy. Just drive carefully and respect speed limits and you'll be fine. You'll thank me later! Again, this a gem and you won't regret it! read more

Amazing place to hike, you get the best view of Angel glacier from the lake or from the top of the hill midway on the trail. The hike is not too strenuous unless you continue past the end of the trail to East Ridge Summit. Go early because it gets really crowded later and the best views (sun is behind you) early in the morning. read more

Mount Edith Cavell - All smoky but beautiful - Parks Near Me - Jasper, Alberta

Gorgeous and very strange. I kind of felt like I was on the moon with all of the rugged, rocky terrain. Well, minus the plants and huge bodies of water of course. There's a beautiful blue-green glacial lake in the middle of the valley which is surrounded by a huge glacier on the backside. Large chunks of ice fall from the glacier, so be on alert. We definitely heard a lot of creaking. The valley area is called a moraine which is land carved out once a glacier recedes. There is some small scrub brush growing back, but it is quite rocky. Unfortunately the meadow trail was not open yet due to water/snow (this was early July!). The drive up to the mountain is extremely winding and narrow. There is a sign that clearly states RVs and trailers are not to make the climb, and they are to park in the lot at the foot of the mountain. But of course there was a small RV on the road going 5mph which we got stuck behind. This was some of the most interesting landscape I've ever seen, so don't miss it. Oh, and if you are wondering about the mountain's namesake, Edith Cavell was a British nurse who was executed by the Germans during WWI. read more

The Edith Cavell hike overlooking Angel Glacier was breathtaking. The hike was a bit strenuous in parts but that was also due to the cold winter air blowing it. The hike is worth it! I could have sat on the rocks looking unto the glacier for hours had the temperature not dropped significantly and the snow fall. It is a beautiful area and didn't have many tourists so it was perfect! read more

If you're in Jasper, make sure to visit this tourist destination. The drive up the snaking and switchbacking road takes a while with a 40 km/hr speed limit. However, the road has been freshly paved and is a pleasure to drive on. Once you reach the top, a parking lot appears right in front of the Angel glacier with the mountain shadowing high above from the ground. The glacier itself, in my opinion, is a huge reason to come. Although a small glacier, it's certainly very pretty and feeds the Cavell lake through a subterranean stream of water that appears all of a sudden, roughly 300 metres away from the glacier. Right in front of the glacier is a small pool of turquoise water with mini-icebergs floating in it. All of this is very beautiful and totally worth a drive up to. Edith Cavell is the name of a famous Canadian nurse from the World War I era and the mountain is named after her. There are hikes around the mountain (those usually take more than a day) for serious climbers. Hikes to the Tonquin valley as well as the well beaten track of the Cavell Meadows originate in this area and its vicinity. Plan ahead and try to do the Cavell Meadows, if you can walk. It's hard but certainly very rewarding. read more

Mt. Edith Cavel is not far from Jasper down the Icefields Parkway. My wife and I had been to Mt. Edith Cavell when we were in Jasper in 2009. The road was not not in good condition back then and it took quite a long time to get there. This visit was an easier drive this time and I made it to the pond with less trouble - except that there were many flies and mosquitos. It is sad to see so how much has melted since that time (we noticed the same at Athabasca Glacier). It was a good visit and I recommend it if you are visiting Jasper or traveling the Icefields Parkway. read more

Beautiful lake and hike! Didn't do the switchbacks up to the meadow but beautiful views all the same. I went in late afternoon and there was barely anyone there. So peaceful as well. Definitely recommend hiking beyond the main view point, the hike provides a different perceptive than the main view point. It's a must see! One of my favorite places that I visited in Banff/Jasper area. read more

Mount Edith Cavell - Parks Near Me - Jasper, Alberta

I was surprised to find that this was one of the busier parking lots during my travels between Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper. The drive here has a lot of curves, a 40km speed limit and almost no passing lanes for 14km, so be patient. You'll pass by a roadside parking area that is the start of other hikes and across from a campground - keep going for Edith Cavell, the parking lot is a real lot. You will have to hike the path of the glacier in order to reach the edith cavell meadows. I did this hike early September, and while beautiful, the flowers had already dried out. Nevertheless, definitely a worthwhile hike. I did not do the summit, but the whole hike (meadows and path of the glacier) took 3 hours. Footholds were solid, steepest climb is on the path of the glacier. read more

It is absolutely stunning. My father and walked half way to the Meadows on one of the moderately hard paths and it was a test for both of us in terms of fitness. I would highly recommend this hike and would like to add that there are rules for where to walk both due to reforestation processes and because of safety. Please follow the suggestions, they are there to keep you safe. read more

The best things are found by accident. Last weekend we decided to drive to Jasper for one night and explore what nature had to offer. I have been visiting Jasper for years but I have never heard of Mount Edith Cavell or the Angel Glacier. We found this by accident in a free tourist booklet. The drive to Mount Edith Cavell is beautiful. This is the best scenic drive we went on in Jasper. The road is smooth, as a result, all of the twists and turns are phenomenal. The drive allows you to witness beautiful scenery and wildlife. The drive itself is worth it. Once you reach the parking lot, 40 - 50 minutes later, you begin your climb up Mount Edith Cavell. It's a beautiful 20 - 40 minute stroll to the top of the mountain for families with children, couples that are out of shape, and the elderly. It is a quick 10 - 20 minute walk for an individual in average shape. The walk or stroll to the top will bring you face-to-face with Angel Glacier. It is named as such because it has the appearance of an angel with out-swept wings. The glacier itself is hundreds of years old and a beautiful glacial lake has formed under Angel Glacier. Mount Edith Cavell is a must-see for every single tourist (or local) in the area. The vastness and the diverse landscape will leave you breathless! read more

We visited Mount Edith Cavel in 1957 - driving our 1953 Volkswagen and found the road from Edmonton to the Mount and then to Jasper and Banff quite acceptable We enjoyed the experience and wandered about - the only living creatures in the entire place, until returning to our car and finding our keys locked inside with the windows tightly locked as we had been advised due to wildlife. There was not a soul in sight and very little traffic in April. After much worrying and time a car arrived in the lot and loaned us a wire clothes hanger - we opened the car and were on our way after thanking the other crazy couple who visited the area before season BUT were angels to us and we remember this beautiful place to this very day. read more
