Eagles Nest popped up on Google Maps and away we went. This vineyard is like an eagles nest - you have views of the beautiful sky, rolling hills and the urban buildings of Hillsboro in the distance. They have only started making wine in the last couple of years, so the vineyard is still new. We walked through some of the vines and you could see grapes in different stages of growth. There are a few tables, a few Adirondack chairs and soft rolling grass that you can sit and enjoy the views on. The wine? Delicious! We tried the red flight which was a mix of roses and reds. The wine making here is based on naturalized farming techniques and limited interventions. They depend on the silt from the nearby Columbia River to enrich the grapes. I'm not a fan of reds but I enjoyed this vineyard a lot! We will be back when we are in Oregon next time :)

We also wanted a place that offered tastings of white wines since Pinot is not our favorite. We arrived without a reservation. Mind you, this place is HUGE! There are numerous rooms that were completely empty. The main tasting room had probably 5 tables occupied, so it was not crowded. We didn't make a reservation because we went to another winery first, which was a 90 minute tasting, and then had lunch afterwards. Domaine was our second stop, but we didn't want to guess at a time we'd arrive with our driver. The host was kind enough and sat us at a low table that I requested. It took about 10 minutes before anyone came to our table to pour some tastes. While we waited, my sister walked over towards the bar area and overheard two of the wine servers say "it's okay, they're just a walk-in." Really? Maybe we were a walk-in with a thousand dollars to spend! Our pourer was accommodating to our taste for white wine and created a tasting for us. We also ordered a half serving of oysters to pair with our wines. After our first taste, the guy came back and poured us three tastes of three of the same varietal and left the bottles on our table. We waited over 30 minutes for him to come back! In that time, we took it upon ourselves to refill our glasses, and not one person came to see if we were okay or if we were done with our oysters. Finally, after that long wait, we got to taste two more whites. The tasting was $60 each, but if you bought wine totaling $120, they waived the fees. Only because of that, I ordered two bottles. That, along with the oysters got us to the minimum, so our tastings ended up no charge. Good thing! I would have been very vocal if I had paid that much to be completely ignored! All in all, their wines were decent enough, but I'll never go back or order from them again.

We had the opportunity to spend time with Page Knudsen Cowles, whose family helped establish Oregon as one of the world's premier wine regions. She shared the history of her family's vineyard, the realities of running a multi generational business, and how they continue to honor her parents' legacy while moving the winery forward. One of my favorite moments was ending our visit with a private lunch in the beautiful cabin her father built for her mother, a place that now welcomes wine club members. Sitting there while hearing their family's story made us feel like we had been invited into something very special. Between the breathtaking vineyard views, wonderful wines, warm hospitality, yoga overlooking the vines, hiking the property, and the incredible personal stories, this was so much more than a winery visit. It was so fun to actually talk to the wife, a partner of the Man and Woman Duo who are involved in every step of the winemaking process. I ended up buying a Rose and a Gamay Noir, one of my least favorite varietals, that somehow worked. Back to Saffron Fields, it's a very nice tasting room with plenty of indoor/outdoor seating with lawn games for kids and adults. I believe the owner's artwork is all over the walls and you could spend time wandering around taking it all in. They also have live music events that I went to last year so they pretty much have something for everyone.

It's quite magical - from the intriguing artwork to the gorgeous garden - it's a place to settle into and take a moment to enjoy wine and nature. In March 2025 they offered complimentary wine tasting that specific month. I think each month they have a special event or a special offering. In March we did buy a bottle of their wine to take home after our tasting. They also serve small snack platters which pair excellent with the wine. We ordered one and it was deliciously fantastic. In the spring they had yard games and in the winter they have a cozy fire pit. Right now in November/December 2025 they are offering tickets on select Saturdays to come to their special holiday night light show. I went last Saturday. They had S'mores, mulled wine, hot chocolate, and hot fresh apple cider. The gardens dazzled with music and lights. I had two s'mores and a little cup of each drink. The cider and hot chocolate brought back childhood nostalgia and hit the spot. Tickets are required, but the first weekend was free unless you did wine tasting or buy wine by the glass. It was very magical. Everyone was friendly and full of holiday cheer. The gardens were beautiful to walk. I took my elderly parents. My mother recently experienced a bad head injury so my parents opted not to drink. I tried a small taste of the mulled wine, but it was too strong for me. I made an Instagram reel of my experience besides this review. I hope others can come out and enjoy the magic of this place too. I definitely will come back. I hope they offer more food and events. That really raises the bar and makes them the best winery in Yamhill Wine Country.

Nestled in the beautiful Oregon wine country, this estate offered a truly delightful experience that exceeded my expectations. Chris James Cellars has two tasting locations: one in McMinnville and another on the estate in Carlton. We opted for the estate location on a nice sunny day. Our host, Dustin, was exceptionally inviting, knowledgeable, and attentive. Dustin's expertise in explaining the nuances of the grapes, the terroir, and the winemaker's journey added a rich layer of depth to our tasting. His captivating storytelling deepened my appreciation for this winery. The estate has both indoor and outdoor seating options. While the indoor area is rather limited, the outdoor seating is spacious and beautiful. Overlooking the vineyard and surrounding nature, it's the perfect spot to relax, especially on a sunny day. The serene ambiance of the vineyard enhances the overall tasting experience. They offer snacks for an extra purchase, but you can also bring your own food to enjoy with the tasting, making it feel like the best picnic ever. I went with a group of eight people, and the spacious outdoor seating, generous tasting pours, and excellent selection made everything perfect. During our visit, we had the opportunity to sample a wide array of wines. Each wine we tasted was unique and delicious, showcasing the winery's commitment to quality and variety. Many of their wines use neutral oak barrels for fermentation, allowing a well-rounded balance between the fruitiness of the berries and the subtle oak aromas. Chris James Cellars is known for its diverse varietals, which is quite refreshing in an Oregon dominated by Pinot and Chardonnay. We also spotted many different grapes native to Italy, influenced by the winemaker's family's origin. Every wine we tried was distinctive and flavorful, making it hard to pick a favorite. We ended up buying a bottle of Lagrein, a wine native to northern Italy that I had never tried or heard of before.
