Dr. Berkley is the absolute BEST! Totally present, caring, great listener and VERY thorough. It's a pleasure to see a truly caring doctor! His office was also very attentive and professional! read more

Dr. Berkley was GREAT from the start--he saw me on short notice for severe lower back pain and listened carefully to understand my symptoms. He thought my symptoms could stem from multiple causes and offered a thoughtful, comprehensive treatment plan. He and his office staff guided me through the process for a radiculopathy ablation, and after the procedure I was impressed by how effective it was, almost immediately. His care has significantly reduced my pain and improved my daily life. read more

Couldn't have had a better experience than I did with Dr. Berkley. He was empathetic, confident, and smart. He took a great deal of time to understand my symptoms, and tailored a plan of action that was the right choice for me. Had a subsequent procedure done by him which was just as flawless and professional as he was in the office. His team moved mountains to make this work in my schedule and with my insurance, and I couldn't be more grateful. I will definitely go back to Dr. Berkley and his team for all my back needs in the future. read more

I have had a pain in my left side. My previous doctor said it was coming from my back. Every step with my left foot I felt a twinge and sometimes pain in my hip at night. The other doctor gave me a coddle twice in my spine and neither time worked. When I went in for another shot my new doctor Dr. Berkley listened to my story and then put me through some motions on my left leg. He changed the plan for the shot. It was my left sacroiliac the pain was coming from. He was correct. No more pain!!! read more

I too read all these reviews and wondered if I had been recommended to the right pain specialist. I hadn't met Dr. Berkley until right before going into the treatment room for an injection. I feel compelled to tell you all that it couldn't have been a more perfect experience with Dr. Berkley himself and his nurses. He performs his injections in a building across from Cedar Sinai. I worried at first, because I really didn't see his suite number listed on the directory and it was a bit hard to find on the second floor. When you first walk into the reception area. It's not very impressive. And his 2 Receptionists, although were efficient and checked me in quickly, they were loud and gossipy, and while you were sitting in the waiting room, you just wondered if you had chosen the right place. But once you are inside, his nurses were spectacular. They were efficient and caring and comforting. They couldn't have been any nicer prepping you for your injections. Then I met Dr. Berkley. He knew exactly who I was, and who referred me, all about my case and my issues, and what he was going to do to help. I found him incredibly warm and lovely and I was 100% confident going into that injection that he knew what he was doing and that hopefully we were on the right track. His operating nurses were just as lovely and off to sleepy land I went. Dr Berkley even checked on me on the way out to see if there was any immediate improvement, which there was. Fingers crossed that it lasts. The whole procedure from check in to check out was just a little over an hour. I don't know if I'm completely pain-free, but I do know that I would not hesitate in the least going back to see Dr. Berkley. read more

Very Hard to get a hold of the lady to make an appt for a shot. Never returned calls. I finally did make an appt and it was about hour and 30 min away in west hills on a Friday traffic. Not close to cedars. They don't tell you that until later. read more

I was referred to Dr Berkley by Dr John Itamura, who replaced my shoulder and is one of the great surgeons we have in Los Angeles. Dr Itamura is incredible. I have an impinged nerve issue that is affecting my left arm, Dr Itamura replaced my left shoulder four years ago. My shoulder replacement is not the cause of my discomfort in my left arm. I was looking forward to my meeting and exam with Dr Berkley, hoping for some relief from the pain and discomfort I have been experiencing. My appointment was the first opening Dr Berkley had, 2pm this Thursday. I had to travel a ways to get there, and unfortunately I arrived at 2:08. The check-in attendant informed me that my appointment had been cancelled because I was late. He politely asked if I had any interest in rescheduling. I gave him a curt answer, no. This POS arrogant SOB doctor clearly is not in practice to help people. He clearly works for his own convenience and profit. There is no way this doctor cares for any of his patients given his treatment of people. Frankly, doctors take a Hippocratic oath, and Dr. Berkley spits on that oath. I wouldn't trust him to care for anyone. read more

I had a nice experience here, I found Dr. Berkley to be very caring and genuine and his methods are working for me! Honestly he's been a Godsend. I'm very happy with my experiences! read more

Dr. Berkley appears skilled in his field of epidurals and neurology. However, he deeply lacks skill in bedside manner. I totally agree with the other four reviewers regarding his arrogance and offensive bedside manner. His receptionist tells you the doctor demands the patient arrive on time and states quite impolitely that Dr. Berkley's protocol is, "If you are late, he will not see you regardless of the excuse or your physical condition." When entering the surgical suite one of the two receptionists did not have her mask on. This is not professional protocol for a surgical center! She told me that needed to take a break from wearing it. I was scheduled for two epidurals. While waiting for the treatment day, I injured my neck and experienced acute pain. Dr. Berkley sent me for an MRI and scheduled a third epidural. At the surgical center, already gowned, vulnerable, and in lots of pain, the doctor walked in and said he could not give me the epidural for the neck. When I asked, "Why?" he mumbled that the insurance company did not approve it. I told him I would pay cash for it, and he bluntly replied he would not do it with no explanation. Dr. Berkley left the room only to return shortly to say procedure had been approved on an emergency basis, but I should expect the insurance company to come after me for the money. He suddenly became quite angry, yelled, and flung his arm towards the door and stated: "I should send you home!" He stated that I bother him and his PA, and now the nurse? Being screamed at by a doctor in front of other patients and staff is a violation of my personal and his professional boundaries. He was vulgar. At this point I became very quiet--not because I was afraid of him--but because I needed the pain relief from his procedure. This in a room with staff and other patients in pain. His display of temper and anger was 100% inexcusable. I wonder, with great thought, if he would have demonstrated his chauvinism, horrible bedside manner, no empathy for someone's pain, intolerance, and misogyny with a man! NO!!! Furthermore, it was clear in his yelling that he has discussed my confidential doctor client privilege with his colleagues (PA), which made me feel shameful and embarrassed. I am aware that doctors and their PA's discuss medical information about my condition. Anything said between doctor and his PA should not be blurted out in a crowded room with many other patients, nurses and staff. The PA obviously "tattled" to him about my disappointment having to wait so very long, and he violated my confidentiality with her and told me that I upset her? A pain management specialist needs to create a safe, nurturing environment. Everyone who enters is already compromised by severe pain. Dr. Berkley's demeanor, behavior, and inflexible confrontational manner is incongruent with the Hippocratic Oath. I agree with at least four other reviewers on Yelp, Peggy L., Brad P., JW, and Steven K. I would never recommend him to someone in pain. NO ONE DESERVES TO BE TREATED WITH SUCH TOXIC ABUSE!!!!!! Dr. Berkley went above and beyond what I would expect a doctor to do for his patients. The level of care and concern he has for his patients is like nothing I have experienced before. After reviewing my MRI results, we discussed that I needed to have surgery. He understood the pain I was in and how this was effecting my daily life. I had a consult with the surgeon in 3 week but he didn't want me to wait that long. He called the surgeon while in the exam room and got me in that day. Dr. Berkley didn't just hand me off to the next doctor. He continued to communicate with me and he was there to answer all of my questions after my appointment and after surgery. I couldn't recommend Dr. Berkley more. read more

I was under the care of a doctor before having Dr. Berkley. My pain was not controlled and also was getting worst. She was not listening to me. She said nothing was seen in the X-ray. I requested MRI, because my pain was telling me there was something wrong but she told me it wasn't necessary. Then, she was on break and I was seen by her NP and I demanded an MRI. Sure enough, I have rotator cuff tear in three different places. The office visits wait was hours and she will just see me for a minute or two and was not giving me the chance to say what I needed to say. I called my case manager and demanded to be referred to another MD. Having Dr. Berkley is the best thing that ever happened to me. He just listened to my complaints and it didn't take him that long to figure out the care that I needed to get better. He referred me to Dr. Stone and had my surgery. Dr. Berkley has been collaborating well with Dr. Stone. I can't thank Dr. Berkley enough for the care he has provided me for my recovery. Thank you so much Dr. Berkley for your extraordinary care. read more

I would not hesitate for a second to recommend this doctor!! He's cordial, up lifting and as caring as any person can be. I chose not to have sedation for my epidural and got a little scared going in and he very intuitively supported me during the procedure allowing me to relax and everything went smoothly. This is what a real doctor is all about. Caring! His staff has the highest integrity and respect for him and they worked in perfect synchronicity which I find is a key indication of an A-list physician. My procedure actually went better than anticipated. He delivered my injection to the precise location which is paramount to the successful outcome of this procedure. If you are having chronic back pain, don't wait, call his office now. He's a good guy! read more

If you have insurance, you cannot go to Dr. Berkley unless you want to be double billed an exorbitant amount by Cedars Sinai. Another reviewer had mentioned that he had received a bill from Cedars. When I called to make an appointment, I asked about that, and I was told that wouldn't "be a problem". Well, it became a very big problem. I had 4 simple trigger point injections in my back, they were not even cortisone injections. Dr. Berkley's bill was fair. I owed him a little over $200. I had had trigger point injections with him a few years in the past, and that was about what I expected. To clarify further, Dr. Berkley states he "has nothing to do with Cedars, he is a private doctor". I was not seen at Cedars hospital, only in Dr. Berkley's private office on San Vicente, which is a Cedars owned building. So, Cedars charged my insurance for 5 surgeries, at a cost of over $4000. As per Blue Shield, my portion is over $3800. I tried many times to rectify this by appealing the decision and emailing Dr. Berkley. This is where I saw what others have spoken about. Dr. Berkley became belligerent and nasty. He has no concern that his leasing agreement can cause his patients to be over billed. I feel like I was duped by their office. Beware. If I had been given proper information by his office, I never would have went there. read more

as a patient of Dr Berkley's for nearly 8 years I can't stress enough how good of a doctor he is and how fortunate I am to have been referred to him. From the respect he has for his patients, wealth of knowledge, expertise and patience coupled with a capacity to listen in detail, he truly is a god send. Prior to Dr Berkley, I would have to use walker and was bed ridden for at least a week out of every month. my quality of life was slipping through my hands and without his treatments and guidance, I would most likely be in a wheelchair today. I have ankylosing spondylitis and yes there is torturous physical therapy at times, and a high level of patient responsibility required for playing an active role in helping my condition but I could not be in better hands if I tried. he is an amazing doctor and i would not pay any attention to the negative reviews. here's the thing, if you're looking for a doctor that will simply prescribe pain pills for you, he is not your doctor. I appreciate and support his high level of ethics and standards and trust him explicitly with my health. read more

Dr. Berkley is a really great doctor and gave his personal attention to me before I even showed up to see him. In this CV19 and civil unrest and looting, we had to cancel our appointments twice and we personally talked on the phone about the new appointment and what to expect. I made it to his office waited about 5 minutes and immediately after was greeted by him personally. I was there for some test but he was able to give me a diagnosis for what was bothering me and the source of my pain, this was after I had three surgeries by the best surgeons in LA and they couldn't think out of the box and figure it out. It's totally refreshing to know there is finally someone that can see the big picture of someone's health and not just focus on what they specialize in. Thanks Doctor! read more

PLEASE find another doctor . Dr. Berkley and the front office are unprofessional , unresponsive and rude. The day after a procedure I called multiple times for my follow up appointment . Never received call backs had to keep calling, Bernice who heads up the office is rude and curt , she acts annoyed when you call after the doctor asked me to call the office. Finally got a follow up appointment after they called and the doctor cancelled appointments at the last minute to go on vacation . This has happened twice during my care , and always the evening before or day of the appointment. The doctor , as other reviews have stated, has zero bedside manner . First, I went to visit Dr. Leonel Hunt at CS, in my experience is the best spine surgeons in the world, he performed surgery on my L4 and L5 cause I had a small tumor in a nerve that other local doctors could not see in the MRI, and had offer other "crazy" suggestion and maybe find the cause for my pain. Dr. Hunt took my pain away in 2011. I was able to walk and pain free until 2016 when I fell on black ice and hurt my back again and up until 2 days ago I endured the pain because I couldn't make the trip earlier to go visit him again. (I should tell you that I had to go from Eastern Washington State, to So. Cal. more horrendous pain on the airplane) once in the examining room Dr. Leonel Hunt, comes in and acts like I am the only existing person in the world, understand my pain, suggest what and when we need to do. I proceeded to let him know that am flying home the next day, mind you this a three thirty p.m appointment. Dr. Hunt paused for a second, left the room and comes back with Dr. Berkley who had kindly accepted to give me a shot on my back at 6:00 am. I understand Dr. Berkley doesn't do shots but on Fridays but Dr. Berkley went out of his way to help me out. Dr. Berkley was very professional, calmed down, explained what, how and why he was going to do, as I was worried that this shots would not work again done by other drs. Where do I begin?! I've been trying to find answers for years as to why I (an otherwise healthy mom of 2) have had such problems with my back + joints etc. I honestly thought I was just going crazy, as it didn't seem there was an answer. Then I met Dr. Berkley. **Before I say anything else, I will say that I don't think everyone will adore him. I think he is very straight forward, little fluff and fairly blunt. HOWEVER, one must evaluate what's most important in their healthcare and that varies person to person. Personally, I've had wonderful doctors that are very warm and fuzzy-- but I'm usually waiting for them for 30+minutes after my appt time among other issues I dislike. I enjoy that Dr. Berkley comes in, addresses the problem, offers a solution (or solutions), gives you choices and then allows you to proceed as you see fit. I think it's one of those things that some people like and others don't.** Now back to what I love about him! I think he is one of those doctors that doesn't "over-doctor" and offers true solutions that will help your problem. I feel he is extremely intelligent and definitely offers solutions that fit your lifestyle (ie. mom of 2, still nursing, etc.). I also feel he is fair and offers unbiased information to help you determine what is best for you. Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with him and he's made my unpleasant situation more pleasant if that's even possible. read more

Simply the best. You can't understand how good he is until you have had an opportunity to use him as your doctor.

Dr Berkley is a remarkably good diagnostician. As to epidurals and steriod injections having to be absolutely precise to achieve benefit, he nailed it. For that, I truly appreciate him. When it comes to Dr Berkley's bedside manner, not so much. When you see a pain management specialist, safe space is essential. In his interactions with me, it was nonexistent. I left his office feeling as though I'd been shamed and judged. His demeanor was much the same when he entered a procedure room being confrontational with me, as I was face down on the table wearing only socks with at least 3 others in the room. I appreciate him for diagnosing the problem and explaining what the next step is. He doesn't do the procedure, and I'm good with moving on. read more

Dr. Berkley is more concerned with his own personal time then he is with caring for patients. I made an appointment with him over a month ago and his office gave me directions to his office on 444 San Vicente. I showed up at his office and his staff informed me he wasn't in today and that I didn't have an appointment. I went back and forth with them and showed them an email verifying my appointment. The receptionist looked at the email and said I need to go to another office where he works on Mondays. I told the receptionist to call over to his other office and let them know that I was leaving there and heading over to his other office. I arrived at his other office 20 minutes late to my appointment. The receptionist told the Doctor I was there but he told his receptionist to tell me that because I was late he wouldn't see me. I told her to explain to the Doctor that I was only late because his staff gave me directions to the office he wasn't working at that day and if I would've been given the proper location I wouldn't of been late and also said let him know that his other office was suppose to call over and let him know what happened. They didn't. I said let him know that I was willing to wait and whenever he could fit me in I'd wait there for him. A minute later he came walking out to the waiting room and basically said that because I was late he wouldn't see me. I tried to explain to him that it was because of his staff that I was late. He wanted no part of that. Told me he called me numerous times to see where I was which he didn't. I tried to say his other office was suppose to call over and let them know what happened. He just cut me off. Not to mention he did this in front of other patients in the waiting room. I was a bit embarrassed. Not too professional of him. I offered to wait but he said make another appointment. He was to concerned with his time rather then treat a patient regardless of the fact I said I'd wait for him. He needs to get his priorities straight. read more

I'm really bothered that I am taking time out of my day to write this, but Writing this complaint is worth it if it helps someone else. Because I am not the patient I am not going to get into details about the health issues of the patient who is my Mother. My mother see's other Doctors at this location and was referred to consult a Neurologist. It was convenient to see Dr. Berkley because he is in the same building as her referring Doctor who we highly respect. The whole building is beautiful, and the office staff is great. Regretfully our visit with this waste of degree doctor was an upsetting experience. He was all smiles and pretended to care until we started asking about procedures that might not be covered by Medicare. He suddenly changed his demeanor like he wasn't seeing dollar signs anymore. Money is not an issue, but I'd like to know if I am paying for something upfront and not be surprised with a bill later. He walked out of the room and we could hear him speaking to someone vulgarly kept saying I didn't tell her to come see me! My mother and I have manners and would like to continue her care at this building for the other providers who provide excellent care so when this being came back in the room we said we would think about further tests and get back to his office at a later time; he quickly and arrogantly said sure and left the room. I cannot begin to explain the disappointment that both my Mother I felt for a grown man who's lives depend on his care would behave in such a way. We are fortunate and wealthy a "non-covered" service is not a problem to us. But what about patients who cannot afford it? Is this what they should expect? Who with a medical license behaves this way? Please do yourself a favor and go see another doctor! read more

I found Dr. Berkley to be arrogant, rude and lacking in bedside manner. I felt like a dollar sign and not like a person in pain looking for a release from my discomfort. I went to Dr. Berkley for trigger point Marcaine injections into my neck for painful muscle spasms. I discussed with Dr. Berkley that my former doctor (who passed away) would inject directly into the inflamed muscle with Marcaine causing the muscles spasms to go away instantly thus taking the pain away and giving me instant relief. Dr. Berkley agreed to do the injections as I requested. He hurriedly injected into my neck, missing the spasms and I got no relief from the horrible pain in my neck. I asked the doctor to please inject into the muscles spasms that were causing me great pain and in a very rude, uncaring manner said he was done and dismissed my request and me. He stated that I needed an EMG nerve conduction study that he would do at another time. My first question was "how much would this hurt? Dr. Berkley's response was "it's uncomfortable." According to Google the definition of uncomfortable: "Causing or feeling slight pain or physical discomfort. Athlete's foot is a painful and uncomfortable condition." I went in to see Dr. Berkley at his other offer for the study. As I laid on the treatment table he attached tape on my arm. Without another word or warning he electrocuted my hand. My whole body went into convulsion and tears were coming out of my eyes. He then shouted at me, "Don't move and stay still!" I tried to do as instructed and he again electrocuted my hand and yelled at me to "stay still." He told me that he had this test and it did not hurt that much. With tears streaming down my face I told him I could not take any more and left. I gave the doctor one star for his nice nurses and office staff along with the beautiful view from the office. Yesterday I had the test repeated by the very lovely and kind Dr. Lisa Cook at her office. I was taken into a very warm treatment room. I asked why it was so warm and was told that for best results, muscles must be warm before testing. Dr. Cook came into the room and introduced herself. Her staff member, Emma did my EMG nerve conduction study. Before she began she completely informed me of what to expect, how the test would be done and asked if I had any questions before beginning the test. I told her of the horrible, painful experience I had with Dr. Berkley. Emma carefully began with a low intense shock on my arm using a gel as a conductor (that I don't recall Dr. Berkley using) and gently pressed the device on my skin rather than hammering it into my open hand as Dr. Berkley had done. She then stopped and asked if I was doing OK and then completed the test. I was treated with kindness and like a human being. After this part of the test was completed Dr. Cook came in and did the rest of the testing, sticking a needle into the muscles on my arm using the same electrical testing device. Yes, it's true this test was uncomfortable but not excruciatingly painful as when Dr. Berkley did the same test. I am very grateful to Dr. Cook and her office staff for their compassionate and kind care. read more

I was having debilitating pain in my hip area and was sent to a hip doctor who recommended hip surgery. Upon going for a second opinion that Hip Doctor determined it was not my hip but my back and referred me to Dr. Jason Berkeley at Cedar Sinai Spine Institute. My MRI showed several problems including 3 discs sitting on top of each other, so diagnosing what was causing the most pain was not clear or simple, it required 3 diagnostic procedures ( 2 epidurals and 1 cortisone shot) and patience to figure out that the severe pain was being cause by the SI joint on my right side. Apparently this is often misdiagnosed, as I did my own research on the net and it was confirmed to me. Dr, Berkeley was exceedingly patient, informative and sympathetic to the pain I was in. He explained to me the need to determine what was causing the pain so he knew what steps to take and what procedures would offer the best results. He did not want me to have back surgery if it could be avoided. I agreed with him. Once the diagnosis of the SI joint was clear he did a procedure known as a Rhizotomy. This did the trick! Between that procedure and PEMF treatments and my morning lower back exercises I am thrilled to report that I am pain free and I no longer need back surgery, at least at this time. I still have the discs sitting on top of one another but the pain in my leg is gone and completely and lower back pain is negligible. Bravo Dr Berkeley, he did a great job for me. He is one of those doctors that spends as much time with you as is necessary to really listen and hear your problems. You are a person to him, not just a patient. Madeline Drake, LA, CA read more

I have seen Dr. Berkley on several occasions for my chronic lumbar pain and spasm (thank you, U.S. Navy) that had not been relieved with over the counter medications and rest. Unlike some previous physicians I had encountered who made you wait for hours and visited with you for only 2 minutes, Dr. Berkley was prompt with his start time, sat patiently and listened to all of my complaints and concerns. My diagnosis was simple and the treatment he recommended helped immeasurably with my symptoms. I am thankful to Dr. Berkley for helping to give me the tools I needed to defeat my lower back pain symptoms and get on living my life as normal as possible!
