Having arrived in Melton Mowbray for a weekend wedding, we had high hopes that this area was going to be a bit of a foodie paradise - after all the famous and humble pork pie is from here! Also - when I booked our hotel 5 months ago, I imagined that it was going to be a lovely spring evening where we'd maybe be sipping a big jug of Pimms in the sun before a tasty pub dinner - unfortunately with a face full of wind and rain it was clear I was wrong on pretty much all points!
We tried to get into the recommended and nice looking Anne of Cleves but with this full it was up to us to walk around aimlessly as we surveyed most local foodie establishments to find a winner (or runner up I guess) with each plane looking a bit meh...
In the end we thought why not just for a Chinese and while there was nothing wrong with it, it was pretty bog standard. I'm thinking that they want to appear greater than the sum of it's parts by offering more and exciting options than the usual places by offering Malaysian and Japanese dishes but put it this way - my seafood Rendang I'm pretty sure also doubles up as sweet and sour seafood, seafood in OK sauce, seafood curry etc... I've had many Rendang's over the years and this people was not a Rendang!
The spicy squid to start was ok but nothing particularly special and with the meal coming to £45 with a tip and 2 beers it was quite overpriced.
Not a bad option in MM but it is what it is. read more
