This is such an adorable kids consignment store in the East Village not too far from union square. They had lots of wonderful baby books, clothes and shoes and had a large collection of Lovevery toys for sale (and other high quality wooden montesorri toys). When we lived over on Clinton St we used to visit Jane's Exchange at least once a week, sometimes more. It was, and still is, the best kids consignment shop I've ever been to. Eva has since retired and now Jane is running things and it's still chock full of amazing clothing (for mom too!), toys, and books. I've been coming to Jane's Exchange for a couple of years now, whenever I visit the city. It is a treasure trove for maternity clothing, baby supplies, and toys and clothes. Like any thrift/consignment store, it's pure luck if you find things you like when you're there-- but if you don't, try again next week! The store is very well curated. In my limited experience, the selection of toys and books is always better than the selection of boy clothes... I found a couple cute items when my son was in baby sizes, but not a lot. Toddler boy selection is limited. Wish they had more-- but I know it completely depends on what gets turned in, and little boys destroy their clothes so they probably don't get a lot! This is a little treasure shop. I stumbled upon this when I was taking my granddaughter for a walk in her stroller about 3 months ago. I'm a huge recycle/reuse fan so I'm always looking for new places to give my business to. And babies grow out of their clothes so fast, it makes sense to pass them along to others. So many clothes in great condition. And I specifically went in to find my granddaughter a toy car or truck. The perfect one was in the back room just waiting for us to claim it. While browsing this store, the woman who works there complimented my daughter and then, began a long and loud conversation with a woman who seemed to be a friend (she wasn't shopping nor was she an employee,) deriding a customer who "frequently comes in" for raising an adopted daughter despite being a gay man. There was much head shaking and "what is the world coming to?" I'm not sure if she is the owner, or an employee, but every time I've been in she's been there, so suffice it to say she's a significant part of the experience. On an occasion before that, I witnessed an eccentric and very elderly woman come in to purchase an item of (baby) clothing for her dog. From their conversation it was clear she was a frequent shopper. She had trouble getting her money out of her purse and dropped it on the floor. As she gathered it up the best she could, she talked about her dog as though she were a baby. Rather than have compassion, the woman behind the counter made a big show of sighing and rolling her eyes when the elderly woman left. This woman is, in my view, a judgmental and mean-spirited person who levels her hostility onto the very people patronizing the store. I suspect why this store is such a mess, with so many low quality and heavily used items (as opposed to the much nicer stock at baby re-sale shop Clementine) is also this woman's laziness. I heard her telling a customer it would be months before she could "take a look at" her consignment donations, yet store is overflowing with worn out plastic toys and faded clothing. Why not be more discerning in what she takes in, and be more timely in sorting through new possible donations? The answer, I suspect, is simple laziness. It's a shame because the store is conveniently located for me, and I deeply subscribe to concept of re-selling children's clothing and toys, however I won't shop at this business because of this unpleasant and mean-spirited person. read more

I happened to come across this lovely shop when we were going to a restaurant nearby. Since I wanted to get something for my friends who really enjoys consignment shops and its offerings, I decided to check it out. I was pleasantly surprised by its selections and quality of the merchandise, and quickly found so many adorable clothes for my friend's baby boy. Not only they had many clothing items, but also shoes, books, toys, and everything else you can think of. The owner/manager lady was super friendly and helpful as well, pointing out to a bin that had Summer clothes for discounted price. Speaking of price, they were all very great low prices! So the discounted one was even more super. Since we had a restaurant reservation, we kind of hurried out of there, but I really wish if we had more time... My friend who received the clothes were super happy and excited, I can't wait to go back for some more cute little clothes for her kids! It is such a great way to recycle gently used clothes and everything else, allowing all the kids out there to share them with each other, even though they might not even realize it. Kinder to Earth, more happy smiles on kids face. It can't get any better than that! I wish if there are more of these kind of store... Sad news is that they will only be opened for another 2 years from the owner/manager told me. So, if you have something you want to recycle, or if you are looking for a gently used items, get there before they close forever!!! read more

My kid grows at an alarming rate and I don't have family or friends with stores of hand-me-downs. Jane's Exchange is one of the only things in the world making parenthood feasible for us. A huge selection for kids of all ages, affordable and fair prices, all the essentials and then some extremely special things in the mix... I've been to the secondhand stores in Brooklyn, some of which are lovely, but all of which are smaller (vastly smaller selection) and more expensive. We came back with over 15 items of clothing and shoes (none of which were H&M, Zara or Target's house brand) for under $100. Jane let us help ourselves to socks on the house. Given how completely insane keeping track of baby socks is, we did not take this kindness lightly. Thank every and any deity for Jane's Exchange, an East Village institution. Everyone who works there is also super cool, including but not limited to the Jane for whom the establishment is named. read more

I love this store. I always come here for presents for my nephew and nieces. They always have amazing and unique stuff. And Jane is the greatest. Truly the friendliest shopkeeper in the East Village. Jane's Exchange has been central to my life as a parent in NYC. I'm honestly kinda melancholy that my kids have outgrown it! I bought pretty much all their clothes there (including some super-fancy designer duds for a song), as well as books, toys, ice skates, and maternity stuff for me. When my oldest was a newborn, Jane's Exchange was the first place I ever breastfed in public. Whenever I was pregnant or out and about with a little kid, it was always a friendly place to use the bathroom without getting the side-eye. When it was raining or freezing, it was a fun place for the kids to play with the train set and toy kitchen. It's just such a sweet, soulful shop -- it really feels like a remnant of the neighborly, slightly scruffy East Village of years past. It's an institution! May it live forever! read more

What can I say about this place..? They been open for 13 plus years my sister and brother would buy things that they need here for there kids and now I come here when ever I get the chance to see and buy whatever I need to get for my now 2 year old daughter. I've gotten a sound machine, clothing, books, my wife has gotten maternity clothes, and now toys. I love this place and it's great place if your in a pinch and in need of anything bottles, bibs, a jacket for the winter and last minute gift ideas they got. This is the kind of store that New York is losing...where you know the people who own and run it, and the value is great. Especially when your kids are little! All parents know that there are those things you pay a mint for use it for 3 months and now you don't need it anymore. And your children grow too fast! You need stuff right now! Jane's Exchange has been a godsend both for buying and consigning for us for 6 years, since my daughter went to school close by. We have bought and consigned clothes, scooters, wooden toys, books, ice-skates, toddler furniture...you name it. I am jealous of those that know about this gem during those expensive early years; pre- and post-pregnancy stuff, for babies and moms! I love what Eve and Yelena are doing now - which is a newsletter that tells what they have and what they want. We have far less stuff to rotate through them now because my daughter has hit the tween years, but we still stop in when we are in the neighborhood. Best of the Best Great place to get moderately to down right steals on cool baby to toddler clothes, gadgets, strollers, carriers, Toys and whatever else you might need or want for your kid. The owners are super responsive and helpful as they can be. When in a rush I've walked in saying I need shorts & shirts and they picked out six pieces that are not only reasonably priced and really cool high quality. Weekends the place can be packed so don't expect so much hand holding then. Go with a list. Keep in mind the owners have to deal with so many kids in all different states of mental states. Thankfully there is a play area with train set and bouncer that my kid enjoys. Changing diapers is of course allowed and I always find the fellow customers, gay or straight, really cool, helpful and friendly. Safe to say my kid wears 85% of his clothes from Jane's Exchange. I started shopping here when I was pregnant with my first son. My boys are now 7 and 9 and we just today dropped off fall clothes for consignment and bought a pair of baseball cleats, much needed pants, and a book about folding paper airplanes. We've been repeating this similar cycle every season since they were born. Jane's Exchange is a community GEM. It is part of the fabric of our neighborhood. I can't tell you what a special part it's been of parenthood and my sons' childhoods. Baby and kid furniture, toys, books, clothes,...so many favorite memories were purchased there and for so little money (and when can you say that in Manhattan?)! And really, it was respite so many afternoons as an exhausted parent driven insane by being trapped indoors in the winter. The babies could play with the kitchen and train set and I could chat with the owners, Gail and Eva, about politics, parenthood, and community. Good to see the store back in business! I stopped by and got 3 beautiful summer dresses, two hats, a Hape wooden toy and books! Everything on mint condition and absolutely great quality, they made my one year old very happy. I am a big amazon addict when it comes to things for my daughter, but I actually do miss going to retail stores, and this shop felt so cozy and organized. In regards to COVID it felt pretty safe, they do have a bin where you can locate the things you pick so you're not walking around with a bunch of items around the store, everybody was wearing masks and surprisingly enough keeping distance. Hand sanitizer was available too. Please give this spot a visit, all the good businesses that make the East village special, should be preserved and we have that power! read more

I love both locations of this delightful store. I've been coming to the East Village location for ... jeez, 8 years now?! I peeked into the new Park Slope location the other day, and it was so well stocked, beautifully designed and made for a pleasurable shopping experience. Consigning is good for the environment as we all know, and it's good for your pocket book too! Most importantly - you're supporting an independent (female owned!!) business, and you and your kid(s) will have fun picking unique items that really speak to their style vs wearing what everyone else is wearing. I really would like to like you. The premise behind this store is amazing, and I would love to support the local business but I am turned off everytime I go in. I found all the items to be WAY over-priced considering the condition of much of the stuff. The woman that generally runs the place is always correcting my son and seems SO afraid that he is going to break some of her broken toys. Yikes - I don't feel a warm welcoming vibe here AT ALL! I have so many NEW items I would just donate if it truly was a store that provided affordable items to our community and to families that struggle. I just don't see that. The owner is a nice lady, the clothes selection is also big, but most of the items are old, so i wouldn't buy any of them for my kid. If you decide to cell your stuff i would prefer craigslist or eBay, or just give it away to Salvation Army. The owner rip you off completely. I brought in few items and even though they only give you 30% i got nothing. Items i brought were practically new. Before last pick up i called and checked my balance, they also said they couldn't find some of my items. When i arrived to the store owner said that "lost" items were sold but the balance was exactly the same. This store is a good idea, i wish it was handles more fair and honest. You never know how much your items sold for, they just give you the number and lie about your items being sold. Not nice. read more

Talk about changes. I used to party in this nabe and now I'm buying clothes for my kid. Sheesh! I'd heard of this elusive creature called Jane's Exchange...and living in Brooklyn, it seemed like an awfully far trip to take with a wee one. However, now that he's not so wee, I decided to make the trek. I liked it. I didn't love it. That was disappointing. It has some wicked cool stuff, but I was surprised at how USED a lot of the things were. I guess my idea of "gently used" is different from other people. Anyway, I found a still-tagged Barney's Kids outfit for $14 and a funky cool organic fish shirt for $4 and a funkier, cooler complete outfit for $6. No more will my perfect son have to live in Target clothes! He won't be living in Barney's either, that's for a gift. Shhhhh. Don't tell! The maternity section is bizarre. We saw hippy-trippy long dresses and tent-like mumus. Just come to Chinatown in BK for the mumus! There was a decent jean selection. There was also a really nice sling. The inventory changes all the time, so it's hard to mention certain items. I'll probably head back once a month to check it out. read more

Jane's Exchange is a good thing because face it, baby stuff is expensive and besides a few key items, they are done with stuff relatively quickly. Who wants to deal with selling stuff to weirdos on craiglist? I sure don't! Why buy new when you can buy 'gently used' and santize the crap out of it as soon as you get home and take that money you saved and do nothing, because you have a baby now and you have no life anymore...sorry. Anyway, before you buy new, give Jane's a look. They have an ever changing inventory and the prices are great. I picked up a Bjorn Baby Sitter from there last week for $38. Brand new, they are over $150. It was an older model but the baby didn't even notice! Sucker! If you can't make it down, you can always call to see if they have what you're looking for. read more

I've been here a few times now, and I'm just not sold on it. I've only ever found a few good finds in maternity and baby/toddler stuff, plus I think they're fairly overpriced for the conditions and brands available. Still, I like that they have a play area, except that it seems like a necessity since they don't let kids play with any of the toys for sale (seriously...even kind of raggedy old ones). They're pretty strict about it and staff seem a little uptight for a store selling kids' stuff. I prefer Clementine in Washington Square - similar prices with more variety and more unique finds. read more

Bottom line This is a great place to shop but a terrible place to consign. I felt super disrespected by the owner when I brought in items to possibly consign. I had called the day before and we had had a detailed conversation about what to bring in and when. They are very particular about this, which I get. Except when I got there and started explaining why I was there she looked at me like I had three heads. Clearly she wasn't expecting me. She's looking at me all wide eyed and in disbelief. At some point as I'm explaining that I brought things in and that we had spoken about it, she even says, "well I never would have said that!" Wha?!? I just left. Consigners at the store are all working moms of young kids with very little time and energy. I did my part as a consigner. I made the calls twice (no one responded to my first message) to confirm before shlepping my stuff to work and then to the store after work. I don't have time for this BS. I'm so sorry to say I will never consign there again. read more

The store is a gem! We have been coming here since my kid was a baby and is now beginning kindergarten! Over the years, we have consigned here and have purchased baby gear, games, toys, books, clothes, and shoes. They always have a wonderful selection of well-chosen items and we have never left empty handed. The owners/staff are such lovely people and I always enjoy my time in the store, often spending extra time there just chatting and enjoying perusing. The hardest part about this store is finding amazing things your child has already grown out of! Always happy to support a local business but this place should not be overlooked during COVID and these difficult financial times. I've been coming here since my now 3-year old son was a wee babe! I only wish I knew about it before he was born! I could have stocked my entire nursery here! There are clothes, toys, blankets, books, maternity clothes, slings, strollers, carriers, car seats! The owners are very caring and helpful, and there is a real range of things at different price points - you can find new to almost new items, or gently worn things for a range of styles. As compared to other consignment stores, they really have a lot of inventory and a range of items! When I go, I may not find exactly what I'm looking for, but I will find several good quality items that are too cute to leave behind!
