Last call is 2:30 and we got there around 2pm on a Sunday. We had wait a little for the bar to clear up. It's a very small restaurant with only maybe capacity for 20 people or so. We ordered a sashimi lunch set and a tempura set and man it was such a great deal! My sashimi set includes almost 10 pieces of assorted fish like yellowtail, maguro, salmon, imitation crab (don't care), but hey they put amaebi and toro on my plate too and that was quite a nice surprise! Not only the sashimi was plentiful and amazing, my set also came with the steamed egg, miso soup and some pickled vegetables! The tempura was pretty good too and I liked the fried fish, very flavorful and tender! The sashimi set cost around $220 and the tempura a little less than $200. The prices are reasonable for the portions and the quality! Very great deal! Just come here earlier and be prepared to wait.

One of the waitress approached us and apologized that they were busy and no seats available. She walked around and came back to tell us that there should be seating at 9pm, and so we told her, "no problem, we will be back then." We walked around the block and went to the mall to kill time. When we got back about 8:50pm, we waited another 15 minutes, which was fine. We could tell it was busy and every seat in the place was taken (they had group celebrating a birthday-- they offer birthday cake!) By the time we were seated, half the place was getting up to leave. Every staff member starts their sentence with "I am sorry.." which they have nothing to be sorry for!-- but just could be their way of being polite. The waitress who took our order was an older lady. She's the one who approached us when we first arrived, who seated us, and took our order. Her English was pretty good, with a very thick accent (of course) but you can understand her. If you couldn't she will repeat herself or try to say it in a different way. She offered many great selections!-- including which needs to be dipped into their special soy sauce and regular soy sauce. We had sashimi of: baby tuna, tuna, salmon, sea urchin, yellowtail.. and a few others I can't remember. And one tuna roll. Their wasabi is delicious! Everything is fantastic! They offer coke, sprite, and orange juice, along with different types of alcohol. The staff is always busy, literally hurrying along. They come over and wipe down the soy sauce drops that are on the table. They switch out your plates once they start to look a little too used, and always makes sure your drinking glass is full. One of the best services I've ever had! I did have to ask for the check, but maybe they do that so you can enjoy your stay and not feel like you need to leave. Our bill was just a little under $250 USD, but that was expected with all the sushi we had, and just what we were looking for. We highly recommend this place!

The interior of the restaurant is thoughtfully decorated and is also very clean and open. In our most recent visit, we came for lunch. Reservations are highly suggested since this restaurant is in the financial district and is often packed for lunch. To start, the green tea is complimentary and they consistently refill your cup. For food, we started with a salmon sashimi, avocado and softshell crab roll and uni roll to share. The salmon sashimi was served on a bed of ice, which was a nice touch to the presentation. It was really fresh and fatty, almost melting in my mouth. The avocado and softshell crab roll was also delicious. It's crispy and flavorful and I like that there's more filling than rice. The uni roll was unexpectedly disappointing, however. It was not fresh at all and the portion was really small for its price. For our mains, I got an eel rice. I felt that this dish was well executed because the eel sauce tasted delicious but it wasn't over powering. I can definitely still taste the eel, which was fresh, flavorful and succulent. We also got two lunch sets, the assorted tempura set and the beef udon set. These individually come with different items as part of the set lunch, such as miso soup, and/or sashimi and California roll. Overall, a solid place for quality Japanese food. Other than the uni roll, there are no complaints! The service and quality has been pretty consistent over the years, so I'll be coming back whenever I visit Hong Kong!

It's definitely a place for a business lunch or whoever you need to impress because it's a classy place - of course, in the Island Shangri-La. But I felt like I paid for the location and the ambiance more than the actual food, which I am generally not a fan of. The food tasted good, but the value wasn't that good. We're talking about almost $500 (~$60 usd) for a lunch set so it'd better be amazing and unforgettable, right? The sashimi was fresh, but nothing too special. It's good they gave us fresh wasabi, but for this type of place it's pretty much a standard. Their rolled beef slices stuffed with vegetables were delicious but a bit underseasoned. Codfish was good but nothing stood out. Same for the fried rice. It's just when food was put in a cute, small container, and served in a fancy environment, they'll trick our brains to think they taste better, but when I thought about the actual taste, it wasn't anything special. It's cool to see the chef cooking in front of us on the teppan, but he wasn't too friendly and mostly just did his own thing and cook in silence the whole time... The staff didn't check on us regularly. It wasn't easy to track a server down. I'd say overall the food was good but nothing so special that you couldn't find in another Japanese restaurant in HK; and there are so many of them. It's cool we came here for a nice brunch for a special occasion, but I'd be hesitant to come back again especially for the kaiseki - it's a big commitment!

Sushi Kuu is a fairly standard high end Japanese restaurant, of which there are MANY in Hong Kong. It is essentially Hong Kong people's favorite type of cuisine, so it's a really competitive space. The ambiance is quite nice here, so I would recommend it as a place to come after work with colleagues or with an SO or even your family. I've had a lot of things here and most things are pretty good, though fairly pricey, such as the sukiyaki, the sashimi, the sushi, the cod... the cod is probably my favorite. Recently, Sushi Kuu has seen the effects of shrinkflation. For those of you not familiar, this is kind of like inflation, however instead of increasing prices, they keep prices steady but shrink portion size. Personally, I would prefer inflation, but I kind of understand why they do this.

The pork on rice is billed as black Japanese pork chop but is really just deep-fried pork with egg on rice- a staple of any Japanese restaurant. Do yourself a favor and get this dish if it's still available. This is a dish where you'll want to cherish each bite and have it last as long as possible on the tongue. The scallop and ebi were sweet and paired well with the uni. The pastry it was served on provided a nice crunchy texture. KFC Sawagani Crab: Think fried small crabs served in a spicy BBQ sauce. The crabs didn't have much taste aside from the crunch. Smoked BBQ Fish Collar: Fish was hamachi and was very tender. The BBQ flavor was nice but got a bit one note after awhile. I was assuming he would take both of our orders. Then, the majority of the dishes were plated on their own dish so the two of us just ate from the same dish. This wasn't a huge deal but I definitely have never seen that before. It kind of felt like we had ordered for one and were sharing everything. I'm curious what happens if you dine alone here.
