Friends said the breakfast burritos were tasty. The California burrito was good, but there are some spots in SD I would say are superior. Can call ahead for pick up if you don't want to wait. Muy auténtico! This is an old-school meat market with a twist. We've been coming here for years just for their garlic chicken. It's a little different than your typical pollo asada--I actually like it better. They've remodeled recently, so now you can sit down and grab a quick bite. Don't judge, but I went to a Mexican market and had a cheeseburger--wow! The patty was massive and cooked perfectly. Add a Mexican Coke and fries, and it's perfecto. We also did some holiday shopping--chips, salsa, and of course, garlic chicken for the grill. If you're near Jamil, this is a must-stop. Oh, and definitely try the coffee! read more

Truly a hidden gem! I was down in Delzura yesterday with a few friends shooting a couple rounds of trap and once we finished up, we were all extremely hungry and craving some carne asada. One of my buddies looked over to the rest of the group and just stated "I know a place". As we made our way back to the 94, he pulled into a narrow driveway next to a gas station and up a small hill towards a small row of businesses. We walked inside and the layout appeared to be a good use of space. Refrigerators on the left with beverages, cheeses, salsas, etc. A small market on the right and a butcher counter straight ahead. We walked up to look at the menu board and were greeted by a couple of young ladies who inquired what we'd like to order. The first thing I noticed were the prices. The prices were pretty good especially compared to what I've seen in north county. We all ordered our food and situated ourselves at a table right in a middle as we talked and joked about life events and enjoyed each other's company. As another young lady began bringing out our food, I was floored by how large the burritos were especially for the price. I mean, I would say not quite the size of my forearm but might as well have been. As we all tore into our food, the table of loud discussion dropped to a silence as we all enjoyed our food. I typically don't like to admit defeat on a public forum, but that burrito had my number and I ended up taking the last quarter of it home with me. I had never been here before, but I think it definitely made its way to the top of my list for lunch spots in the area when we find ourselves down for trap and range days. It would be really cool if they had a license to sell beer, but the food here is amazing and the service was impeccable. read more

This place is tucked into a corner on your way up to Jamul. They're recently under new ownership and they've remodeled the place a ton. It's a taco shop, meat market and a coffee bar all rolled into one. I had their mini pancakes with nutella, strawberries and bananas and it totally hit the spot for my midday sweet tooth. And they're constantly adding new drinks and experimental items to the menu that all sound yummy! I go here every thursday for $1.50 street taco day from 4-8pm and the adobada is so good! They also put out a complimentary taco topping bar to add whatever you'd like to your street tacos. The family who owns the place is so kind and always offers friendly conversation. Ordered a breakfast burrito. It was supposed to have ham, egg, cheese and potato. There was probably 2 pieces of ham and one egg in the entire burrito. It was mostly potato and cheese. Not worth the $11 price. I didn't even finish it because I'm not trying to carb up. read more

Bottom Line: a little hole in the wall that worth visiting for the carne asada alone. With tons of options for burritos, tacos, and more, with great prices and prompt service, it's a fantastic combo of Mexican grocery, carnecería, and restaurant. The Good: great quality meats (you can even buy and cook at home yourself) and fresh ingredients the whole way. There are also lots of other choices to add to your order (stinks, sauces, etc) since it's connected to a small grocery. The Bad: nothing I can think of that would make me stop going. so, i ordered a beef caldo(soup) and a carne asada burrito and carne asada fries. my caldo was ok, but i had to reheat as it was warm when i picked it up. usually rice is served with the caldo, but i was told that they don't serve it here. first time for me! the soup was kinda bland so i had to season it when i got home. it did have plenty of cabbage and carrots and potatoes and beef. they could have taken some of the fat off the meat. my daughter had the carne asada burrito and said it was ok and that the meat needed some seasoning also. my grandkids had the carne asada fries and said it was ok and have had better at other mexican restaurants. based on this feedback, we probably won't go back unless we are pressed for time, as they are very close to our home. read more

Wow, of COURSE a meat shop would have good food! I drove to Jamul to check out a place for their coffee, found out they were closed, and didn't want my trip to be in vain. Searched for "burrito" and Jamul Meat Market came up. I chose the Garlic Chicken burrito (not traditional, but I choose things I can't get anywhere else) and it was HUGE and delicious. The burrito is as long as your forearm (reference other people's photos, since my burrito is long gone), and that tang of garlic that I like. Cannot wait to go up again to try either a Cali burrito or a carne asada (for comparison purposes). read more

This was my very first time trying out the little taco shop in the Jamul Meat Market. I read all the positive reviews and negatives and it takes a lot for me to be dissatisfied with a place. Here's my experience: I walked into the store and did not hear any greetings or anything, that's fine with me though. What trip me out was that three employees were hanging out in the corner behind the meat display talking and whatever and I stood there looking at them waiting for a little acknowledgment... you would think,"oh look" customer, let's show some customer service. My order was already cooked and sitting on the counter. I mean hey, they did what they had to do but, my first impression at this shop, I felt like there was a little careless vibe. THE FOOD: I ordered Carne Asada fries for my wife and I ordered a California burrito for myself. My wife ended up throwing out the Carne Asada fries because the fries tasted stale, (like it was made yesterday or something) the meat cooked on it was burnt/over cooked and there was hardly any toppings added on the fries sorry but it was truly nasty. I just ate my California burrito, it wasn't as horrible at the carne asada fries but I feel like it was mostly tortilla. It was definitely "quantity over quality". The burrito was huge but the filling wasn't very filling. Sorry guys this one was a bust for me. I really wished it was all I was hoping for and it wasn't. We were in Jamal and wanted taco shop. We found this place. It is a mini grocery with a carnicería. They also have a taco shop inside next to the butcher shop. Not expecting too much, but it wasn't bad. Would I go out of my way for it, no. But, when I'm in Jamal again, I would try it again. read more

Tried this place for the first time today. All in all, very happy. The shop was a bit grimy, but the meat counter was very clean. The burritos ordered were massive & delicious! I enjoyed a California Burrito. Fresh, tender, flavorful. Reasonable prices. The store has a few grocery items, some hard to find elsewhere. I found a bottle of black hot sauce. Some items are pricy, but overall, comparable. The meat market has a nice variety of reasonably priced meat cuts & cheeses. Beef bits not readily found in all grocery stores such as flap steaks & lingua are plentiful. I selected the pre-cut fajitas beef. Nice chunks of beef with chopped tomatoes, green bell peppers, onions, & seasoning. Fresh, beautiful, delicious. The staff is very friendly & helpful. Oh I'll be revisiting Jamul Meat Market for sure & I definitely recommend you stop in. Update 01/02/2018 Wow! What happened? The meat on display was absolutely disgusting. Aging and browning before my eyes. The delightful aroma of raw fish filled the place. The fish looked awful. The chicken was also unappetizing. I left without purchasing a thing. Where to begin with the Jamul Meat Market..... I have been a customer at this establishment for well over 10 years and have yet to be disappointed with anything that I order. Jaime, knows how to treat his customers properly and does a great job at preparing food for all customers. He is currently in the process of training some new cooks and it will take them time to master the art of cooking which Jaime has exemplified day in and day out. With that being said, have some grace with the new people as there are always bumps in the road. Now on to the food.... my go to order is the California Burrito as it is, in my opinion, the best basic (no additions) California in San Diego. That is a bold statement for those native to SD, but I stand by it and will always recommend this place to those in search of a new California Burrito to try out. Total hole in the wall... but aren't those the BEST? I've been to this general store/butcher shop/taco shop a few times since I've moved out to Jamul. I've never personally tried their hot foods served here, but my Dad says they are great. I can however vouch for the butcher counter. I've purchased lean ground hamburger meat, marinated chicken & carne asada, as well as non-marinated carne. The meat is always fresh and absolutely delicious. There is a small cooler at the front counter that has homemade guac and salsas. I bought a tub of the guacamole and my guests destroyed it in like 2.5 seconds. I'll be sure to get at least 2 tubs next time. They also sell hot carrots by the tub in this refrigerated space that are super yummy :) Ill be back soon to try a Breakfast Burrito and hopefully some tamales. The Jamul Meat Market is a thing of legend! It's a teeny hole in the wall that's part butcher part connivence store part taco shop and bout 500% awesome! The owner Jaimé is almost always behing the griddle and makes some of the best burritos in San Diego. His California burrito is a sight to behold and not for the faint of heart... errr, stomach. I usually order a small and it comes out a little bigger than a normal burrito. I have heard rumor of the extra large or triple which comes on a tray and hangs over the edges. Their pre marinated carne asada and pollo asada is very authentic and their chips and roasted salsa is fabulous! Highly recommended. read more

The monster california burrito is rather glorious. I have seen many burritos in my time and the monster is truly a monster. Just be sure to ask for xtra sour cream or guac so it doesnt get dry on you. This burrito is massive and can definitely be shared with 2-3 people.
