Lost in my efforts to select a foot clinic amongst a sea of uninspiring websites, EC Orthotics was a beacon of hope: clean, organized pages; detailed and useful information on services and products offered; and a simple form to request reservations online - I was hooked. These days, a good website is just as important (if not more) than a good storefront. Further, while many other orthotics providers are bundled into larger clinics with chiropractors, physios and masseurs, I was pleased to find a downtown clinic specializing in podiatry alone. Eddie Chan is a young, licensed chiropodist, and is well-versed not only in all-things-feet, but also employee benefits. While this surprised me at first, I appreciate that he realizes the import of employee benefits to his business, and it rounds out his knowledge of podiatry nicely. As the clinic is a bit small, I recommend making an appointment; doing so assures you won't be cramped for space or time. Upon my first assessment, I was impressed when Eddie identified the manufacturer of my previous orthotics by appearance alone. When I asked how he knew, his response was, "poor craftsmanship," as he pointed out the flaws. Point: Eddie. No foam casting boxes here, Mr. Chan utilizes a 3D laser foot scanner to map your paws, which supports his goal of getting your foot into as neutral a position as possible. My previous orthotics provider subscribed to the theory of "bigger is better", so Eddie's more natural approach is a welcome change. After about a week my orthotics were ready for pick-up, and they are indeed top-drawer. Finally, they will help you choose the right style of orthotics to fit your shoe needs; my spousal unit wears a lot of ballet-flats, and this was taken into account. I'm docking half a star because I think EC's selection of prescribed footwear could be improved. While other clinics may offer Birks or Ecco, the catalogue here is limited and should be expanded. Happily though, I was given the opportunity to go full bore on a catalogue of Asics runners; no doubt my squash game will improve (slightly. I hope.) So run, don't walk...well, unless you have foot problems...to EC Orthotics!

Mary is very difficult to deal with. She has no concept of customer service and problem solving. If you get shoes/soles here and ask for the same estimate a year later to get pre-approval from your new insurance, she will not send it to you or let you talk to the Chiropodist, Eddie. After 3 weeks of follow-ups, she will still say pay for an appointment and see the Chiropodist in-person to get the same estimate you got before. No consideration your time or mobility constraints , just wants the money for the appointment at every opportunity.

I then left two or three voicemails and my call was not returned. Finally, I called and reached the person; she was extremely argumentative and justified. I asked for the supervisor and was promised she would call the following day. As you have probably guessed, the supervisor did not call. When the supervisor finally did call, she was defensive, told me how many emergencies she has to handle, that she needs to start work at 7 am, and how she could not possibly return all of her calls. Clearly the receptionist's attitude is a reflection of the culture at the school. I would have expected some amount of compassion or concern for patient care.

They took time to see me and do extensive testing, although when it gets close to lunch time they pretty much push you out the door. Also, I had received approval from my insurance to make my orthotics and was told to fax the letter to the front desk managers at the clinic, and it was my understanding that once they orthotics were ready they would contact me. However, I did not here from them for over a month, and because I was busy at work, it took me some to reach out to them. They indicated that I would have to come in, pay a deposit, and then they sent to be made and give me the paperwork for my insurance, which no one told me from the beginning. I could have saved up for the deposit because I am on a limited income, but now I have to be in pain longer because they didn't care to communicate with me. Even though their orthotics are somewhat cheaper than other places, I think I am going to have to go to a different company that is more reliable. It's a shame.
