Dr Childress was my dentist for 28 years and I then moved to Nevada. I've been going to Dr. Samer Alassaad (known as "Dr. Samer" for over a year now. I've been to a lot of dentists in 60 years. Dr. Samer is absolutely the best I've ever seen. Scrupulous, hygienic, kind, careful, very, very, modern practices. He offers "conscious sedation", nitrous oxide, and local anesthesia. He uses a very fancy camera to make records of the mouth. Digital xrays are immediately added to your digital record and he will share these with you and discuss. His assistant is quiet, friendly, and very open to hearing the patient's concerns and comments. When I went to Dr. Samer initially, I was terrified. I had given up my former dentist and not seen a dentist for several years because I had developed quite a phobia. The pain and anxiety of dentistry far out-ran my usually conscientious dentist visits. Honestly, Dr. Samer gave me the conscious sedation procedure for my first big treatment and after that I was able to cope with only nitrous because I knew he wouldn't allow me to suffer. Dr. Samer has meticulously addressed my many dental problems and my mouth is almost fixed. I am delighted with our progress. Meanwhile, I have forgotten to be anxious. Best dental experience I've ever had. Childress and the entire staff are also so kind and understanding and personable and friendly and enjoyable and intelligent and so many other wonderful things. I was always explained all of the procedures and everything else so that I was actually aware of what was being done to me. I felt actually cared for and not at all cheated or anything else you often feel at a dentist. There was no pain or discomfort and it was consistently made sure that I was comfortable and well sought after. I've known Dr. Childress for 7 years. It is a tough thing to convey what his care has been for my family and myself. I've come so far under his careful hand. For thirty years I lived with 5 old crown/caps in my mouth. Crowns that were placed there when I was 12. They were right in the front of my mouth. The kind of caps that appeared green tinted because of the stainless steel base. At 9 years old, just after my permanent two front teeth had grown out I had a traumatic bicycle accident. The crash into the curb chipped my front teeth and cracked two other permanent teeth. The pain and the subsequent years of dental care left me terrified of dental work, dental chairs, dental offices, etc. The years of neglect to my teeth left me with a less then presentable smile. I hated my smile. Later in life, even when wanted to give my own children and family a loving smile, I would present a half smile or just turn my head away. Forget taking pictures, even at my own wedding I'd closed lips smile only. I hated my smile. At Forty years old I began a career in Healthcare. I wanted to set patients as ease with a genuine smile and conversation, but I found that I personally just couldn't get past my "clean yet green" teeth. When your up close with people, a warm smile conveys confidence and comforting acceptance. It was time for me to smile again, genuinely. I am going to try to sum up this review.. Dr. James Childress let my tears fall. He took his time, he never rushed me out of the dental chair or dismissed my needs. He makes it work. He cared for me as if I was precious. He listened, and, patiently, patiently allowed me to help him help me. When I needed more time or pain relief he honored that. I never was made to feel like I was a burden. I never felt like I was exaggerating. He responded to the fearful person I was with kindness and without judgement. He worked in segments that allowed for my fragile nerves to integrate and prepare my mind&body to continue treatment and tooth replacement. He reassured me and explained all options, wether they were financially beneficial to him or not. He established a payment plan with me. His staff is gracious and emulate all that is professional and remain affectionately approachable. Dr. Childress has called me personally to see how I was and check on my comfort and satisfaction. Also, my children are absolutely comfortable in his care. He does everything above and beyond. If there is a need he can not meet in his office, he knows who is most skilled at meeting that need. He does not ever leave you to fend for yourself. He knows where to direct for all dental care. All my crowns have been replaced now. I've also a bridge that I've never had one single issue with. An implant was placed and crowned. Several cavities have been treated and sealants have been placed. I eat and drink without fear or pain. I smile easier now. Thank you, Dr. James W. Childress. About this Dentist & his staff: 1. He (Childress) has been voted Davis' #1 Dentist on several occasions through The Davis Enterprise newspaper. 2. He has about 30 years of experience. 3. The office is always being upgraded; new technology, "doohickies," remodeling & whatnot, as well as giant Phalaenopsis orchids to liven the place; in other words, they are always trying to make the office comfy, friendly, & modern. 4. The staff seems happy and I notice a lot of familiar faces every time I visit. 5. This place is good for children. I'm not sure if this is still a feature, but when I was a child I enjoyed picking toys out of their "treasure chest": stickers, bouncy-balls, etc. Personal stories of service above & beyond: A few years ago I was toying with the idea of dental school, or becoming a hygienist. As soon as the good Doctor heard this he offered to meet with me out of the office to discuss what that would entail. His hygienist also offered the same service! This one is second/third-hand that I heard from a co-worker: The mother of a bride-to-be broke her tooth a few hours before the wedding & Dr. Childress rushed to her aid (on the weekend) so that she wouldn't have to take wedding photos with a broken tooth. read more

I haven't been to Dr. Samer since moving out of Davis at the end of '09, but he deserves some Internet props. Over the course of several years I went to his office for regular cleaning and whatever work I needed. Unfortunately, this included a few fillings after I came off an extended uninsured period. More on that in a minute. All the cleanings by the hygienists and the checkups by Dr. Samer were done thoroughly and professionally. Even the visits for the fillings were minimally uncomfortable. The staff was always kind, professional and efficient. I think the prices were pretty reasonable, about average for Davis, though most of my work was covered by the student health insurance. Back to the fillings. After being inserted, they never gave me problems. Last week (September 2011) I went to a new dentist in Berkeley. He gave me an initial checkup, including visual inspection and X-rays, and remarked several times how well my fillings sat. None had cracked its tooth, and none had shifted in its space to allow debris to squeeze into the filled cavity. There was no overflow and no residue. The new dentist was impressed. So, that's my review and recommendation, but it also channels the expert opinion of another dentist. read more

I generally don't like Dentists because of my past experience. However, I had so far very good experience with Dr. Alassaad. During one of my visits a front tooth came off, which was loose for some time. He did not propose the most expensive treatment, a bridge or an implant, but he simply proposed to put it back at the same visit. It took about 20 minutes. It was my own tooth. It feels very comfortable. I can eat and chew normally, looks great and was very inexpensive. And that is what I like about any profession: do the least painful and least expensive but best for the customer. This was not my first good experience with Dr. Samer Alassaad, who I also call a very skillful dentist. read more

My experience at Dr. Alassaad's office was great and the quality of his work is amazing. I had expressed to Dr. Alassaad the lack of satisfaction I had with my smile. I have been to many dental offices and have been disappointed quite frequently. I have had bad orthodontic work done as well as misalignment in my teeth. My hope was that Dr. Alassaad would create a smile that made me happy. He did just that! Dr. Alassaad as well as his staff were all very understanding throughout the whole process and really took the time to make sure that I was ultimately content. Wendy at the front desk is especially amazing and caring. She was almost as excited as I was throughout this whole process. Dr. Alassaad used advanced technology to create a new smile for me using crowns. He explained the pros and cons of my treatment and was very transparent with me throughout the entire process. He wanted to make sure that I got exactly what I wanted, paying special attention to quality. Dr. Childress has a heart of gold. I had just moved to Davis when my 16-year-old son knocked his front teeth completely out playing basketball. It was a Sunday afternoon, and I wasn't a patient. I was just scared mom. Dr. Childress dropped what he was doing immediately and met me at his office. He saved my kid's teeth. Since then he has without the slightest hesitation accommodated every dental emergency my children have had. His office staff is amazing: friendly, professional, accommodating and, when necessary, consoling. The excellent hygienists and dental assistants just make it even better. I know them all by name because their dedication and demeanor make each one memorable. His associate Dr. Alazad works on my teeth, and he amazes me with his talent and attention to detail. Dr. Assad knows his profession, but he found a cavity in my X-ray that no other dentist (I tried two) was able to find. I now believe he gave me several unneccessary fillings over the eight year period that he was my dentist. Watch out. read more
