I agree with all the negative reviews for wait time, at least 2.5 to 3 hours. The first time I checked in as a new patient, I found out that 2 people with appointment 30 minutes after mine were seen before me because they arrived earlier than me. I brought this up to the assistants but they all denied it, even though I saw a sign-up sheet up front showing names, appointment time, and arrival time. Dr. Song seems to be very knowledgeable but he only took less than 5mins to check my eyes. Instead, he kept chatting with his assistants about office matters and how 100% majoring in biology is garbage, etc. When I was still doing my tests, I was asked to stop and let another patient use the equipment just because after that she could go home. Dr. Song seems to be the only one in charge of everything, and his staff are a group of young kids who only do what he tells them to. They gave me a surgery pricing estimate without any itemization which was way over my insurance coverage, probably full of hidden charges. Another thing that I was very uncomfortable with was that one of the assistants gave me a vision test after dilation which, of course, wasn't good as my previous test, done without dilation, two weeks ago. I felt like they used that as an excuse to rush me toward getting surgery. They run a dishonest business. read more

I'm sure James is a good ophthalmologist but being a patient here is simply untenable. Appointments literally mean nothing at this practice. You can show up 15 minutes early for your appointment and still have to wait 3 hours to be seen. If you are considering becoming a patient here, you shouldn't. read more

PSA: Warning No one answers the phone although their stated office hours start at 8:30am! I've called from 8:30 am to 9:00 am and have only gotten a voice-mail and never a live person. I've personally witnessed them checking voice-mails from 8:40 am at 10:40 am in the office! Crazy? Also, your eye exam appointment is easily 2 hours, if not more. I don't know if this is the office over booking patients or just plain inefficiency. Seeing that most of the waiting room is filled with retired individuals, I am assuming over booking. My mom has been visiting this place for many years. The office is poorly managed, the wait time could be as long as 3-4 hours even if there is an appointment time. My husband and I were referred to Dr Song. Our experiences have nothing but pleasant. During this Covid-19 pandemic, one would expect waiting room to enforce social distancing; every time we went, there at least 4 patients, at times 6 in their small waiting room. My husband had laser procedure to remove film surrounding his lens implant from cataract procedure; and drops to his eyes were done right there in the waiting room. Rinsing of his eyes after the laser procedure to remove gel used was hurried, I believe, coz my husband complained about feeling there was plastic in his eyes. Prescription eye drops were given on paper; and I had to request them to fax it to my pharmacy if choice. One would think that in this age of technology and especially during this pandemic, that they should be sending prescriptions directly to the pharmacy. Dr Song implanted IOL in both eyes two years ago. Results could not be better, nearly 20/20 for both distant and near . Office is well run with emphasise on precision . Dr. Song is an excellent ophthalmologist. He is very caring and attentive to patients. My mom did a cataract procedure with him, and he checked in often to make sure her recovery was ok. He also called the night before the procedure to make sure she was fully prepared. And he also called the night after the procedure with detailed instructions on how to care for the eye and to check in how she was feeling. The procedure was a success, and her eyes are both fully fixed now because he was very accurate and detailed in his procedure. We highly recommend Dr Song. read more

My mother-in-law had a thorough routine exam of her eyes. We had spent more than two hours in Dr. Song's fully equipped office using a variety of machines and tools to perform different tests. The machines were not always operated by the same techicians so we had to interact with several staff members. But I must say that ALL of them were young, energetic, caring and polite, not to mention that Dr. Song himself was knowledgeable and explained things in a simple way that was easy to understand. read more

Sadly, I am an unlucky person who was diagnosed with severe Normal Tension Glaucoma on both eyes many years ago. Since then, I have been researching & circling along many reputable clinics throughout the bay area with no noticeable help until I received the well-planned Diagnosis/Treatments/procedures provided by Dr. Song. A brain MRI was initially prescribed to isolate the root cause. Afterwards, many diagnostic tests and exams were performed such as tonometry, gonioscopy, imaging tests, visual field tests, etc. Everything was done with very new up to date advanced eye care equipment.  Through laser therapy and screening of various eye drops to best suit my eyes the intraocular pressure in both my eyes have dropped from 18 to about 13 mm Hg My questions were professionally answered along the way with easy to understand terms by Dr. Song.His responses clarified any confusions I had as well as relieved me of any worry. I knew I was in good hands. BTW, who says that 2020 is a bad year? List of Problems: 1. Every appointment takes a minimum of 3 to 4 hours from a yearly eye exam to a follow up. 2. They check your vision EVERY time you visit whether it is a yearly exam, a three month, two week etc. follow up?! 3. The office does not go through the normal channels of submitting a claim to your insurance office and then billing you for the remainder afterwards. Instead they phone up your insurance office and ask what your coverage is and then want their payment at the time of service. So you have to keep track of your family's deductible balance or you may end up paying extra for services your insurance covers. So now begins my story. I was told to schedule an appointment to follow up on an issue. The staff dilated my eyes and Dr. Song came in...I mentioned I did not feel comfortable with his office practice of having payment at the time of service rather than submitting through the insurance company first. He replied that was office policy and that he had no control of that (even though it was his own office) ?! Then he said he was very busy and thought I should go see a retinal specialist and threw me out of his office! So even though I rushed to his office after work not only was I not seen, but I was sent home with my eyes dilated for no reason! Very unprofessional! I suspect he gets away with this way of doing business, because he and all his office staff speak both Cantonese and Mandarin. Well, I speak English and can go anywhere. So no thanks! read more

Like the other reviews, AVOID this place unless you want to spend your whole day for an appointment. For a 10:30am appointment time, I arrived at 10:25am which is 5 minutes early. After waiting for 30 minutes, I complained to the front desk that it's been 30 minutes past my appointment time. The front desk told me that there was nothing she could do and that Dr. Song takes long time with his patients. When I told her maybe then, he shouldn't schedule his patients like this, she replied, and I quote "Dr. Song likes to schedule this way. He likes his patients packed in here." Obviously he has ABSOLUTELY NO REGARD for other people's precious time. He is out to get your money, and would never admit that his surgery results were not successful as promised, as I have problems with my vision after my cataract procedure done by Dr. Song. read more

Let me state, I am a medical professional with knowledge of ophthalmic practices and a very minimal prescription. I was referred to this provider by my insurance plan. I called to inquire about their price for a contact lens exam because I have an allowance benefit. To maximize the amount, its better that I find the lowest cost exam and use the remaining funds for contact lens. The woman told me several times the exam cost "depends on how much your insurance will pay". I explained that my insurer said I will receive 15% off their scheduled rate. The woman kept asking how much my benefits are. It doesn't matter how much my insurance will pay - how much do you charge? Then she finally said "it could be under $100, it could be over $100". What kind of answer is that? The lack of transparency gave me the impression this office will use deceptive tactics for pricing services. EYE don't think so! read more

It is sad to read these poor reviews about Dr. Song. Patience is a virtue and I guess I'm a patient guy. The time spent in his waiting area has never been excessive and it seems my Medicare insurance coverage meets my needs and his requirements. I "feel" for those who have had bad experiences with his billing practice or in his waiting area. That's unfortunate. For me, I have lived with a condition called OMMETAPHOBIA for most of my life and additionally I am a diabetic. Every three months Dr. Song checks the pressure of my eyes using a Tonometer. Virtually every patient who has this eye pressure test has no problem. For a patient, such as myself, with OMMETAPHOBIA it is a living hell. If I could I'd be climbing the walls to avoid this test. Yet somehow Dr. Song sooths me and relaxes me enough to complete this simple procedure. He has also performed cataract surgery using ReSTOR lenses and I can now see again. If there are zero stars here, I would give this doctor one. Very bad bedside manners. He prefers talking to his assistant who takes notes instead of talking to the patient so you feel like you are a laboratory rat being a subject of a conversation you can fully hear but not participate in. He comes across as rude and will not explain his diagnosis to you. But he will explain it to his apprentice/assistant!! That's so demeaning and not to mention rude!! He comes across as grumpy, abrupt and arrogant as well. This is after you spent hours waiting for him since he piles his patients in his overbooked calendar so he can make more money at the expense of your time! No wonder you can always book appointments anytime! They will lump you with other unfortunate patients. My advice for patients - run to the other direction!!! read more

Dr. Song performed cataract surgery on both my wife and myself several years back. Yes, waiting times are long but all exams and checks and re-checks are very thorough. He is probably, without doubt, the best eye surgeon in the area. I would much rather have a surgeon spend the extra time to re-check eye measurements many times before surgery and to get it right than to have less than optimal outcomes. Both my wife and I now have 20-20 vision in both eyes and require no glasses for near or far after he implanted our multi-focal lenses after removing the cataracted lenses. We are very pleased with our outcomes and we get to enjoy perfect vision in our senior years. If you have eye conditions within Dr. Song's specialties then I can assure you, he is worth waiting to see and you will be getting the best care possible. read more

That hasnt changed at least for 3 years (well, at least 3 years).
