One of the last true music stores. . The owner was very friendly and helped me in choosing my first guitar to suit me. It's an awesome place with a massive selection of instruments, amps, speakers, parts.. the also do repairs on instruments and equipment. By the way, I recommend calling first, just in case he's out. James Music - Entry to the store. - Pawn Shops Near Me - Adelaide, SA

My area of music is world percussion (tabla, darbuka etc.) and it was time to expand ... I wanted/needed a big bass drum, something like a shamanic drum, for an upcoming Fringe show and just because. Popped into James Music and the owner, Maurice, was just brilliant. We looked around and although he didn't have what I needed he pulled out a catalogue and we went through it together, talking through what I was looking for. We landed on a Buffalo Drum and he then rang the supplier to see which of the options were in stock. I confirmed the order later that day and it arrived in a couple of business days. He might be a guitar expert but he had an interest in what I was looking for and went out of his way to help me ... awesome customer service and a great little music shop!! Atmosphere in a music shop is crucial I think, and the crusty clutter of time, as long as it is clean and well dusted really adds a lot of character. If you agree then you will take the time to go a few streets South out of the central city strip to Sturt Street where you'll find a car park easier and enjoy the experience of a second hand music shop that has been sitting in the same place with the same fellow operating it for thirty five years. One stop advice, repairs and character. There are so many wonderful musical instruments hanging and sitting in the store and he has a wonderful touch with them all including piano accordions! James himself I mean. He was fixing one while I was taking my pictures of the store. Musicians around Adelaide either know him, love him or have yet to meet the amazing James. Sort of crunch granola on one level and Santa Claus on another he is a personable treat at hand when you need musical assistance. Get him talking and you may unleash some brilliant stories that are rarely told. The shop is reasonably priced and the various services including classes are all well respected, so if you are just starting out in the industry and have polite humility in your make up, this could well be a touch stone, a veritable gold mine, a very good place to visit indeed. On Sturt Street lies this little unassuming store - James Music. Today was my first (and very, very unlikely last) visit to here, in which I wasn't sure what to expect. You know how you go to some of the bigger chain stores only to be 'dumbed down' by the sales staff who just want to make a sale, or think they know better - rather than treating you like someone who wants to rock, or whatever it is you want to do. If you're like me, who enjoys an atmosphere of things just being in places for you to discover instead of it being in front of you to make it easier - the thrill, shall I say - this is the spot you want to check out. It's also pretty awesome how the owner will show you to each room and let you check it all out at your own perusal. I counted at least 30 synthesiser and keyboard varieties, some of which I've rarely seen anywhere else - vintage much. In short, it's pretty much up to you to check out each room to see what's there. You never know what you might end up with - given the amount of stuff on shelves, below sight and in hidden-away racks, you're sure to find something!!! On the racks in the first room was a whole bunch of guitars. I don't know much about guitars - I know a little but not much - synths are more my area, but still to check them out is worth an afternoon. I felt like a kid in a store let loose - I was, for a few minutes at least. read more

This place is pretty awesome. Whenever I'm in town, I make sure that I pop my head in for a quick browse. My last purchase in here was a tuner, but that was many moons ago. I love to look at all the guitars in stock. There's some good deals, but every time I get excited and that feeling of an impulse buy begins to coarse in my veins, I check my bank account and go back to my trusty old ratty Sammick. But sure enough, one day I'll be back with a healthier bank account. The people here are pretty awesome. Really, I quite like this place and think that the people here are friendlier than most music shops I go into these days. read more

Don't be turned off by the exterior, brethren of the commercial age! My dad's a music man. Huge music man. Alas, I turned to words, but he still likes to... fascinate me with long YouTube sessions of what he considers to be musical bliss. This is one of his stores. He does a lot of trading (buying and selling), and though he rarely ever makes a good deal off this establishment (which just means he's never quite tried to rip the owner off), he frequently pops in just to stare at the wares. It's a thing I do, sometimes, but with bookstores. Sometimes I'll just stand there soaking it up, even if I don't intend to buy anything (being already in the middle of several novels already). And that's what my dad loves about this place. It's the atmosphere. So, while he swears by it, I don't as much. The store has a very heavy focus on guitars, which I think may be considered to its disadvantage (particularly as the store's title seems to encompass all music). And, being a non-musician, I know a really good music store by how miserable it makes me for never having taken up an instrument, or by how poignantly it inspires me to do so. read more
