James is not only great with curly hair but fantastic with color. I have struggled with my hair color for years until I met James. Every time someone would color my hair it would fade to copper orange. Which led to hairdressers darkening and darkening my hair. I do not live in the city. I met James when he did my daughter's curly hair, which is very different than mine, he handles all kinds of curly hair. I moved a few years ago and it was quite the drive to James so I tried someone in my area and quickly I returned to him to color correct my hair once again. For YEARS I have been trying to find someone in the area who really knows how to cut curly hair with the right layers and shaping to make the curls fall and spring naturally, and I went through some rough (and overpriced) cuts (think: triangle hair) before I found James. James immediately knew how to manage my hair and I left with it looking fabulous. Just got my haircut and am so happy with the results. For reference, I have thinning, fine, pretty curly Indian hair that (for now) I like to wear somewhat long. Most people don't know what to do with my hair so I get some weird cut and then just live with it. James not only has expertise in cutting curly hair but he is very generous with his knowledge and gave me some very useful tips about the best way to manage my hair. My straight, fine hair has never looked better. He has a unique way of doing highlights that gives hair dimension and amazing shine without all the damage. His single process color is also great. I had my first ever dry cut with James yesterday after deciding to embrace my curls (after years of straightening). I'm not one to post a lot of reviews but I felt this warranted a response because it was a bit out of control. I called the number from yep and whoever answered just said "HELLO?? Hello Zach is that you??" I respond is this James McNally salon I'm looking to make an appointment? The man proceeds to say yes and asks multiple times why I'm calling from a blocked number. I apologize that my work number is a blocked number while he proceeds to scream at me for calling from a blocked number. I think this man is paranoid and just rude. Whoever is answering the phone which I'm assuming is James, works out of his apartment and was abrupt and rude. I don't care how good he cuts or styles hair...if that's how he's treating his current or new customers I would want nothing to do him. I highly recommend never using this salon! read more

Where do I even begin?! First, his customer service is just through the roof. He's very welcoming, funny, charasmatic and down to earth in every possible way. He asked about my daily routine to get an idea of what I was looking for because I went in not exactly sure what I wanted but I knew I needed a change. I had a botched bleach job done on my hair and my ends were damaged. He not only made sure I was completely satisfied with my cut and color, he took his time with me. James has been coloring my dry, fine, extremely curly hair for about eleven years. He really "gets" curly hair. Before seeing James, I had visited all the big curly salons in NYC (Christo, Ouidad and Devachan) and had gotten brassy highlights that dried out my hair and bad single-process jobs. James really understands how color works with curly hair, and he does subtle, well-placed highlights that stay pretty. He is great with single process too. Recently, he cut my hair for the first time, and my significant other ACTUALLY NOTICED AND GAVE ME A COMPLIMENT. I have followed James to two salons and cannot recommend him enough! I have a cut and blonde highlights every few months. I have been to James before for cutting but never before for color. But in my quest to find a new go-to stylist for everything hair, after a bout of disappointments and inconsistencies with previous salons, I asked James if he would do my color and cut. I had no idea that a process of highlighting that I had actually been looking for, James actually does, and did a beautiful job of Balayage highlighting, bringing out gold and caramel tones in my hair that still (almost 2 months later) look natural and attractive. He has a salon set up in his studio as a private stylist and I would pay to have my hair done with him just to talk to him because he is a delight to chat with as well. With some over 20 years experience, there is no need for me to go anywhere else and would highly recommend anyone to go to him for updating your hair with rich and beautiful colors and exactly the cut you are looking for (NEVER cuts too much.) I am seriously considering going from a blonde to a caramel brunette for the Spring, to replenish some health and vitality to my hair after too many years of bleaching and highlighting.....but will be consulting with James first on exact color for my skin tone. I have super-thick, super-curly "bi-racial" hair. It's been a long, tumultuous, 32-year love/hate journey. I've been to many salons, purchased many products,and been through a number of bad experiences, so I'm verrry picky when it comes to my hair. Trust me when I say that James is awesome. I go to him for pintura highlights, knowing that one false move could leave me looking like a tacky low-budget hoochie. But I get tons of compliments on my hair. It looks natural, but it now has more dimension and looks a little more edgy than it did before. He was even nice enough to touch up my hair for me for free when I went on my honeymoon and the sun made the top of my hair look a little bit uneven.
