Before applying, I spoke with Principal Laurie Lopez and asked direct questions about bullying, student safety, and accountability. We were encouraged to apply and brought our child in for an assessment. Afterward, Mrs. Lopez emailed that she wanted to meet me IN PERSON "before I make a final enrollment decision." I came in the next day. There was no meaningful discussion. I was immediately told my five-year-old wasn't ready for kindergarten, read words backwards, had concerning "peer-to-peer interactions," and might need significant assistance in the coming years. This was bizarre considering my child had attended a highly reputable, academically focused preschool for 2 1/2 years and was academically about a year ahead of public-school expectations. I asked for a reassessment. Mrs. Lopez suggested maybe reassessing my child in a few weeks. When I asked why the reassessment couldn't simply happen the next day, she looked at me and immediately said, "Oh no, it's a hard no." That interaction made it very difficult for me to believe this was genuinely about determining my child's academic readiness. I asked why she made me come in person if the decision was already final. She said some people don't like receiving this kind of news by email. Yet her email specifically said she wanted to meet BEFORE making her final decision. My strong impression was that my earlier questions about safety and accountability had changed how our family was viewed. Instead of simply telling us we weren't a fit, the justification was placed on our five-year-old. We escalated our concerns about the admissions process and potential racial or cultural bias directly to Superintendent Dr. Andrew Currier and Father Thi. Despite raising these concerns with both, no meaningful investigation into the issues we raised was provided, and we ultimately felt our complaint was brushed off. I'm grateful my child wasn't admitted. If a school has a problem with parents asking difficult questions, say so. And if a minority family leaves your admissions process seriously questioning whether racial or cultural bias influenced how they were treated, that deserves an actual investigation--not a brush-off from leadership. Don't put down a five-year-old instead.

She pampers them with warmth and care, making them feel safe, comforted, and supported every day. From the moment he started at MSF, we saw a remarkable difference. He was genuinely happy each day and looked forward to his "working time" at school. Ms. Angeline has a deep respect for each child as an individual. She nurtured our son's growth both academically and personally, helping him gain confidence in expressing his needs and tailoring projects to match his interests and developmental needs. The environment she created in the Evergreen B class was warm, engaging, and thoughtfully structured. Coming from a full Chinese-speaking environment, the transition to an English-speaking classroom could have been challenging--but Ms. June, being bilingual, provided the perfect support. Additionally, we know how great of a school FCS is since my husband is a FCS Alumni and I was a substitute Teacher at the school for a year a while back. We thought that we would give public school a try, to save some money, and if we didn't like it or it didn't work out for our kids, we would re-evaluate our options.  This year when schools transitioned to distanced learning, due to COVID, our worlds were turned upside down, along with the rest of the world.  Our kids were struggling not being in the classroom and not being able to socialize with children their age, so when we heard that FCS was bringing back kids safely on campus we jumped on the opportunity to transfer them and have never once regretted that decision!  The Teachers, Principal and Staff at FCS have been AMAZING to say the least.  When we drove on campus to drop the kids off to school on their "first day" we immediately felt that our kids would be well taken care of, which was not a confident feeling for us at our previous school. The organization, care and seamless process to get the kids safely on and off of campus puts our minds at ease.  The Teachers do a wonderful job with communication and my kids immediately loved their new school and look forward to Chapel every week, which was also not an option at our previous school.  We appreciate and love our new FCS home and are so glad we transferred our kids to this school when we did. I went to this school 35 years ago, and I still remember it! I remember the young boy who came into…read moreclass late every day after lunch/recess puffy faced and crying. And, I remember the shame, humiliation, and fear I felt as a sweet 5 year old who got sent to the principals office for a spanking because I pulled tiny leaves and twigs off a bush and lose on the floor to make a little nest for birdies. I still remember the girl who told on me for this "offense" and how I had to remain standing when the whole yard, maybe 100 kids sat down, after the yard duty blew her whistle to signal someone's (me) in trouble. Making me stand amongst all the sitting kids was to shame and humiliate me. I then remember a couple of teachers asking me how I would feel if someone plucked my limbs off as I did to the poor bushes. They then shuttled me to the principals office in which I had to stand in line of maybe 5 other kids who were before me to face the principal. Then, I saw the boy who showed up late puffy faced and teary eyed every day after lunch/recess, leave the principals office after obviously enduring some sort of physical punishment by the person in charge of this institution. Then it was my turn to enter into the principals office. I was alone with this person. I was shaking. This person pulled out the paddle that she must have used thousands of time before day after day after day. She told me if I ever break the limbs off another one of gods creation's again that I would be paddled, as she smacked it against her hand. I remember leaving the office and seeing my neighbor, also a teacher, who said hello to me. I avoided her for the rest of my time living in our home as I was worried she would share what I had done with my mom. Then every day since then, seeing the same boy who came late to class after lunch/recess every day hurt my heart so badly as I knew he was being beaten by a paddle every day. This is all I remember from my thankfully only one year at this place. I'm sure it's changed since then but wow what an awful mark it left on me and I'm sure so many others, especially that poor boy.

He had that bump on his head for over a week. I was livid. Apparently, a third grader had been bullying my son and some other 1st graders during recess. There are only 2 teachers watching the kids during recess and when I asked my son where the teachers were, he said they were talking near the swings. Shouldn't they be walking and monitoring? I believe there are 1-3 grade classes out during recess at the same time, which is a lot of kids for 2 teachers. The final straw was when the principal called me and had the audacity to give excuses for the bully (I.e. the kids have been doing virtual learning so they have a ton of energy and she said maybe this "other student" could be running and not looking and bumped into my kid). Like, are you serious right now?!? I couldn't believe she was siding with the bully? My son tells me different and I am going to believe him. He is a sharp kid and his memory is impressive, Plus he had no reason to lie as he was excited for 1st grade. The teacher was nice but she is not equipped for that class ratio. I never allowed my son back to that school since that incident and immediately enrolled him into a private school where he has thrived academically, socially, and have gained amazing friendships. The faculty at his new school actually really cares about their kids and lives by the zero tolerance policy when it comes to bullying. It takes me 2 mins to drive to VM vs 30 mins to his new school and I would say, the sacrifice of driving 30 mins to his new school is 1000% worth it. As a reference, this incident happened during the Sept 2021 fall school year.
