Musc Adult Emergency Room - MUSC ER patient room filth. It is unsafe for a liquid bleach cleaner to be left on a patient cart. So patient can clean his own room?

Yes, this was a 5 star experience!…read more After my husband's dreadful 19 hour stint at this ER last winter (for an MRI), I just didn't want to go, but, the doctor at Urgent Cars explained that the health of my left eye was at risk. I didn't need any more convincing. I called a friend and we headed downtown to the MUSC Adult ER on Jonathan Lucas Street. The particulars of the visit would be frankly, TMI, but the terrific experience and quality of care was noteworthy. The waiting area was surprisingly empty on this late Sunday afternoon. Check in was a breeze. I was taken back to triage right away and escorted to a room where I was immediately introduced to 2 nurses. Soon, thereafter, I was evaluated by a 3rd yr ER resident and the chief. After a thorough eye examination, the resident explained next steps. A nurse gave me a shot of Versed and I was ready to go. The on-call 4th year opthomology resident appeared to perform the procedure. I called my friend to pick me up ... we went through discharge instructions ... and I was on my way. Total time from arrival to departure was about 3 hours. The time went by quickly. The ER resident checked on me several times. Everyone was kind, professional and very proficient. Obviously, this was not how I expected to spend my Sunday evening but it could have been a whole different scenario.

The institution needs to do something about the backlog and the old building I don't think I will be coming back to this dirty and slow place. Just two weeks ago another reviewer writes about her mother. Just when I was going to go back home they called me to draw blood. Half an hour later we go to another waiting area that reminds me of M*A*S*H with people on stretchers and chairs all around a small area. I didn't have covid and I am afraid I will catch it here. They said there are no rooms and my pain is going away but my wife won't let me go back home. Had to sign some consent forms in this secondary waiting area that should have been given to me when I came in, isn't that what they used to do years ago? I think I rather die at home than in this s***hole of hospital that reminds me of a third world country but I chose to come here because my next door neighbor had the same 10 days ago and she was taken by the ambulance to Trident Medical Center and she passed two days later. I didn't have time to check with my primary. Recommendation: if you think that you will be lucky to heal on your own don't come here, it is horrible. This must've been a good place to land when it was built some 50 years ago around 1964 I must give credit to everyone that works here because they make it work, not sure how but the people are great! So this is how it works, the Hospital is not big enough for the number of people so they make you wait in the first waiting area and after a while they take you inside to a secondary waiting area and after a while they take you a room where it has been partitioned with curtains, you wait for the Doctor and after you are seeing you go back to the secondary waiting area where nurses will administer IVs or whatever medication you need or taken to X rays only to go back to the secondary waiting are while the process repeats itself with all the other people in the pipeline. In this process my waiting time was stretched because the right hand never told the left where was I when I was waiting for the doctor in cubicle number 16 and nurses thought I went home. Juggling people around in small spaces without an organizational chart can be confusing if you don't have one person directing traffic.

Sweet. It's a very nice office with plenty of parking outside. The staff are very welcoming and friendly here. Due to Covid restrictions they ask that we wait for our appointment in the car. They called us within ten minutes. The exam room that we were assigned was clean, full of supplies and comfortable. The nice thing about this service is that all patients information is added to the account on the Patient Portal. So if you have ever been to any Roper your info will pull up. A nice advantage. A disclaimer here: I work for RSFH at another facility. The appointment was fast efficient and thorough with lab work done in the same building. Great service.

I have been a patient of RSF for over 15 years, primarily with a superb and recently retired PCP (Dr Pappas) and an excellent orthopedic surgeon ( Dr DeMarco) I badly injured myself and presented there on a Monday @ 6:45.... a full hour and a quarter before their advertised closing. There were two cars in the "patients' part of the parking lot and 3 cars in the employee's part. I interacted with 3 different people there and they refused to see me. The person in charge told me there were 3 patients already in there and they might not be finished with them before closing time. I literally begged them to see me. I was hurt and I am almost 80 years old. I told them about my long standing status as a Roper status. The didn't budge and didn't care. I decided to wait in the parking lot for a while to observe the cars there. The last patient apparently left about 7:30 and the last employee about 7:45. Being hurt and confused, I drove down to Drs Care, an urgent care center about a mile down Johnny Dodds Blvd. I checked in @ 7:58, 2 minutes before their closing time. The M.D. there treated me until 8:15, strongly advised me against driving, and recommended I go to the emergency room for a MRI and/or CT scan. I have been back there twice and they were very nice, very complete, and very professional each time I called the practice manager for the Roper walk in clinic a day or so later and she was as rude as the people at the walk in clinic. My advice = stay away from Roper Walk in Clinic and go to Drs Care. They advertise their closing time as 8:00 pm on flyers they send in the mail, on their web site, and on the front door of the office.

Relevant backstory: several days ago developed symptoms consistent with blocked bile duct. On Friday, had a piece of toast at 8 a.m. (relevant) went to PCP who immediately sent me to Roper Berkeley, Very good experience there (5+). Confirmed blocked bile duct. Bit of a bugaboo with transportation, but nothing major [Not all Roper hospitals do all surgeries, so transferred to Bon Secours]. Received cube of jello and small drink. Arrived well into evening at Bon Secours, where I met a terrific staff. ERCP scheduled for next day so no food no drink. To this point 5 stars. Saturday had ERCP by excellent surgical staff. All went great. Was allowed bouillon but again nothing to eat or drink after midnight as surgery next day to remove gall bladder. It should be noted here that this surgery is almost always done outpatient and you are sent home after just a couple of hours. But since I was already in hospital, easiest to just get that done. To this point still 5+. Sunday brought some confusion about the laparoscopic surgery time, but finally taken down around noon. Very quick, painless and pleasant experience. Back to room around 3, where vitals taken. Again, to this point 5 stars. The doctor reported to all that I could go home that day. After 3, saw no-one. Finally around 5 asked for any info on food, discharge, etc. This is where things went off the rails. Got lots of pushback about the doctor releasing me didn't mean the hospital had. I understood that and asked what the plan was, and oh, btw, any food or drink? The latter bit got some emphasis when the food delivery people came by in the middle of this discussion to take my non-existent tray away (sort of cosmic karma). To their credit they managed to arrange for a dinner, which was tricky as food services were about to shut down for the day. Not bad food. First meal since that piece of toast on Friday at 8 a.m. Asking for any clarification on when I would be discharged was again met with hostility and hand waiving, but no answer. Overheard: "nicest guy in the place suddenly turns into ..." .(not clearly heard but I got the gist). So with many angry words and a flurry of totally unnecessary rushing, I was shown the door at around 6. Much to my surprise, unlike any other medical facility I've ever been in, you are just allowed to walk out and not be sent out in a wheelchair. Asking about this got more angry words. I understand several things here: (1) they are short staffed; (2) apparently there was some computer glitch; (3) the nurse was stressed about a personal situation and (4) it was within their rights to have me stay another day, which I would have done had they simply said I needed to. I may have been a bit more forceful than I am wont to be but I really dislike ambiguity and hand-waiving instead of a simple answer. "Yes, you need to stay another night and we'll rustle up some food" would have done the trick. I spent 40 years in a service industry, so I have some experience to fall back on. The above interaction would have seen me sacked. So in the last 2 hours what would have easily and enthusiastically been a 5 star review needed to be adjusted downward. My wife, who had patiently been there for 9 hours, felt the whole experience was badly handled and I know was upset. I don't wish to see anyone sacked. But I do hope, should I need to go there again, which is not unlikely as a senior citizen, that such issues can be better managed. Good experience with a tragic ending that didn't need to happen.

My nurse, Meredith, went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable during one of the scariest experiences of my life. She treated me with so much kindness, compassion, and respect. With everything happening in the world today, I was deeply touched by how welcoming and supportive the staff were. There was no discrimination or judgment--just genuine care and understanding. The hospital has a very diverse and professional team, and you can tell this place is women-led. Everything is spotless, well-organized, and filled with staff who clearly love what they do--and they love babies! One thing that stood out to me is that they never separate mothers from their babies (as long as the baby is healthy). You stay together for 48 hours until discharge, which is such a comforting policy. My baby is currently in the NICU, and they even have a program that allows mothers to stay on-site after discharge to be close to their babies. When I walked into the NICU nursery and saw a nurse gently holding and bottle-feeding my baby with such care, it brought me to tears. These women are angels in scrubs. There was no trace of bias or animosity--just pure compassion. As a mother of a baby of color, that meant the world to me. I will never go to another hospital. I'm forever grateful to the incredible women here for their care, wisdom, and humanity.
