James dyed my brows and missed a part of my right eyebrow. He also gave me chunky bold highlights when I asked for "an extremely subtle babylight". Upon leaving, I asked if I could come back for a correction if the highlights and brows still looked weird to me the next day-- and James said yes. The next day, I emailed to ask when I could come in for a correction. James had his staff reply to me and tell me that he didn't want to do a correction and wouldn't be doing one. He also recommended an eyebrow tweezer (eyebrow aesthetician) during my appointment-- he gave me her name several times, but I couldn't write it down because my head was in the shampoo sink. He said he'd remind me of her name while I was checking out after the service, and then he forgot to do that. I called the salon after the appointment to ask for the brow specialist's name-- and the receptionist was exceptionally rude to me, and wouldn't disclose the name (even though I had already been told it several times). Do not go to this place. They're unreliable-- they don't keep their word about anything. And they don't listen to what you asked for during the consult. read more

It was time for my once a year cut and color, and boy did I need it! My hair was an absolute disaster - two-toned (black and my own mousy brown) from a hurried application of drug store dye, and utterly shapeless. First, the color - Tina let me know that the "espresso brown" I was hoping for was not going to happen unless I got rid of the black, which was something I had been wanting to do for a while, but nobody ever told me it was an option. This was a lengthly and more expensive process than I was planning for but I was glad to finally be free of that harsh color, and happy to have found a colorist that really cared about my hair looking its best. Now, on to the cut: I told Kim I was toying with the idea of cutting a bob, and instead of talking me out of it, like most stylists have in the past, she agreed it was a good idea. Then she gave me one of the best cuts I ever had, one that actually looks great when I DON'T blow dry, which is my preferred method of dealing with my hair. I also, for the first time ever, do not look like a soccer mom from New Jersey, which is usually what happens when I cut my hair short. Sadly, I find out Kim has left the studio, but I will be back regardless. Message to Kim - thanks for a great cut. You may have thought I was cranky and unhappy, but I was just hangry, as the cut and color unexpectedly took FOUR HOURS and I forgot to eat breakfast! read more

Everything about James Corbett Studio is special and comfortable. James does gorgeous color (I'm blonde...well, blonde thanks to James!) - and being in his chair is always a pleasure. Maryanne cut my long curly hair - she's a curl specialist and it's super interesting to see her pick the exact pieces that need attention. They are of course following all Covid protocols - the space is so safe. Sometimes when you're in a cool fashion-y salon you feel weird and never quite cool enough. Being at James Corbett is exactly the opposite of that - everyone is friendly, nice and it's a clean and calm space. Unfortunately have to update my review on my last experience here almost a year later. Would first like to state that this has everything to do with my color experience and this was not easy to do. However yelp is exactly for this and I didn't like the way things were handled. I had been going here for quite some time and the last experience my hair was damaged and terribly colored. It has since been fixed at another hair salon after taking 1 year off from coloring my hair to allow for it to repair. I was taken late for my color appointment approximately 1.5 hours and I had another appointment after. I felt like as a result she rushed through my hair and possibly skipped some steps or wasn't paying attention to the color process. My hair ended up turning a brass color, some highlights started at the root, some were stripy. There were gaps in some places and then areas where their was an abundance of color. Overall it was terrible and I made an appointment the next day for corrective color at another salon. The entire process of coloring my hair cost me about $1000 because of this. When I called and explained what had happened I received a lot of attitude and push back on the phone. I think it's quite obvious that I wasn't going to come back to get this fixed because my trust was broken and I had already gone elsewhere to fix the damage that was done. Even months later my hair was a terrible color and damaged. I am also confused as to why people in specific service industry's don't realize that sometimes people mess up and you just need to respect the customer. I'm not a celebrity or blogger and tend to get treated less then because of it. Not here for that attitude and just because I am not one of those people doesn't mean I'm not capable of a very nice tip. I've been trying to write this review for two weeks now but nothing I write can convey how great this experience was! For some time now I'd been having some nightmare experiences with my hair, with both cuts and color. I have thick, curly hair that I'd been highlighting for several years. A friend recommended James Corbett and so I decided to give him a try. Needless to say, I was beyond stressed and also nervous about going, especially considering James' credentials. But this salon is so warm and inviting that I immediately felt at ease. James could not have been nicer or more down to earth. We discussed my hair and he gave me realistic expectations of what I could expect. However, never did I expect to fall so back in love with my hair! The color is so rich and has a dimension I don't believe it has ever had. I had a colorist for years that I thought was really wonderful but there is no comparison with the magic that James has wrought with my hair. This is on a whole other level. Entitled, immature and unprofessional. I went in for a devacurl transformation and had an amazing experience from start to finish. They don't sell devacurl products, which surprised me, so they used other products on my hair. Being a curly girl was extremely new to me and I had no products at home to work on it so I had every intention to leave with curly hair specific products. My stylist recommended the products she used but I hadn't done any research on it beforehand. I was also one of the last clients so WHILE she was styling my hair I had to make a prompt decision if I wanted to purchase because the receptionist was leaving for the day. I didn't get a chance to learn if it was the best fit for my hair so I opted to buy it and do my research at home when I have more time. I didn't get a receipt nor did anyone explain the return policy to me. After doing research I find the ingredients in the products are not curly girl method approved. I really wanted to get products that were curly hair specific with no sulfates, parabins and silicones. I call the next day to explain this and was told I can only get a store credit. I asked if they can make an exception and the receptionist said she had to speak with the owner. Don't ask me why the owner of a salon has to make these insignificant decisions that normally a manager can just handle. We played phone tag for THREE days. I explained I would be leaving the country soon and would rather this issue not be outstanding. I heard nothing. Finally on the day OF my trip, I gave them another call to explain how dissatisfied I was that I had to keep following up. The receptionist scoffed at me and reiterated that "she thought I would be out of the country" and that it can be handled upon my return. Why would any company prolong a customer service issue? Finally mid sentence, she cuts me off and tells me to hold. Another voice answers without introducing themselves. I asked who I was speaking with and he said, "James" (presumably the owner). I preceded to introduce myself and explain my wanting to return the products had nothing to do with my stylist (she was amazing!) but more so it isn't compatible with my hair and I don't feel comfortable using it. His response left me flabbergasted. He said, verbatim, "No one put a gun to your head to purchase these products. They are great quality, and the devacurl products you want can be purchased at a WALMART. What did you spend? $100? Just return it when you can." I was shocked and we actually bickered on the phone back and forth. I told him how unprofessional he is and to belittle my choice to prefer another product over the ones he sells is ridiculous. I've worked in customer service for over 12 years and I have never experienced this type of disrespect. I've made accommodations for clients countless of times. Normally, your biggest worry when running a business is that the people you hire represent your brand with professionalism and poise. TL; DR - great experience with Tina, the colorist. She helped me choose a great color and really made me feel comfortable. Full review: Bit of a background on me before the review - I finished chemo back in October, and my hair has finally grown in a bit at the time of this review. Because it'd been a rough year, I wanted to do something fun with my hair, so I thought I'd get it a funky color. At the time I was thinking highlights. However, for the past decade, I'd been going to a salon that caters to curly haired folks, and since I barely had any hair, let alone curly hair, it was clear I'd need to find a new spot. I spent some time googling, hit upon a link to an Allure article that listed the top 20 color salons in NYC and settled on James Corbett Studio, as they offered a free consultation. Online, I signed up for the first available weekend slot and found myself with Tina. Who was wonderful. What I didn't know before our chat was that James does charity work with cancer patients and their caregivers - giving folks in town for treatments free haircuts and color. Which is a) amazing and b) means they know a lot more than I do about how chemo affects hair. Tina brought up things I wouldn't have considered, like the fact that we still don't know what my hair will be like, so maybe bleaching and going purple at this juncture is not the best idea. Point taken. Also, highlights were out because my hair was not nearly long enough for the foil. With the help of my sister, we settled on auburn (a change from my medium brow hair, but not drastic, as we wait for my hair to grow in to do anything bolder). Fast forward to tonight, when I had my appointment. It was an easy experience, starting with the receptionist who welcomed me and took my coat, to Tina, who talked me through what we had decided previously and then making additional suggestions. I was offered water or tea and a place to charge my phone. Because of the chemo, Tina suggested we go with the gentlest product possible, which I was all for. It took a little more than an hour for the color, the set and the wash and rinse. Jasmine and (I think) Janice did a fine job washing and drying my hair. When the hair was dried and I could see the full effect, I was a little hesitant, not because it was a bad job (it looked great!), but because it was so different from what I'd had before. Tina saw my hesitation and offered to bring some more brown back if I wanted. I suggested I sleep on it, as the longer I stared at it, the more I got used to it and the more I liked it. She agreed, and on the walk home, I decided that I really do like it, and I'm gonna keep it as is. Because it's freaking adorable. When my hair is finally long enough for the pixie cut I've been dreaming of (trust me, after you're bald for four months, you start having weird dreams), I'll definitely be going back. And, if I ever decide to pull the trigger on purple highlights (after my hair decides what it wants to be), I'll be going back to Tina, as well. Ooof... this got long, but I had a great experience with this salon. They really know what they've been doing and the added comfort they gave this former cancer patient was much appreciated. 2019: back to see Sho and he's still amazing. And the whole team is fabulous -- kind, welcoming, and diverse with a great array of clients. Such a happy customer :) 2018: I first came to the salon a couple of weeks ago for a treatment and a cut. Everyone was incredibly courteous and they helped to find me an appointment later in the evening, which I really appreciated... Unfortunately, while the treatment was pretty good, the cut was not. I liked the place - clean, modern and well designed and the central location - so I decided to send them an email saying I was disappointed. The owner wrote back almost immediately and offered me to return to have it fixed. The second stylist, Sho, is a master. After a horrible year of losing more than half of my hair from a medical condition, I finally grew enough back to get a haircut. I went to see Maryanne yesterday (a relatively new addition to the salon), and she was amazing. She was comforting yet knowledgeable. She was able to advise me on exactly what kind of cut I should get while I recover fully. We decided to cut it super short so that the areas that are really short and just growing back would look normal with the rest of my hair. Maryanne is incredible with curly hair. I actually saw her years ago at Devachan, when she was working there. She knows exactly how to cut each curl so that it falls perfectly. I would recommend her to any curly girls out there looking for a hair stylist. I'm sure she's also very talented with other hair types. I couldn't think of anyone better to go to after all I went through this year. I have received so many compliments already in the past 24-48 hours. Everyone from friends to colleagues to random strangers on the street have praised the haircut. I can't thank Maryanne enough for all she did. The salon is also really cool. Super laid back and sleek. I love that there are dogs hanging out around the salon--looks like stylists are allowed to bring their furry friends with them. Of course, the dogs were also all very well behaved. I also appreciated that this salon clearly knows how to work with clients who have lost their hair. They even run a nonprofit for cancer patients. It took me a long time to calm down enough from this experience in order to write a review. i have never been treated with less professionalism or skill in the 40 years i have spent on this planet. In essence, if you have long, dark, curly hair, (or if you have hair, in general!) and want a transformative color and don't want to end up being insulted by a prima donna, then PLEASE AVOID THIS SALON! I came to this salon with very specific ideas and instructions of what i wanted and liked, supplying pictures of what i didn't like. I shouldn't have bothered as James proceeded to make me look like Carrot Top had a baby with Sigourney Weaver in Ghostbusters. To add insult to injury, when i complained about the color not being at all what i had asked, he proceeded to insult me in front of the other clients. Namely, he called me ridiculous, with unrealistic expectations and insulting me so publiclythat i left shocked and angry. Sadly, I have nothing positive to say about the hair cut either. Danielle remained professional and even apologetic when her diva boss began to insult me but unfortunately the cut she gave me did nothing for my face shape or hair texture and am now patiently waiting for it to grow back. The only positive thing about this whole situation is that i was given a refund ( minus the $80 tip cash i had given them) but that hardly covers the humiliation, distress and annoyance i am still feeling now at having received a completely botched job. So do yourself a favour, save yourself $500 and much aggro and go somewhere else. PS: Based on my experience, i have no idea where the positive reviews on Yelp come from... Probably from James himself who seems to have plenty of time on his hands in his half deserted salon. read more

Really EXCELLENT. I've never written a review before and I've certainly never written a review about a haircut. I live out of town and have never in my life gotten a haircut like this so I figured I should write something!. Sho is the best hair stylist I've ever seen. His work is incredible. Usually when you get a cut everything is linear and straight. This is not the case here. The way he cut my hair is NATURAL. It's shaped perfectly without being linear and blocked. I love this salon. I stopped in and Todd was booked solid on a Saturday (2nd Saturday in a row). It was September and Todd's next opening is in November. He's worse than a gynecologist. I was so disappointed but I made an appointment with Tina, a colorist, for the following Saturday. She was kind enough to say hello to me and give me a consultation on the spot even though she was booked solid also. I was about to leave but I had my dog with me and started chatting with some of the staff and customers who were dog-lovers. My Wiley is a good luck charm! After a few minutes, the receptionist asked me if I was interested in a 4PM appointment because Todd had a cancellation. I jumped at the chance. I came to the salon almost fuming. It was early morning, I needed a last minute blow out and every single blow out hair studio in the area was booked entirely for the day. I tried Blow bar and some other 40$ blow out places nearby and everything was booked as if it was a zombie apocalypse and this was a line for the most essential supplies. The minute I walked in, I felt at ease and relaxed. Salon had a calm relaxing ambience to it, and while it was busy, it had an entirely different sophisticated vibe than your dime a dozen "blow outs only" places. The girl at the reception was super friendly, welcoming and had gorgeous hair and despite me being snappy and grumpy, graciously ignored my bad mood and accommodated me almost immediately. The blow out was 60$ and it was worth every cent, so I left a 35% tip. Unlike, the dime a dozen blow out bars where they hurry you out and give you one of the "on the menu" styles, the stylist was actually a very talented unique individual. I anticipate I'll go back to him for a hair cut. He listened to my every word and took his time to blow out my hair exactly how I wanted and recreate the style I had in mind. The blow out took almost two hours, for 60$ only, you can't beat the effort/quality of the final product. I never actually felt rushed, my hair hasn't been pulled once or worse my scalp hasn't been burned as it been many times before in those express blow out places. My favorite part is that entire time, my hair stylist was kind, quiet and didn't try to bother me with annoying chatter. He just let me be and relax. He was so gentle with my hair and so nurturing in his moves, I was very relaxed and almost half asleep by the time he finished. So much so, that I missed my boyfriend sneaking into a studio and waiting for me. They offered him a glass of wine while waiting and that instantly won them extra bonus points for customer service! If I lived closer, I'd go to this place all the time. Unfortunately, I don't, but still will make an effort in the future. If you are looking for a cheap decent quality blow out, this is not it. There are many other places in the area where you can get a cheaper blow out. This salon is clearly a true gem that takes a special effort to create serene ambiance paired with a fantastic hair services and a goal to nurture its clients. Came here for a private event & despite being a financially struggling person, I was treated with dignity and respect. Let me tell you their make-up person and stylist is top notch. I was able to get both my hair and make-up done very nicely and even got to be in pictures for the event. If I had the money, I'd definitely consider going here to get my beauty services. I went about a month ago for partial highlights and a cut, and wanted to wait a bit to see how everything grew out, etc. Everyone in the salon was lovely, from the receptionist to the assistants to James (color) and Shu (cut). I was offered a lovely cup of tea when I sat down for my color, and the salon itself is very nicely decorated. As is my normal routine, I told both James and Shu to do what they thought was best. James used a glaze first and then put in partial highlights. The color was all done very well, but I can't say I was in love with the colors chosen once I got home and really looked at it (although to be fair I did not express that at all). My overall color came out with a bit of a red tint (natural is a light-medium brown) and the highlights took a few days to calm down...they came across as a bit orange the first few days. In the end I don't dislike it, but I haven't felt at all like I *loved* how it came out, which for the price was a bit disappointing. Again, I gave James free reign over what to do so it's not like he did anything wrong per say, I just didn't love the overall result. Shu then cut my hair. He was lovely, and explained in detail the steps he was going to use to cut my hair. I did like how my hair came out after he cut and styled it, but he had asked in the beginning if I air dry my hair a lot and I said I did, and I have to say that the cut just does not look good when I let it air dry. I have to blow dry and then straighten my hair (and I already have straight hair) to get it to look decent. That was very disappointing. Overall even when I do take the time to style it, I like it but I don't *love* it. I think I probably would have had a better experience had I given explicit instructions, but I really do prefer to defer to what the professional thinks will look best and normally have good luck going that route. One thing that is awesome is that James founded a non-profit organization and provides free cuts & color to cancer patients, and he said he is trying to expand the program nationally. I really admired his dedication and clear passion for that cause. read more

This place is a godsend. James has completely artistically and simply restored my hair color to what I wanted. Sometimes I sit in his chair and don't have to say anything and he knows exactly what to do. He can make blonde look gorgeous and easy and natural and it always grows out and blends so well with my natural color. Shu does gorgeous cuts and blow outs. It feels like you're in the hands of artists with both of them. Everyone who works here is also kind- It's the talent of the star-studded celebrity salons without any of the attitude. As I sit here beaming @ my super tousled tresses it dawns on me; I've hit a gold mine. James Corbett studio changed my hair life. I was tired of paying exorbitant amounts for my basic hair routine (which consist of a weekly blowout , keratin/trim every 6 weeks, color glaze every 4 weeks). That's where JC studio came in, by the time Nate was done w me I looked Beyoncé Jlo fab. He blew out, pressed,& primped my hair to perfection & put in hair clips (for length & volume) all for $80.I couldn't believe the level of skill combined w a reasonable price. It's hard to find a good hair salon. A friend recommended James Corbett and I'm so glad because this place is great! I get my hair color/highlights done by James. He's so knowledgable and takes the time to figure out what you want and what will look nice with your skin tone/complexion. I was at another salon over the summer getting an updo for a wedding and that other sylist even commented on how well done my highlights were. I have my hair cut by Chris. He does an amazing job! He takes his time and really works with your hair until it looks just right. He really knows what he's doing and I was really impressed! He took a previously botched haircut that I was trying to grow out and turned it into a stylish new 'do. My hair is very straight and fine, so it doesn't do much, but he cut it so that it lays very nicely and frames my face well. The atmosphere at the salon is nice, modern, and fun/friendly. I have been going to James Corbett Studio for 6 years. I have never, EVER left there without feeling more than satisfied. Their hairdressers are so talented and everyone is so hospitable. The atmosphere is relaxed, yet professional. Not uptight in the least. Even with this relaxed atmosphere, they always run on time. I made the mistake of trying another salon recently that was NOT James Corbett. The person at this other salon overprocessed and basically fried my hair. James still welcomed me back with open arms. There was no awkwardness. James and his amazing team consulted with one another on the best approach to fix my hair disaster. Then they all quickly went to work and I left the salon looking amazing.
