We are a family with fairly healthy teeth, practice regular hygiene and dental cleanings, and had no significant issues 10 months (long stretch due to Covid) prior at our prior long-term dentist--upon seeing Dr. Gaddis, multiple cavities, root canals, and others services were promoted, many of questionable need. Pros: Good location, nice office, new equipment/technology, thorough hygienists, nice staff (for the most part), good bedside manner (for the most part) Cons: 1. Wife was referred for THREE root canals, ALL of which our endodontist told us he has no idea what Dr. Gaddis was referring to. Gaddis also referred us (like all her clients) to an endodontist that has many poor reviews, which was an early red flag, and why we ended up selecting our own (that is highly reviewed). It also raises the specter of potential quid pro quo between the two practices. 2. Gaddis told me my daughter needed sealant because of her baby teeth cavities being an indicator for her proclivity to cavities. When I said my prior dentist told us baby teeth are not a good indicator for cavities in permanent teeth (because they're weaker, less enamel, etc), she said "I don't recall hearing that in school". After a quick Internet search, I confirmed it is well known amongst professionals in the field that baby teeth cavities are NOT a good indicator for the health of adult teeth, leading me to conclude Gaddis either doesn't know some fundamental facts in dentistry or is intentionally discarding what she knows to promote more services (consistent with Con #1)...either of which is not good. 3. Front office staff can be a bit edgy/dry/cold...not outright mean, but not generally warm, like our prior practice. It's not a deal-breaker on its own, but coupled with the other issues not helpful. We were really hoping that we'd found a new dental home and allowed benefit of the doubt several times, but ultimately too many red flags have pushed us back to our prior practice until we can find a better local option.

Why was a 9am appt made then? No adequate response was received. No offer to help remedy the situation. People take time off from their jobs, and/or make arrangements to facilitate weekday appts. He constantly checked on my pain level while cleaning the area and made numerous reassuring statements about supporting my needs moving forward and even demoed how I need to support my gums. Both my hygienist and dentist were very kind, took their time with me, and made me feel welcomed. The dentist herself made sure my questions were addressed, talked to me about options for things, and was not pushy--as has been mentioned by other reviewers! But perhaps the best part is that I got an itemized list of pricing for future services at time of checkout. That is rare to find in healthcare and it helped me understand whether I could afford the recommended treatments. Pricing transparency in healthcare is desperately needed and I just wish everyone provided this service. I hope I can continue visiting RFD for years to come! It took 5 phone calls and 6 months to be reimbursed after the issue was overlooked and was filed with insurance incorrectly. After my initial Yelp review, they did reach out to make things right and keep our business. We went back today for my daughter's check up and it was a good experience for her and they fitted me for whitening trays for the inconvenience. I was told by Dr. Austin that an executive decision between Dr. Austin and Dr. Don concluded that one tooth needed to be crowned instead of the tooth I wanted crowned. I was never told I needed a second tooth crowned. Why was I not told during the initial consultation that I needed two teeth crowned? And, why didn't Dr. Austin and Dr. Don consult me when they made their secret executive decision to crown the tooth THEY felt needed crowning. Dr. Austin crowned the wrong tooth and they covered it up. The tooth that needed crowning she put a filling in. Now I have nerve pain in that tooth. Now she is referring me to an Oral Surgeon. I never had any pain. I spoke to Dr. Austin about crowning the wrong tooth 3 times and she would never admit that is what happened. She had 3 opportunities to redeem herself but she would not save her own reputation by taking responsibility for crowning the wrong tooth and causing nerve pain. Dr. Austin could have offered to crown the right tooth instead of filling it since she knew that was the tooth that needed crowning. Or, reimbursed me so I could get the right tooth crowned. If you want honest dentists Do Not go to Riccobene and Associates in Durham on highway 54. Avoid at all costs!! I give a rating of 0.

I really USE Yelp reviews and read them carefully because I really want to know WHY you like a doctor (it is just cuz you think he has "dreamy blue eyes" or is it more?) SO...HERE'S WHY I LIKE DR HILL: 1. I'm 67, fit, active -- walker, runner (not "serious" -- walk/run 2-3 miles 4-6x a week -- swimmer in summer and Fuel Fitness). I have hard plastic orthotics that I've worn for THIRTY YEARS. I assumed, when I first visited Dr. Hill, that my feet have changed over the past 30 (!) years and the orthotics would need to be replaced (not cheap, totally necessary). In other words, 30-yr old orthotics were an engraved invitation to "sell me" new orthotics. Dr. Hill held them to the bottom of my feet and said "well, these still look fine..." I'm not an untrusting person -- but THAT inspired trust! 2. She is a real "problem solver." She doesn't just reach up to her mental shelf and pull off a pre-formulated answer. She really listens and THINKS. And she's very clear, plain-spoken and practical. I have spent $2500 out of pocket (after insurance payments) trying to find out what is causing pain in my right ankle and base of my toes on right foot. 3 x-rays. 3 visits to EmergeOrtho (I could write an essay -- but let me just say I will NEVER EVER return to them -- waste of money. One doctor would contradict the next!) Visited Duke Sports -- and 3 Physical Therapy visits, who said it was tendonitis and only PT exercises would help, over a long time. Exercises DID seem to help -- but still definitely "something not right" and I've been scared to run and scared to do a lot of walking for fear I might cause some kind of real damage. 3. Dr. Hill heard my tale...took xrays. Said "I think what's going on here is complex." Said legs are likely aching due to: 1. my venous insufficiency (wear those compressions socks!). 2. Looks like I don't put the normal amount of pressure on my big toe -- causing the 2 next to it to be bearing more -- getting sore. 3. The two toes next to my big toe slant a bit towards the bit toe. Narrows the gap between the bones on both those toes, possibly somewhat pinching all the things that run between those bones. Said the hard plastic orthotics can sometimes cause an issue -- so go to a store and buy some insoles with heel cups (those were $10 -- so NOT a huge expense). Said to be better about wearing compression sock. When I said "so...why does the middle toe on my right foot stick up like that when I try to curl my toes? Still doing that after a year -- what's causing it?" She said "I have no idea. See? No b.s. -- Just one more reason why I like her. :-)

On top of that, she did the procedure to both toenails, even though only one needed the work. Why? Perhaps because she is a sadist. That was the vibe I was getting.
