Surprised to see the negative reviews on here. I guess it's only a local secret as the storefront was mobbed when I arrived. I was turned on to this farm from a relative who grew up in the poconos. I love to cook... hosted 17 people last turkey day and jaindl supplied me with a 29 pound bird that exceeded expectations. By far and away the biggest thing I've had in my oven. We drove to Jaindl farm and purchased turkey breast for Christmas Eve dinner. I wasn't expecting this turkey breast to be tough-to-chew because I have never experienced turkey meat that was tough before.. Turkey meat by nature does not have tough texture. This turkey meat also did not taste like any turkey meat I've ever had before. It actually tasted bad, and I'm someone who really likes turkey meat. Turkey breast is white meat, but this turkey breast looked and tasted like dark meat. I had high expectations for a Jaindl turkey breast for Christmas, so this was disappointing. read more

I know nothing about cooking whole turkeys or the ins and outs of Thanksgiving. A lot of local people in the area tell me different things about their birds being great to something standard - I can't really comment on that. I did manage to pick up a Grand Champion Young Turkey Breast, 9.35lbs. I know my way around a kitchen but again, never made a whole bird so I'll update my review once its cooked. Around Thanksgiving time, this place gets busy - I imagine it will be busy after the holidays also so make sure you call ahead to find out their hours and if they're open because YELP and GOOGLE have different times listed. Their store also has a variety of products too... Turkey legs, pulled turkey, turkey nuggets, and other things. I've had their BBQ pulled turkey which is good - just a little too sweet for my taste but if you're like me you can jazz it up with some heat and its great for sandwiches. The turkey nuggets aren't bad either - its cubed pieces of meat and not ground turkey paste so it has better flavor. The breading is bland but again, can jazz it up with some heat. Anybody who is some kind of a PETA whack or a vegan hippie might want to skip this one as clearly it's not going to be for you. If you like a good turkey meat sweat then you've come to the right place with Jandl. This place more or less produces the Cadillac of Turkeys. Screw Butterball or the Yugo which is some type of mystery meat store brand because this stuff is the real deal. Is it cheap? Hell no! But, is it as moist and flavorful as turkey will get? Hell Yes! Where do you find Jandl products? Three choices: 1. I guess they still do mail order. Call them at 1-800-475-6654 and they'll ship it to you. 2. They're available in a lot of grocery stores east of the Mississippi and the list of stores is on their website although in the northeast you're mostly talking a lot of higher end places like Wegmans or Whole Foods. FWIW, my local grocery store (Giant) that I frequent is listed on their site as carrying Jandl and I'll testify that I can't say that I have ever seen a Jandl either advertised as being there or actually there so caveat emptor if you go looking for one and you're grocery store does not actually carry them. 3. You make the trip to the home office in Orefield, PA where their seasonal retail store is located. They're open around times like the Super Bowl, Easter and a whole lot before & after Thanksgiving and Christmas. Nothing like going up there at the right times and seeing truck after truck passing by with feathers flying all around the ground and road (the birds are "taken care" of I suppose in a more humane way as the one guy in the retail store was telling people that the Jandl pays more to have them gassed which according to him is an ethically sound practice). In terms of price it all depends on the product. The Grand Champion brand (same type they send two of every year to the White House articles.mcall.com/2013-11-27/news/mc-white-house-turkey-jaindl-20131127_1_jaindl-farms-turkeys-david-jaindl) will set you back $2.79 per pound and you've got everything from Jerky to Turkey BBQ (not good) to Smoked Boneless Breasts (very good) to Brined Whole Turkey to Smoked Whole Turkey to Organic Free Range plus more. As a plus, the retail store now carries local favorite A-Treat soda as the Jandl family brought that brand back from the dead last year. Personally, nothing regarding the price matters to me as I get my turkey from here every year free from a family member who works for a large area institution who gives their entire staff free turkeys and since she doesn't eat no meat (quasi-Big Fat Greek Wedding reference) I happily scavenge the voucher and drive up to Orefield every year. The grand champion Jainl turkey from Wegmans was the worst turkey we've ever had. It was tough, full of tendons and will ultimately be thrown out. Don't be fooled by the romanticized story of a family farm and specially bred bird. It was just plain horrible. read more

We purchased a grand champion turkey for thanksgiving this year and it was an absolutely horrible turkey. With proper cooking even a cheap store bird is very juicy and succulent, the grand champion was anything but. This was the toughest and chewiest turkey I could have ever imagined eating in over 20 years of hosting a thanksgiving dinner. I most certainly will be choosing another brand bird for next year, even if it is an organic store brand one. read more

Like a previous reviewer, I too, purchased a Wegmans Organic Grand Champion Turkey for Thanksgiving. I know my way around the kitchen and have been making Thanksgiving turkeys for several decades. This bird was outrageously expensive, tasteless, and tough. I would not have minded the cost so much had the bird tasted like turkey, but it fell flat. Thank God I made extra gravy. This morning I threw out what was left. In all my life I have NEVER thrown out a turkey. I will not purchase this brand again. read more
