A delicious greasy roti filled with potatoes and veggies rolled up in a perfect snack for $1. Three would make a satisfying meal. The short eats are the reason to come here and save yourself a trip to Scarborough. They're not too spicy for someone who may be new to Sri Lankan food. As for the other items, there's a shop down the block which seems to have a better selection and better prices, but no short eats. This place also sells plain roti and it looks like they might sell other food as well even though this looks like it's just a small dry goods store. Back when USD and CAD were on par, I could spend US dollars here and get Canadian change back, which was a cheap way to change money.

Trupti seems to be that secret place that isn't reviewed much but has a stream of South Indian shoppers who make the pilgrimage to this place for their spices. Trupti has a factory in the back where fresh spices are roasted and packaged before they are either brought to the front and sold in store or sent off under private label. I was told by staff that restaurants make their own blends here just for themselves. The place is a family run business with their own blends as well. As you can see from all my photos, I picked up A LOT! I waited till I opened some of these before posting a review. What I noticed right away is that the spices smell really fresh. I compared it to some McCormack spices I just got from metro and Trupti wins by a long shot. The roasted spices smell amazing. There isn't much more to say other that for the quantity, the prices are great and the quality is impressive. Go here for spices. The end!

We went way back to Kensington Market in the 80s. Family run for years they have the freshest and best selection of spices around. If they don't have it on the shelf the odds are they have it in the back and will be more than happy to pack you up some. Since they supply many restaurants and pretty well a majority of the Indian markets. They also have a great selection of nuts and all kinds of flour. Very friendly staff, helpful, just good people. I asked a gentleman to help me find "Korean" red pepper for my kimchi. The lady at the hot table was very friendly and helpful as I wanted help selecting the grilled mackerel. I ordered grilled calamari, some dim sum, as well as grilled mackerel. Even though I showed up for a last-minute ingredient, I now have dinner! It was fresh. The su mai looks pretty standard to what I find at most grocery hot tables these days. The taste is just all right. :/ The har gow is nice. The chicken dumplings are a nice change from the ordinary options at Chinese lunch/dim sum places.

Jian Hing Supermarket is not merely a grocery store; it is a portal. Tucked into the fabric of…read moreNorth York, this sprawling Asian supermarket offers something that no amount of curated urban planning can manufacture: an authentic, exuberant abundance. The aisles are dense with possibility. Ripe Vietnamese mangoes perfume the produce section with a fragrance that is unmistakably of somewhere else, somewhere warmer, somewhere real. The selection is staggering, encompassing a breadth of Southeast and East Asian pantry staples, fresh vegetables, and specialty items that would make any serious home cook feel, at last, understood. And yet, the experience carries a weight beyond the culinary. Walking these aisles, one is reminded with quiet force that we are, geographically, in Canada. A country whose prosperity is inseparable from the very communities that animate places like this. The produce, the fish counters, the hand-scrawled price tags represent not just commerce but continuity. A diaspora feeding itself with dignity. One feels, genuinely, happy here. That happiness, however, is complicated. Canada presents itself to the world as a nation of warmth and tolerance, a reputation polished to a high shine on the international stage. But within the walls of a place like this, one becomes acutely aware of how selectively that warmth is distributed. The Asian communities that sustain Jian Hing, that built North York into what it is, do so while navigating a social climate where the so-called Canadian niceness has, in recent years, shown troubling cracks. The stereotype holds, until it does not. Five stars for the mangoes, the selection, and the joy of the aisles. A more complicated score for the country surrounding it.

Not all branches do food - for example the Mississauga branch doesn't. Got a sugar cane for only $3. It came with options to add lime and/or ginger, which I declined. It seemed to have a bit of a sour edge, so it probably had lemon added. It was good, though it wasn't cold. On the flip side, that meant it wasn't cut with ice either. It was a bit small, though it was described on the receipt as "12 oz. Now bigger qty" so I guess it used to be even smaller. The paan (stuffed betel nut leaf) was actually pretty good - moist & a good mix of flavours, with a maraschino cherry pinned onto its outside with a toothpick. Masala butter pav was pretty good though the bun was soft & not crispy. Small samosa (for which they undercharged me - 20 cents though the menu said it was 25 cents to get you to buy 5 for $1) was actually pretty big. It was ok; though pre-made it still had some crispness. Batataka vada was large but plain & neither crispy nor warm so it wasn't good. The "jumbo" vada pav came in a burger bun. The patty was not crispy because it was pre-made & cold but it still tasted OK. The chutneys were nice. The patty used potato that was a bit coarse but still tasted ok; compressed into the bun the chunkiness of the potato was not so noticeable. The spiciness of the dish hit in the aftertaste especially hard.
